Try this:

Worked for me. I only heated to about 200 degrees, sanded with fine paper, and primed with black engine primer before the paint. Good luck.

the way we did it was 15 minutes at 225.....dont forget the small bolt on the side of the housing.....and then pried apart, then used bbq paint <for grills, hightemp> paint ....look great....and yes i have done quite a few for the rexes...
Imbaru25rs 10-15-2002 01:52 PM

thanks, ill be sure to post how it went :D
hpracingwrx 10-15-2002 03:16 PM

i just used regualr primerand semi gloss krylon paint and havent had any problems yet, dont forget to reseal them with some black silicone or something or else itll look bad with all that condensation
RSarte 10-16-2002 04:14 PM

I used a heat gun all around the sides of the headlights and pryed it apart when the adhesive became soft. I painted the areas (it's removable from the main part of the light) with high temp black paint and it's good to go. No problems with condensation or anything.

thanks guys, all worked well ill post some pics as soon as i get them, and i got another question...lol

ok my stock tail lights have orange in them, the WRX has the orange part clear, now i know you can buy them but i heard somthing about being able to remove the orange on them instead of paying a few hundred for the new ones, does anyone know how to do this?

thanks,

chris
Elite421 10-17-2002 05:22 PM

I'm not sure about being able to remove the orange. But some people have put tint over the orange, and also used a type of spray tint. I have only seen this with red and Black though.

BIG question on painted headlights.......

OK, so I'm really wanting to do this mod. I like what the guy on clubwrx did with that PVC pipe for the turn signal (anyone know if he painted the pipe itself, outside OR inside?). Anyways, I have a blue WRX wagon and I'm going with a total blue thing outside. What do y'all think of doing this mod with BLUE paint?!?!?
Elite421 10-30-2002 11:12 PM

With blue paint.... Should look good! post some pics when your done. Dont know about the PVC pipe thing.

I got a response from koji, the guy who worked it up on clubwrx. For those who haven't read it, he replaced the orange bulb cover with a PVC pipe section. He painted the outside of the pipe the same color as the rest of the assembly. I think I'm going to paint the inside of it silver - it will help the visibility of the turn signal but you shouldn't really be able to see the silver when the blinker's not on.

OK, so I got one vote that blue would look good - any more?!? I'm also thinking that I'll do a shade of blue a little darker than the WR Blue, somewhere between navy and WR blue. I want you to be able to see a difference from the headlights to the body but I definitely want the colors to play off each other.

Before I undertake this, more votes, more votes! I respect i-clubbers opinions about dress-up (read: make your car look cool, not ricey!)
sonicblue 10-31-2002 08:15 PM

bump for votes!
thetikler1 10-31-2002 08:28 PM

it''ll look good in blue.....

but i have a Q what do i do with this piece of pvc pipe? can't i just paint the side of the orange thing black also?
sonicblue 10-31-2002 09:18 PM

Yes, I think painting the orange thing is one of the ways to go. My expectation of what the PVC pipe will do, is give it more of a 'projector' look.

Thanks for the vote for the blue. Now I just have to see if I can find a paint in the right shade. Do y'all think this definitely requires 'high-temp' stuff? You're not painting the area directly around the headlight bulb, so I'm wondering how hot the painted area will really get. I expect fewer color choices in high-temp paints.
Elite421 11-01-2002 01:33 AM

I would go with the high temp stuff just to be safe. The last thing your going to need is to buy new headlights.

DJ626 11-01-2002 05:13 AM

ok ive been wanting to do this mod for a long time, are you guys painting the clear outer or the actual silver in the inside....
sonicblue 11-01-2002 08:22 AM

You're just painting the outer areas, not the shell that's actually around the bulb. Follow the link to the clubwrx thread above - one of the pictures in it is a pretty good shot of the finished product.
sonicblue 11-01-2002 01:29 PM

here's the plan.......

What do you think of this approach? I have two enamel paints, one flat black, one flat royal blue. When I paint, I'm going to alternate coats - black first (to cover the silver best) and blue last. What I'm hoping to achieve is basically a very dark look but when the light hits it jusssst right.......a little blue hits ya'. Interested to hear if y'all think this will work as I hope.

I am so psyched to do this - Lowe's didn't have the PVC connector so I gotta hit the Depot on the way home.....
Elite421 11-01-2002 04:33 PM

Sounds good to! just dont froget the pics whjen your done.

HELP!! Cracked?!?!?!?!

Started this today - everything appeared to be going smooth as silk. After I got the first clear cover off, I noticed a nice straight line going across the cover. F***!! You can't feel anything across the outside but running your hand across it on the inside, it feels just like a crack. I figured I did it while prying the pieces apart. But, the other one was already in the oven and when I took it out, I noticed it already had what looked like the EXACT same line across the lens, and I hadn't even tried to pry yet.

Question is:

1) Is it possible that this cracked just from the oven heat? I only put it in at 200 for about 10-15 minutes or so.

2) If not, is it possible (and I'm HOPING it is) that the lens had this is in from the beginning, that the lens is just two pieces?

3) AM I SCREWED?
ATX25RS 11-03-2002 05:05 PM

if is a perfect straight line traversing the cover, that is normal...as in it was already there...:D
sonicblue 11-04-2002 08:47 AM

Awwwwww, yeahhhhh!

KOJI ROCKS!!

Koji's mod isn't terribly different from everyone else's (open headlights, remove orange thing, paint, close) but the PVC pipe addition is a landmark idea. A phenomenal projector look for $0.79!

Sorry I don't have pics just yet but they will come soon. Just wanted to post quickly for anyone else wanting to do this - GET YOUR MATERIALS 'CAUSE YOU'LL LUV IT!

Two warnings:
1) If you e-mail him for instructions, he'll give you a SKU# for the pipe at Home Depot. Your store may not have that number, they change by region. Instead of the number, just look for a 1 1/2" dia x 1 1/4" length PVC bushing. FWIW, I wouldn't bother e-mailing him for instructions - they're no different than I've seen posted here and elsewhere. The only thing it really adds is the specifics on the PVC pipe (which I just gave you) and he notes that you can either epoxy the pipe right in, or cut the little nubs off the stock orange housing and epoxy them to the pipe to hold it in. I just epoxyed it right to the housing.

2) There is already a line across the lens that looks like a crack - don't have a seizure like I did when you see it.

Also, to answer a question I posted above, BLUE ROCKS! Actually, what I did was alternate coats of black and royal blue, with the last full coat being black, but then I "misted" a little blue right at the end. The result was a very dark "midnight" blue that just flat out rules. Pics coming later tonight......promise.
sonicblue 11-04-2002 01:24 PM

sorry, dj626....

Just realized I told you that you were painted the outer area - as your question worded it, I should have said no. You are not painting the clear outer lens, you are painting the silver reflective area.

So, I pull into work today and I always park it right outside a friend's office so he can look out and see my latest work. Did it today with the headlights, came upstairs and realized that the glare off the clear lens prevents you from clearly seeing my great paint job. Is there a glare-reducing/eliminating coating you can put on headlights?

Pics tonight - promise!

you can right click on the pic, copy the properties....then paste them into the image box...they use the same vb format so they work fine..

Everyone seems to be painting their headlights either black or WRB. Has anyone done another color? I have an Aspen White Impreza and was considering white. What do u guys think?
sonicblue 11-13-2002 03:57 PM

I think most people do really dark colors because it provides a contrast to the lights. Yes, I realize the stock silver reflective isn't a contrast but it's......wel......reflective, so it's not much of a concern.

I think white would be sweet, but visibility of the parking light around dusk makes me say "hmmmmmmm....." People put white eyelids on their headlights, so the top part of the light being white would look similar. The parking light area isn't that big, so no real risk in "overwhelming" the look with white because of that. Otherwise, it's just the thin outline of the frame that would be white, and that would be set against your body color, so I think that would be good.

Here's my final call: if you haven't done it yet, go to scoobymods and find the mod to wire your side markers up to your parking lights/blinkers. Then paint those headlights white, young man! I think it would rock! Good luck and be sure to post the resulting pics!
