In-Car Video from Round 6 of USTCC
Here is a video of the opening laps of our crazy race at Las Vegas this past weekend. It was a streetfight on the track.
This first file is an MPEG and it's huge (37M), but the quality is very nice. I'd suggest you right click and download instead of attempting to stream it.
http://www.teamsmr.com/movies/Las_Vegas.mpg
This file is the same clip, but is a Windows Media movie and is much smaller (7M) for bandwidth conservationists.
http://www.teamsmr.com/movies/Las_Vegas.wmv
Thanks to all the advice of from other members of the Motorsports Forum regarding putting a movie up. Also, a special thanks to ZZYZX for assisting us with Sonic Foundry Video Factory capture and editing software, which was used to make these movies.
Hope you like it...

dude! is it just me or the BMW driver was rough? Especially where he drifted a little and you took the inside. Seems like he just "smashed" you or something! nice vid!
oh the side note, wish i have the time and money to do what you do! :(

Yeah, you could say it was a bit rough. I was on the apex on the inside and couldn't go any further to the right. He tried to close the door, but I was half-way through, so he hit me. Banged up the fender and front door panel.
I got him back a few laps later when I outbraked myself and tapped his rear bumper a few times.
Neither incident was deliberate and neither incident effected the outcome. That's racing...
I wish I had the money to do what we do. Thankfully, our sponsors allow us to do what we love. Speaking of them, here they are...

Gary, that's great stuff! What is the word on how the race directors intend to handle those, ummm...'interesting' BMW's before the next time out? Joel's comments are professional of course, but there sure seemed to be some funny stuff going on, and right under everyone's noses, no less.
The videos look great. Please keep them coming and good luck next time out!

 Please, more! Have you considered the logistics of burning some DVDs and selling them? I gather there may be some business issues, other than technical ones.

So Gary, if you ever need a subaru driver to gang up on those guys with you, you just let me know. All I need is a car... And somebody to qualify for me...
great video! I wish this series was on TV. Though a big rally fan, I think TC racing is awesome too. I hope to at least try both on a club level someday.
Keep up the good work Gary!

Looks awesome, Gary! Glad to see Video Factory working out for you, let me know if you need any help.
That footage is quite an eye opener for me. He was definately being aggressive and I'm suprised he managed to stay in front based on the bad line he took, but that said, your understeer didn't help.

Steve,
Eye opener how? As in how close the action is or how aggressive some of the driving can be?

Well, both, actually. His driving style looked desperate. Is this what you usually face with him?
I guess it's an eye opener from the perspective of somebody like me that wants to compete in USTCC. I'll have to change my perspective in terms of what I'd be willing to put on the line to hang with the front runners.
I've been near the bumpers of some 911s on the track that had some serious tail-out attitude, but I don't know if I'd want to be that close. I guess you'd just have to have some faith that the driver in front of you knows what he's doing.

Yeah, that BMW's lines were horrendous. It looked like he was scanning his mirrors more than the track. On the bright side, Gary, you seem to be a very disciplined and professional driver. If you'd had just a bit more front grip he wouldn't have stood a chance.

I thought the Bimmer looked scared too. It was like the chase scenes in horror movies where the victim is running out of control while looking over their shoulder every 2 seconds. Meanwhile, the stalker is calmly following, in control.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what kind of diffs do you have/are allowed to have in the car?

What a jerk. I could tell the BMW spent more time looking in the mirrors than driving the car. Very unsportmanship and unprofessional. Reminds me of some of those police chase videos you see on Fox... :)

As requested, the entire race is now up on the website, unedited with all of my mistakes. You will notice that as the race goes on, the tires continue to degrade, up to the point where they caught me out and off the track I went.
A half hour race doesn't seem long on paper, but sitting there watching the in-car video, it seems longer than that.
Enjoy. And no jokes please :)
www.teamSMR.com/movies/Las_Vegas_Full_Race.wmv
It's a rather large file (60M), so dial-up users beware!

Gary, thanks for the vid! It's very useful to see how the car reacts in the hands of a skilled driver...
It seemed that your tires were only *really* good for like 6 laps, then they went off very quickly. After that it was obvious that you were having to baby them, losing ground to the Bimmers all the way.
Was the surface that abrasive, or was it the heat? It didn't look like you were overdriving them, really...but maybe that's my inexperience talking.
Great race, and thanks a ton for posting it. If you can find time in your schedule, I'm sure all of us would love to see future vids as well.

Nice Drive!
Gary - Although I've only watched the first video, I gotta say, it was an excellent bit of driving on your part. Very impressive stuff... good job!
All - Gary's crew chief wrote out the narrative to this race here, http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=267087 and it really puts things in perspective when watching the video.
Again, congrats on a well driven race!

Gary-
the vidoes are cool...what a great way to show off the series and your car for the sponsors.... and yes, that thing was handling like a pig!
-Ben
All-
I was there with Gary and Joel to witness the shenanigans that happened, and I must say "Kudos" to these guys for hanging in there and fighting it out. Gary stayed cool even with an ill handling car and just drove his own race.....no need to let the chlidish antics of the beeeeemer crew get you down! Go get 'em in Laguna...wish I could be there with you again, but I'll be driving at Willow Springs that weekend, so may the force be with you!

it was funny how you gave him a 'kiss' on his bumper! that was some amazing vid!! were you really tired towards the end? I would imagine it's one thing if you are just trying to drive as fast as possible by yourself. but it's more stressful when trying to catch someone.

Gary,
I sort of follow your progress in the USTCC on the little one page newsbrief that Sport Compact Car Magazine has each month. I must say, seeing your success in the car we all love the most certainly makes my heart swell with pride. :p Especially pitted against the Bimmers, Acuras, and so on. Excellent job.

Such a great battle of cars. Thanks for the full length video!
As a request could you also setup a 2nd camera positioned on your feet? Much like the japanese racing videos for drifting. I really would like to see your footwork while braking and setting up for a turn.

Great Job
Im DLing the vid now. You are doing a great job and I hope you continue your success in road racing. I hope to see you again at next years East Coast venue (you wouldnt happen to know what track that will be?). You and Joel were great let us sit in the car and checking out your setup. Its a shame you couldnt run the full race at Summit Point.
Im confident you and Joel can get this understeer problem solved before the next season.
Good Luck

Hey Gary, this is sorta off the topic, but will the USTCC be coming to Summit Point next year? I didn't get to make it out this year for the race, but I hope I will next year. Good luck with the series. :)
