GDG Racing STI's @ Fontana

We're heading down to Fontana for the SCCA race January 27-29th. This will be our first event in the ex-ICY/PHOENIX Subarus. They are prepped and ready to go. Should be a fun weekend at California Motor Speedway. Come out and pay us a visit!

Sounds cool. I'll try to make it out there as a spectator after Friday classes. Which run group will you guys be in, R8 or N1?

We just got back from a great weekend at Fontana! GDG Racing finished 1-2 in T2. The weather was great for the Subarus with cold air and track temps. Fortunately our first weekend on Hoosiers went very well. They stayed very consistent during the 16 lap race.
We'll get some photos/video up on the website in the next few days. Thanks to those who stopped by to say hello.

I just watched the video in your website http://www.godoggoracing.org/
Congratulations on a well-executed race. I enjoyed seeing both of you pass the M3 and that pesky yellow Camaro - the comments in the video were also fun !

Well done, what no EVO's running ahead of you guys... They must be in T1 i guess as they are clearly the superior track car.

I didn't get a chance to make it out there this weekend with midterms and whatnot, but looks like I missed a good one. Congrats!

Go away.
Good job and a good race. Maybe its just me, but in a few turns Derek's car seemed to lock the rears while trailbraking and do a little tail slide. Nice drive and congrats on your guys 1-2.
Nice video too :)

Trhoppe you need to work on your sense of humor man. Maybe step away from OT for awhile. Again well done to GDG.

404, no smiley found ;) I thought you were serious.
In all seriousness though, the EVO 9 setup and well driven well will smear the STi. The cars are fairly well matched right now, and another 50whp that the 9 has over the 8 will make a big difference.

no problem count it as mistype of  or misuse of . Your statement is what I was poking fun at, despite the EVO's apparent superiority I dont see any doing well in any form of racing. In T2 the STi is ruling the roost as I'm sure your aware. I dont see any in the top 5 in NASA races. I dont keep up with drag racing at the production level so maybe they dominate there. I guess my question is why dont more teams like GDG use the "superior" EVO instead of our beloved STi?

That's a good question. I think in part it could be sponsorship. Mitsu is broke and has an uncertain future. Subaru is doing fine. If you're dumping the kind of money that Phoenix is into the program, then this has to be a consideration.
On the autox front, however, the Evo is doing just fine. There were fewer in ESP at Nats and they trumped the STis.
Oh, and on our Mustang AWD dyno, a stock STi puts down about 235 HP and a stock Evo 9 we dyno'd the other day put down 260 HP.
I wouldn't be the least bit suprised if an Evo takes T2 this year at Heartland.

I guess that makes sense. I didnt realize Subaru put that much sponsor money into the grassroots programs. the dyno numbers are very interesting, do you know if its less driveline drag or is the stock motor putting out more power at the crank? I'll be watching in November to see how the two cars do at the Nats, but i'll be rooting for the Subaru's!

We have $500 contingency $ for winning a national. GDG Racing took home I think $800 from Subaru for their 1-2 efforts at Fontana. Mitsu has squat :) Not much compared to what you spend, but its still $800.
Someone will build up an Evo trust me.
Last but not least GDG have last years' Subaru Motorsports cars that they purchased from ICY, so it all starts with Subaru backing T2 and making the cars in the first place. I bet if Subaru didn't have that effort last year, there would be quite a few less Subarus in T2.

The Subaru contingency program certainly helped our decision but it was more about the reliability issues of the Mitsubishi that turned us off. We interviewed several Mitsu racers and they all had reliability issues.
Subaru has made a tremendous effort to work with all types of auto racing. Rally, road racing and drag racing all have a Subaru presence.
Makes it fun to be a small part of it.

What happened to the Lexus? I was wondering where you disappeared to... (DSP competitor)
:)

I turned the Lexus into an ITE car to get my competition license. It is a great car that is very competitive regionally.
It is now for sale. http://my.is/forums/showthread.php?t=268712

I appreciate you guys opening my eyes to the extent of Subaru's contingency program. I always knew they sponsored rally teams and when I met Gary Sheehan at Summit Point one year he had mentioned some factory backing as well. Im glad subaru backs the grassroots efforts and I look forward to seeing more Subaru's at televised events like Grand Am and World Challenge.
It is amazing watching these cars go from one team to another to another. Good Luck to GDG and GOTO and Irish Mikes this year. Go Subaru! HEHE
I also find DerekB's comments on reliability interesting. The Mitsu Powerplant is claimed to be bulletproof, is it the rest of the driveline that is the issue or other parts of the car that are the issue?

Power steering for example goes out quick. Not sure about other issues.

What Tires and Fuel do you use?
And you can't use Camber Plates ?!

They are using Hoosier R3SO* and 100 octane. T2 cars are stock except for shocks and cat-back.

I didn't say it was the powerplant. I've heard everything from half shafts to trannys to powersteering issues. A local T2 Mitsu has broken almost every weekend I've seen it.

What size tire?
Is that the "best" tire ... how does that tire compare to a Kuhmo 710?
Would they be able to use a 710?
I got five laps at Willow Springs in a new ASP Z-06 last weekend, running 710's. I was surprised at how well they held up. They seemed faster then RA1's ... but I guess wouldn't last as long.

We considered Kumho but the 710 is a dual purpose tire (autox and road race). Hoosier has both A and R compound tires in the proper size 245/40 and the best rain tire in the business.
The A compound Hoosier should prove as fast as the V710 and the R compound will take heat better. Overall we feel the Hoosiers will be more consistent and equally fast.
V710 is a great tire but is trying to be all things to all people. Having run both brands over the last 5 years I feel the Hoosier is the way to go for our current needs.

Another question which has been bugging me.
I would have expected that M3 to blow by you on the long straights at Fontana. Isn't it much faster in that section? More HP, better Aero, gearing etc?
