Mazda Rev-It-Up - Laguna Seca - This weekend part 1

Mazda Rev-It-Up - Laguna Seca - This weekend
This is it.... the moment that I haven't prepared one bit for in my life. This little fish heads into the tank head first to swim with some of the best drivers this side of Canadia, and hopes to come out unscathed. Mental scarring will happen, that's just a part of the game, from what I hear.

The 2003 Mazda Rev-It-Up championship is this weekend at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway in California. Format: Auto-X.

I'm going against the other 14 city winners and the 5 top scorers. 20 of us in elimination auto-x on Sunday morning. 1st place wins a new Mazda 6.

Friday night is a meet & greet, with saturday being fun competition and seat time (and a clam bake and kayak racing in the afternoon), sunday is the actual competition with 20 drivers, then 10 drivers then 5 etc... until there's one lesft standing.

Here goes! See ya'll when I get back!
TheWRX 08-28-2003 05:42 PM

Good luck!
Dussander 08-28-2003 05:53 PM

Best of luck! You should fly out on a one way ticket and drive the 6 back. :D

Good luck KC!

See you in Topeka! (mental scars & all...:p)

Good luck KC, I'm rooting for the Subaru guy even though there's lots of Houston guys out there.
jbrennen 08-28-2003 07:57 PM

Good luck with that Mazda 6. If you win, don't let them try to give you one of those worn out cars from the competition -- make sure it's a shiny new one.

Good Luck Keith. Get the fast driving out of your system this weekend

ChrisDP 08-29-2003 12:30 AM

Give 'em hell, Keith. When you win, credit it to learning how to drive a wagon fast. :)

~Chris, who may not have a dog in the STX fight... but still drives a sedan. :)
STX_REX 08-29-2003 05:54 AM

Un-leash the hounds, give 'em hell and all that. If all goes well, you can put away that silly wagon and start drivin a real car:lol:
Storm 08-29-2003 08:19 AM

Make sure you stick a trunkmonkey racing decal on the car as you get in. Oh, and keep referring to the car as "your car".....!!!!:D

Good luck, man. You've won already by just getting to the final event!

Have fun KC! I want to get the full report at Topeka.

And when you win that thing, ask them if you can trade it for an RX8 when they present it to you.:D

From the evolution-discussion list:

Quick update as we are going kayaking in a few minutes. Today was practice
with 2 runs in 2 cars that are not going to be run, untimed. And then one
practice run in one of 4 cars that would be used in the Sunday competition.
Unofficial time had Mike King fastest, with Salerno, Braun, myself and Brollier
in
the lead. Daddio ran toward the end and the car was shifting into drive so
was off the pace. The afternoon had a competition with groups of 5 drivers and
a pro doing a relay on the course in RX-8's. Those results are not up, but
ask Gary Thomason (one of the Pro's) about the syncro's in 2nd gear, as well as
counting to 6 instead of 5...obviously more to that one. The final had all of
us taking 2 runs in one of 2 RX-8's, to try to beat the Pro, Jason Hart who
set the dial-in. Daddio beat the pro and will get to set the dial-in next year
at his home city, which I think he has 4 to choose from. :-) Matthew Braun
was second and I think might have tied the Pro, and I want to put special note,
that he did it in the sunroof car that I drove, which was not as good
handling as the non-sunroof car that we all ran in the relay. Let alone giving
Karter and I stiff necks from being cocked to the side the whole run. Anyway,
the
Mazda people are really doing a great job and everyone is having fun, and
tomorrow it gets serious. We all will be doing 2 runs in each of the 4 cars
with
elimination going from 20 - 10 -3 - 1. So the top three will get 24 runs.

And here are the final results. KC inished 7th - a VERY credible finish against some really tough competition. Way to go, KC!

And Daddio won (no big surprise there - the guy is amazing...)

Nice going, KC! I'm sure you wanted to win, but being placed right behind Strelnieks, Braun and Salerno isn't bad at all.

should have gone... [/B][/QUOTE]Seeing as not many cones were hit... you would have just been standing around.

Where to start? 1st off thanks to all who wished me well. I did indeed (as posted in the results) finish 7th. Competition was held on Sunday with Saturday being seat time and fun time.

Secondly... thank you Mazda for such a great weekend. The professionalism, timeliness and overall smooth flowing event made everyone walk away with nary a bad thing to say about the event (with the exception of "If we're all winners, how come we all didn't get a car? Hmmm???") Thank you.

Everyone arrived Friday afternoon with a meet and greet scheduled for 6:30 pm. My wife and I left the house here in MA at 4am eastern and arrived at Monterey at 1pm West coast (you do the math) and were able to spend some time walking around Monterey checking things out, like the otters and sea lions haging out by the shore. 6:30 rolled around and I got to meet everyone I've a) only heard about, b) talked to online or 3) only saw their names in the results. Very well done, and we got introduced to the people that made this event happen. (Bed by 9:30.... 12:30 eastern)

Saturday was breakfast and the ride to the track. Having only seen Laguna Seca on TV or Playstation, neither of them give it ANY justice to when you see it in person. We started off with a meeting about what's going to happen for the day and setting expectations. 1st off? A rolling 'tour' of Laguna Seca, 5 people at a time. We all hopped in the Mazda minivan to get shown the track. (They're prepping it for the upcoming ALMS race so we couldn't really push things.) GT is pretty close to the layout but the elevations are ALL wrong, especially the corkscrew and after that. An experience that you have to see for yourself.

Then was practice time on the course with cars number 5 and 6. 2 runs on the course each. Then one more run in one of the actual cars (we used cars 1, 2, 3, and 4 for the competition). Lunch was a seminar by Lyn St. James, Rookie Indy winner 1997 I beleive. And then the afternoon was some fun time in the pre-production RX-8s that went around on the tour with the Show. We all got 2 fun runs in the blue one... and WOW this car just loves to be flogged, tail out. :D

Rally relay was next in line, where we were teamed up with 4 others and a pro in the passenger seat (driving the RX-8). This was where you start out with one driver, they do the course, then come in, stop in the stop box on the course, jump out, tag hands with the next driver and then they do the course. The last run is by the pro driver hopping out of the passenger seat to the driver seat and doing the last run. This was a fun time and most time lost for teams was in the driver change. All runs were a cumulative time. Our team came in 4th out of 5.... too many cones! :D (But at least our pro driver didn't go off course by missing the last cone in the slalom... BILL!!) :p

Then it was back off to the hotel for about an hour and from there we went Kyacking in Monterey bay for 4 miles. From Cannerey row to the back of the Aquarium turn around and to the beach. Overall it was about 4 miles of water, and one of the guys almost got sunk by a sealion. We continued to the beach via kyack and it was time for the clambake, complete with Margaritas, with a beach band and followed up with volleyball. :D

Sunday was competition in the following format: 4 cars. Everyone has 2 runs in each car. Drivers 1-20 in car one and drivers 20-1 in car 2. They then switched cars and did their runs. So everyone got 2 runs in each car, and in different order. So it was about as fair as possible to everyone.

So as the results speak for themselves, 20 were reduced to 10. Then the sun came out. :D

There was a consolation run for the other 10 that didn't make it into the semifinals and then it was the same thing according to ranking/finishing order into the semi-finals. Everyone driving all 4 cars again 1-10 in car one and 10-1 in car 2, etc... until the top 3 went on to the finals, where they drove the 4 cars again!.

Daddio... the man, the legend, the alien won, followed by Superman Mike King (wears a lucky superman shirt) and GJ Dixon, who was dubbed 'boy wonder' rounded out the top three. What an excellent time just watching the battle take place for the championship between all the competitiors.

These were the same cars that were on the tour, as beat on and in the same conditions. :) Each car was the same, but had their own little quirks, like one had better accelleration, one felt a little more stiff than the others, etc...

We all got interviewed by the media teams they had there and some of the weekend may show up on the web site.

Overall? The expereince is one that I'll remember for a LONG time and well.. it was the best $39 I ever spent. :D

Also, there were other prizes:
The fastest Rally Relay team won Cast Iron 'Sparco Seat' Cell phone holders.
All semi-finalists won an X-Box with 2 games (handed out there on the spot)
Top 3 won a certificate for a set of Falkens
And Daddio... well he'll call Mazda, detail his options, and the sky's the limit. He said he's going to keep the car and use it as his daily driver.

The comraderie and professionalism by all the competitiors and organizers was definietely the highlight. Egos were checked at the door (or at the luggage check in and shipped to another city) because it was just a fantastic time and everyone getting along.

One more thing that was quite funny... everyone saying goodbyes, was more of everyone saying "see ya next week in Topeka." About 80% of the drivers are also competing in Nationals. :D

And that's a topic for next week.... :D
