Fisticuffs at the Grand Am race. part 1

Rally_wgn 03-05-2006 09:22 PM

Fisticuffs at the Grand Am race.
Great Grand Am race this weekend but two drivers got into it pretty seriously. I would expect this at my local dirt track and even the occasional NASCRAP race, but come on fellas its real road racing.

Anyway looking forward to seeing some of the Subaru operating teams at at least a few of these televised events.
DILLIGAF Racing 03-05-2006 10:02 PM

Psst, it happened in the Rolex race....which is run by NASCAR. Anyways, it was funny. Kinda like a hockey fight.
Rally_wgn 03-05-2006 10:18 PM

Doh! thats right. I taped them both and then watched. That hot mexican sun got to them i guess. It was a good fight, saw a couple of kicks thrown. It sort of looked like UFC for Bobbleheads
nKoan 03-05-2006 11:20 PM

After seeing that crash, I was thinking it needed a fight to really cap the moment.

But yeah, the Mexico race was pretty good. I liked it, despite (or maybe because of) that fight.
XenoWolf 03-06-2006 08:03 AM

Anyone got a vid of it?
wvallwheeldrive 03-06-2006 10:51 AM

All the Polex is is nascar in sports car form espsually(sp) the prototypes

Pssst part 2: One of the combattants was JC France, who aside from having had at least one previous physical encounter with a driver, is the son of Bill France Jr.
javid 03-06-2006 11:38 AM

I saw the fight on a news cap; didn't see teh crash that excited the event....

I could've swore I saw open cockpit cars there so I figured it was an ALMS race... but it was actually Rolex / Daytona Prototype cars?
parker/slc/gc8fan 03-06-2006 12:27 PM

IT has potential, if it werent so related to Nascar we might like it.

ALMS and Grand AM are still better,

What kind of drivers punch eachother in the helmet?!?!?
Rally_wgn 03-06-2006 12:31 PM

Rolex is trying to pick up some of the Hockey fan demographic

I didn't know it was run by NASCAR.
From watching last season there is some REALLY poor drving in that series. Rubbing is okay, ramming, in my book, is not. That fight didn't surprise me.
Rally_wgn 03-06-2006 01:33 PM

^^^Full agreement there the Porsche team spearing the GTO-R in the last lap was amazingly obvious. that kind of tactics continued in Mexico with Max "the Ax" pounding an opponent on the front straight. Supposedly they are cracking down on this activity but I havent seen any real impact yet.

I dont know that you can call it "poor" driving as this stuff goes on in many sports car racing series. On the other hand some series seem to keep it to a minimum.
artkevin 03-06-2006 02:46 PM

I think the "poor" comes from over agressive actions that too dangerous in my mind. All series have guys that are too agressive and that need to be punished but Rolex seems to have more then their fair share. In the BTCC and DTM and the like you see rubbing which is fine but to get into someones fender and try to pull a PIT move out of anger doesn't make the grade IMHO.

Not directed at you, parker, specifically...but

Just to clear up a little confusion in these series:

Grand American Road Racing (Grand AM ) IS the governing and sanctioning body of the aforementioned fight club drivers, JC France & Chris Bingham. It is a separate subsidiary of NASCAR with separate board of directors and trustees, etc, etc.

Grand AM is comprised of 2 series. The "Grand-AM Cup Series" and the "Rolex Series"

The Grand-Am Cup series includes 2 classes on track at once: GS & ST
The Rolex series includes 2 classes on track at once: DP (daytona prototype) & GT.

ALMS (Don Panoz creation) is of course also a sportscar road race series. It includes 4 classes on track at once: P1,P2, GTS and GT.

The 2 different bodies ( GrandAM and ALMS ) are not really comparable at all with exception of multi-class format and some shared venues with long and short endurance races.

ALMS follows FIA/ACO classing guidelines.
The only cars remotely similar in performance are the ALMS GT class to the Rolex GT class. However, the ALMS GT rules allow a more robust/expensive derivation of most cars, for example the 911 GT3RSR. The Rolex GT Porsche is basically a Porsche 911 Cup car. Head to head, the 911GT3RSR is substantially faster.

Hey Chris, yeah man I wanna see you do a spinning round house with a helmet on. Good thing those guys use closed face helmets. If that were a rally type event with open faced helmets someone might have had more than their ego hurt.
Bonzo 03-06-2006 03:58 PM

I laughed at the 'rastlin' match.

ALMS > GrandAm
parker/slc/gc8fan 03-06-2006 04:03 PM

Thanks Bri-drive, with all of the changes in local motorsports lately, it's easy to forget who's organizing who.

I'd love to be a corner worker there, you can be a part-time bookie. (done with jokes for the day)
Jack 03-06-2006 04:45 PM

Good fight. If it were me, I'd be yelling "that all you got" and just letting the other guy punch the crap out of my full face helmet.

The NASCAR race was fun. Nice to see former BMW racer, Boris Said doing well. I think they ran 6 laps green and the rest yellow. The race really showed how silly the NASCAR full course yellow/run 3 laps together/restart really is. Come on.....do a local yellow (they used blue) and keep things going.

I have no cable so have to rely on NASCAR.

very true
AUTOwrXER 03-06-2006 05:12 PM

That was hillarious. Those guys need to stick to driving and leave the brawling to the pit crews. Talk about banging your head against a brick wall. You'd think that it would sink in after the first punch to the helmet made impact that you had the wrong approach. Now had one of those guys targeted the liver and kidneys, they might be getting somewhere...

Psst part 3: Boris Said is still racing at least one BMW this year.

I don't know how much BTCC you've watched, but things got pretty ugly this year. I was upset by some of the obvious take-outs and retaliation.

I saw the clip of the fight on ESPN.

I

Bingham forwarded me this link--most drivers only want to send out press info that shows them in a positive light. The fact that he's sending out news links about him getting in a punch up is kinda funny, actually. :)

You're right. The BTCC was worse this year then in the recent past. I think one of themajor differnces is that the speeds are lower so the risk of injury, although still there seems to be less. Mexico City's track was already fast and even faster this year. No excuse for ethier series though.

It was a shame to see , and esp on TV. Imagine it from the stand point of SPONSORS. So you spend years trying to get a "one off" and then not only does someone take you out, but some son a ______ch is trying to take your head off. Of course you will defend yourself, now the people who helped you get together 20,30,40,50k or what ever are watching you on TV act like as azz. Any way you look at it, its bad. Its just not good for sports car racing in the USA.

I agree ^. NASCAR has fostered the same sort of WWF atmosphere that you see at many dirt tracks. I've always thought of sports car racing as being basically above that sort of thing.

After being very anti-Grand Am, I've warmed up to the series... just because the racing tends to be good. But they need to keep this sort of behavior under tight control, IMO.
horf 03-07-2006 10:54 PM

If NASCAR ran more road courses I would watch more. They would have to cut the number of cars on track to 20-25. They would have to get better drivers. Some guys are good, but some really suck.

Yeah, the first punches were aimed straight at the helmet. Not very bright, I'd say  At least one guy figured out that kicking was more effective later on.

The funniest part is that it's not two up and coming drivers that are battling and punching each other, it's two mega-millionaires that, after the smackdown concluded, flew home on their private jets. To heck with "Bum Fights," let's see a new series of "Trust Fund Fights" on DVD.
