Round 6 - US Touring Car Championship at Sears Point

Hey everyone,

This weekend is our big hometrack race. It's the 6th round of the US Touring Car Championship. We are currently 3rd in the championship, and we are starving for our first win. It should have happened at California Speedway a few weeks ago, but a rogue Honda but an end to our very strong chances.

There will be a practice and two qualifying sessions on Saturday, Nov 10th and a morning practice and 50 minute afternoon race on Sunday.

So, if you are in the area and want a fun day at the races, come on by and hang out with us. Just look for the Subaru trailer.

See you there,

Gary

p.s. - I hear there's a chance of rain on Sunday!

what's the status of the car now?

Get all teh body work done? Was there anything broken on the inside that u didn't anticipate?

Is series ever on television?

The way you dominated Sears in the wet with the delSol, I predict good things with the Suby. Hope they don't make you run dry tires to give the field a chance of not getting lapped. If it rains, I will definitely be there to observe the carnage. With all those new walls, it should be entertaining for us spectators.

Kick some butt! But stay safe......
GarySheehan 11-07-2001 06:48 PM

bgsntth,

You're talking old school! That race was over a year and a half ago. How did you hear about that?

I've got my fingers crossed for rain. All wheel drive or not, I think I'd rather race in the rain!

When is it this weekend and what does it cost and where can i buy tickets?

I live VERY near Sears Point, this sounds like fun.
HomerJay 11-07-2001 11:36 PM

Ditto. Can you post more info. I live 30 minutes from there and I'll come support you and I'd love to check out your car. You might want to post this in the Bay Area section also.

EDIT: I saw on your website that it is this Sat. & Sun. but it doesn't say anything about price.
philioWRXman 11-08-2001 12:03 AM

I just looked at Sears Points schedule, and the event isn't listed.

Whats going on?

I even searched on their search engine and they have no info at all on the USTCC.

I'd love to go, but if its not happening...:(

Someone fill me in please.

Email it along with posting it - [email protected]

Thanks
i-rex 11-08-2001 12:40 AM

Yeah, the schedule wasn't posted. When are the practice/qualifying on Saturday?

I'd like to check it out with the family. Back a some years ago I used to bring the wife & kids to Sears Point on practice days when you could drive in, sign a waiver an watch for free. Do they still do this?

Stephen
HomerJay 11-08-2001 01:54 AM

Hey I-Rex,

Go to the Bay Area Section, there is another thread about it. Also someone posted something about it being $5/person. Not much more info than that. See you there! :D

I wish I can go! But the drive from San Jose is just a bit too far... I hope someone will take some nice rain pictures from the race :)
In2Deep 11-08-2001 03:07 AM

Gary, do you guys have video's available? I'd like to see how the car does, but it isn't always convenient to get out to the racetrack :(
Scoobyslack1 11-08-2001 10:34 AM

good luck Gary
lets see you on top of that podium this time.....if those Hondas can stay out of your way
GarySheehan 11-08-2001 12:17 PM

Hey everyone,

The reason you can't find all the info you are looking for is because this is a relatively new racing series that hasn't yet grown to the size required to get the TV time or top billing at race tracks.

Here's the schedule for this weekend:

SEARS POINT USTCC

Saturday:
Practice: 8:00-8:20AM
Qualifying: 10:00-10:20AM
Qualifying: 4:00-4:20PM

Sunday:
Practice: 9:45-10:05AM
RACE: 12:50-1:40PM

Remember to bring your rain gear!!!

If you come out on Saturday, you'll also be treated to the Legends cars National Runoffs. SSF BMW and Porsche Challenge will be both Saturday and Sunday. The Legends will be gone Sunday and NASA is hosting an HPDE event.

So on Sunday you'll be able to see the USTCC, SSF BMW and Porsche Challenge and a NASA HPDE Event.

if i make it there, ill take some pics, but i dont have a digi camara, so itll be awhile before i get an up if i take any good ones.:)

Gary, will you be offering any videos?

Good Luck!

Gary, do you know anything about cost?

USTCC needs to be at least on Speedvision, i know when i did have it for free back in the day that they played reruns a lot of older races, so maybe they would have space even now for a USTCC race, even if it had to be played on TV days after the event.

Cant wait for this weekend. Should be fun!:D

DIE HONDAS

I hope it rains, cuz rain races are more interesting. The weatherman on the local station said he wasnt sure it would rain hard or not, but he was sure we would get some "moisture", as he said. So itll be a little bit wet, but thats fine with me!
GarySheehan 11-08-2001 02:30 PM

No, unfortunately the races aren't televised yet. The USTCC is working on that for next year.

The entry fees should only be between $5-$10.

We haven't purchased a video camera as we've been putting all of our funds into developing the car. If someone has a video camera and a rollbar mount that they would be willing to lend us, we would definitely video the race.

All the indications I've seen so far are pointing to rain over the weekend. Keep your fingers crossed!

IMPORTANT - Team SMR Needs Your Help!!!

Team SMR has done a wonderful job of promoting the series on this web site and it's time for it to pay off. As Gary mentioned, he is in a points battle for the season end championship. Part of the points gained during the season come from "Promotion Points".

What can you do to help????

For every I-List member who comes to me to check in, I will award Team SMR one (1) promotion point that applies to their season end points.

All I need is your name and your login name for me to verify. Feel free to track me down Saturday or Sunday. I should be fairly easy to locate.

Pole Position!

Hey everyone,

We finally grabbed our first pole position. In the first qualifying session we managed to outqualify James Sofranes in his BMW 328 by .012 seconds! Now that's close!

Our second qualifying session was rained on, so everyones times dropped significantly. We had the fastest rail lap by 5 seconds. Curiously missing was Sofranes' BMW. He may be hiding a special rain tire he doesn't want us to know about...

Anyway, we start from P1 tomorrow. Thanks to all the folks that came out to the track today and we're looking forward to seeing some new faces tomorrow.

Fantastic Job!

The Pole!

Great Job, Gary. I'm SO bummed I could not be up there this weekend to see it. Drive the car like you did in Fontana, and the win will be YOURS. I cant wait to hear all about it!

Hey, to anyone who is/was/will be there to watch today: News after the race would be greatly appreciated this evening......chances are Gary will be out celebrating, so he may not be able to post news himself.

Good luck today, Gary.
philioWRXman 11-11-2001 12:17 PM

Is anyone sure on the cost today? I need to know ASAP.

If i dont make it there today, I wnat to see some pictures up on here by monday people!

Not to mention the impressive show of Subaru support from the fans and lots of Subies in the paddock!
GarySheehan 11-13-2001 03:13 PM

Hey everyone!

Thanks for the kind words. We finally did it!!! Thanks to everyone that showed up to support us. What a great feeling it was to be surrounded by people that really wanted us to win and were there to celebrate with us afterwards!

I'm working on the weekend recap. I should have it done shortly. There's a lot to cover since I didn't get the chance to write about the California Speedway debacle.

I'll let everyone know when it's up.

If you're REALLY bored, you can read this old story from last year's Laguna Seca race when we were driving the Honda del Sol in the USTCC. You can find it here.
