DRIVEN part 1

GQ 04-11-2001 09:12 AM

DRIVEN

This might be a little out of place as far as forums go but it is about racing... Any comment on the new movie coming out "DRIVEN". It looks good, but might be cheezy. I already noticed that F-1 engine noise is dubbed in the previews. I am a big F-1, and Champ Car fan. I hope that the movie does these forms of racing justice, and increases the fan base for these forms of racing. Also the cars that are being used have Honda CBR 900 RR motorcycle engines in them.
Opie 04-11-2001 09:20 AM

Well I know it's based on CART, not F1. Something about the FIA not allowing the movie maker the rights.
Subie Gal 04-11-2001 09:21 AM

well i am off to the local sneak preview next week.. should be interesting... i'll let ya know after i see it [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

that would be AWESOME

RidinLow 04-11-2001 10:45 AM

Yep, it looks like an updated version of Days of Thunder. I was laughing at the preview... it was all huge crashes punctuated by shots of beautiful women & a ridiculous car chase... with the champ cars racing on public streets!!!
Bonzo 04-11-2001 10:51 AM

I agree with the others. I remake of The Days of Blunder, only with open wheel and maybe nicer babes[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif[/img] I will most likely see it just in case...
Strepto 04-11-2001 11:14 AM

can't be any worse than what The Fast and the Furious is going to be. At least we get to see Champ Cars instead of beaterz
ColinL 04-11-2001 11:31 AM

Nicer babes than Days of Thunder? There are nicer babes than Nicole Kiddman? [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif[/img]
Bonzo 04-11-2001 04:57 PM

well... you have a point ColinL. I knew N Kidman was in blunder but she was the only one, I'm always hoping for mooooore[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]

all i have to say is if i had a champ car you better believe that puppy would be driven on the street every now and then..heck even motorla wouldn't fair THAT big of a chance [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif[/img] [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif[/img] [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]

auricom 04-11-2001 08:41 PM

i think the movie should be cool, even though "Hey Yo's" in it. the thing that sort of make me wonder is in the preview, they show a Player's/Forsythe car crashing into the sand, sort of like Greg Moore's crash. thats kind of sick of them.

Hello,

Umm, y'all realize that Stallone is not only in the movie, HE WROTE THE MOVIE.

I think that about sums up how great the movie will be.

However, given my ULTRA LOW expectiations, I suppose it can't be worse than expected. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

Joel
Tobias_Ostapchuk 04-11-2001 10:58 PM

FYI...the Players car "Crash" shown is Patrick Carpantier at Laguna Seca last year.

Greg Moore died at California Speedway, As tragic as that incident was, I seriously doubt that CART.....a publicly held corporation....would try to emulate ANYTHING even remotely resembling something as tragic as the death of a racing hero.

Also, Player's Forsythe Racing still fields "Players" sponsored cars for Patrick Carpantier and Alexandre Tagliani. Other "Players" drivers have included Jacques Villeneuve, Greg Moore, Memo Gidley and Bryan Herta.

Please don't jump to conclusions.
stiggy-pug 04-12-2001 12:20 AM

My preconception is you will be "Driven" to tears...cheez factor very high,however-if somebody in Hollywood made a rally movie i'd go see it no matter how cheezy...something like "Co-Driven"....or "The Scandinavian Flick"...or "A Yump Too Far" maybe "Pacenotes From the Underground" or "Dude,Wheres my Extreme Rallycar?"...hehehehe
J Colman 04-12-2001 05:38 AM

This will be the biggest joke movie of all time. Anyone who knows anything about open wheel race cars will leave that theater a broken man. Come on, Champ cars on the streets blowing womens skirts up, cars crashing head on and launching each other into the air. I guarantee the ending will go something like this. Guy has a problem, has to pit for about 2 mins, come's back onto track 2 laps down and somehow manages to unlap himself twice to come from behind to win it all. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif[/img]

This is going to be funny.

Rent LeMans and Grand Prix.
If you can find them, Italian Job and Gumball Rally.

And for your hankering for cheese...
Cannonball Run.
(Burt Reynolds is in both Cannonball and Driven!)

Edit: Smokey and the Bandit, the first one. The rest were total crap. (Insert jokes here)

Champ cars do race on city streets...ever hear of Long Beach?

Surfer's Paradise?
Toronto?
Vancouver?

they're all street course races...

auricom 04-12-2001 06:57 AM

hey Tobias_Ostapchuk hold up, i was just stating that it looked kind of odd. the fact they would put a crash with a Player's/Forsythe car is what got me. its like if in one year a nascar movie came out with a crash similar that had the same car as Earnhardt and same incident. and if you notice i said "sort of like Greg Moore's crash" not it was his crash. sorry o god's of CART.
J Colman 04-12-2001 07:58 AM

Steve D. I am not saying they dont, but how often have you seen one of them blowing up some bimbo's skirt (ala Marylin Monroe) and racing Ford Tempo's and such.

Justin
GQ 04-12-2001 08:18 AM

I like the "skirt blowing up scene". I'm sure the movie will be very cheezy for those of us that follow Champ Car Racing, but I will go give it a chance anyway. It should be somewhat interesting, Stallone is a big Champ Car, and F-1 fan.
Sardonic 04-12-2001 08:39 AM

Hey Joel, Stallone wrote Rocky. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img] [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif[/img]
OnTheGas 04-12-2001 09:29 PM

Saw some trailers in a booth that Driven had rented out at the Long Beach GP...

Now we know why Stallone was booted from the F1 paddocks. Because someone in F1 has a little bit of good taste. This will make Days of Thunder look like an oscar winning documentary...

If any you folks really wanna see it, then I recommend you try the first week. Death for this movie will be quick and merciful.
Adrian128 04-13-2001 08:20 AM

Colin.. you know there are nicer babes than Nicole Kidman.. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img] There are so many of them here in Sydney it's not funny.. Even in Nic's old high school there are better babes. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img] Remember BMX Bandits.. you wouldn't think Nicole is a babe if you saw her then... by the way as someone mentioned, stallone wrote rocky, so he *can* write something good...
garface 04-15-2001 11:04 AM

I hope they don't hit a bump driving those cars with those suspensions on anything but glass smooth city streets. Bumpity, bumpity, spin, crash, 200mph, boom, dead, the end.
Porter 04-15-2001 11:15 AM

Rocky was good? [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif[/img]
Fred Zaplitny 04-15-2001 11:43 AM

All I can say is that this movie will no doubt insult the intellegence of true CART fans in much the same way Days Of Thunder insulted us NASCAR fans (I was a big NASCAR fan at the time). But just as "Days" brought a whole new audience to NASCAR and helped make NASCAR one of the most popular spectator sports in this country, maybe this movie will help CART gain a bigger audience. Of course that means the new idiot fans of CART will then be insulting my intellegence! That and I'll have a harder time getting tickets to races. Now that I think about it, I hope this movie bombs bigtime!
Reiflex 04-16-2001 03:16 PM

I'm with you guys, that the movie will be un realistic, cheeze and all that.

But, I am glad that it is about formula car racing. And will bring much needed attention about this type of racing to the US and that there is more to racing that "go fast turn left & repeat" and getting on the front Wheaties box.
RS2001 04-17-2001 09:33 AM

Jeez guys, the movie doesn't look that bad. Besides, it's a summer movie, not a documentary, so of course it's not going to be a completely true representation of CART/F1. Because if it was, then CART/F1 fans would be the only ones that go see it, and that's not going to make money because you can watch that on Speedvision. Hot women, crashes, and race cars on the street get people in the theaters. I'm not saying it's going to be the greatest movie ever, but it looks entertaining to me and I'm a huge CART fan. Hey, what else are you going to go see.........Freddie Got Fingered?!.
P.S. Does anyone know the name of that street racing movie that's coming out, that should be pretty funny. I think Vin Diesel is in it. I thought it was supposed to come out around the same time as Driven. I'll stop ranting on now.
OnTheGas 04-17-2001 11:30 AM

RS2001 - You're probably right, it won't be as bad as we're all moaning on about. But a good F1 race or CART race has better and more instense drama in it than another mediocre movie which features bimbettes, too much crash footage, and silly scenes like folks racing CART cars in city traffic.

Two of my favorite racing movies, Le Mans, and Grand Prix captured the drama and intensity of racing that all of us here know and love, and they did it well. Since it has been close to 30 years since the last of those movies was shot, and I had heard Stallone was doing a racing movie, I was hoping he would be true to and try re-create the behind the scenes drama at the top of the racing world. I guess I'll keep waiting for someone to shoot another movie like Le Mans, and Grand Prix. And you're right, I'll stop pi$$ing about this movie, and just be quietly disappointed instead...
[edit typos... Bad fingers! Bad, bad!]

OK what movie in Hollywood is ever realistic?!?!?! From an action standpoint, the movie looks alright. I think you guys are getting way too nit-picky. I'm just glad someone is doing a movie about open-wheel racing in the US. CART could use the exposure.

I'll just do my best to educate those new to the fold.

I've got a lot of personnel ties in CART and I would love to see them make more money.

BTW, who went to Long Beach. I LOVE that race!!

OnTheGas-yes,LeMans was a truly great film,a project Steve Mcqueen fought for when nobody wanted to do it & his passion & enthusiasm is bleeding thru the silver flickering screen...what about the ItalianJob?-not a racing flick, but still a good movie(especially if ya like cooper mini's!)---American cinema is a cesspool of corporate interest & kiddy mentality,i'd much rather go to the arthouse & read subtitles & actually FEEL something...film is capable of being high art but the big budget blockbuster has ruined the craft alltogether...no really,i'm not an elitist anarchy guerilla![img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img][img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img][img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]
