Gen. Community's view on mudflaps part 1

Gen. Community's view on mudflaps
So, lets start a debate. I've been eyeing the rallyarmor mudflaps lately, due to the fact that once the WRX sideskirts go on, I'll have to take off the splash guard set. I was thinking mudflaps would look pretty nice.

However, what do you guys think? Are mudflaps lame unless they actually see lots of mud action? Do they look good? Or do they not?

Would YOU guys put mudflaps on?
nick04263 11-15-2005 02:45 AM

I wouldn't. I am sure someone has a picture for you on here but I can't picture them looking right. Just my opinion.
Spore 11-15-2005 02:46 AM

Well... I sometimes to go places where its a mud swamp when it rains, and the mudflap can prevent the mud from splashing it all over the bottom of the car. Besides, it looks nice (some looks hideous though) :D

But if you only drive on roads, mudflap is near useless...
Slik 11-15-2005 03:30 AM

I'd never put mudflaps on as a purely asthetic addition. Even if they're actually going to serve the purpose for which they were created, they still look retarded on most vehicles that aren't trucks IMO.

I vote no on teh mudflaps.

But the real question is would YOU (HolyCrikey) put them on? Who cares what everyone else thinks if you like it. It's your ride ;)
MannyMohawk#5 11-15-2005 03:41 AM

Unless I had a hardcore rally car, I would go sans mudflaps. who cares if you screw up your paint? That's why Jesus invented body shops.

Ahh, yes but that doesn't mean that both cannot be had simultaneously ;)

Don't currently have any but I am strongly considering a set. I vote yes.

Mudflaps will save your paint and undercarriage more times than you might think (from general road crud and especially if you live in an area where they cinder or salt in the winter), and considering they came standard on a 91 Civic Si hatchback, I don't think you can make the argument that they only belong on "a serious rally car."
garie 11-15-2005 06:33 AM

^^ exactly if you have crappy roads and such I would totally get mudflaps and put them on during the winters.....but I live in southern cali and I only drive on pavement.
salem 11-15-2005 06:42 AM

I had some, but took them off. My sideskirts somehow became more scratched up after I put them on than before. Brand new, they looked good; however, over the next few months, as they began to fade, they didn't look so good.
DrD 11-15-2005 07:14 AM

I definitely think they are a good idea, but I really don't like the look of the rally-armor or other sheet-o-rubber type mudflaps - particularly the ones which stick way out from the side of the car (which is more of a function thing, and I am sure helps out when your wheels aren't straight, etc. - I still don't like the look) - If you really wanted them, I would say get a set of oem flaps - they can be modified to fit over the WRX sideskirts (there has been at least one person who has done that here - check on scoobymods - I think there is a writeup)
f4phantomii 11-15-2005 07:18 AM

I put some nice form-fitting rubber molded ones on my last car. It was notorious for spraying water, gravel, and anything else on the road right onto the side of the car.

After I installed them, it cut out that kind of stuff almost completely. I didn't mind them, and they looked nice enough that they could have come from the factory as part of the trim. They were a little nicer than the standard rubber flap, even though I'd bought them at Wal-Mart.

I wouldn't hesitate to put them on my STi, however, it doesn't seem to have as much of a problem throwing/spraying stuff like my old car did. I'd put them on, but I'm not sure it would really be a benefit and I'm cheap. As for aesthetics, I'm neutral.....can live with them, can live without them.

I just bought a set of Rallyarmor flaps for this winter. As anyone who has ever driven in the Northeast during winter knows, the salt/sand combo that gets all over the roads is brutal on your paint and undercarriage. The Rallyarmor flaps are very strong, and don't look as bad as those cheap plastic rubber flaps you sometimes see. Living in North Carolina however, I have no idea how much need you may have for the flaps.
enewtabie 11-15-2005 07:52 AM

I love my prodrive flaps..With the crappy subaru paint, they really come in handy.
Just look at the hood and imagine the side of the car that way. Besides, who can afford to get their car repainted so much?
vapore0n 11-15-2005 08:23 AM

I have the rally armor MF and they are great. Look cool and work.

thats my view on them :D
hikeeba 11-15-2005 09:08 AM

Wow, that's a sa-weet RS kevin. Makes me miss mine even more. Very nice.

I vote yes on the mudflaps. I am currently working on making my own. I hope to have them finished before Dec. I am doing the mudflaps/mudguards for function fist, but I'm hoping I can lend a little more form to the project.

Mnyehh, if you like the look then go for it. I've seen mudflaps on subies that look absolutely horrible. So I say no.
skunkfifty 11-15-2005 09:28 AM

Look at it another way: when its raining or snowing outside, follow a car with mud flaps and one without. now here the magic happy-time fun part, watch yourself grow more and more angry at the guy with no mud flaps as your windshield gets covered in spray and crap.
Bonus round!: follow him down a gravel road and try to dodge the rocks he throws at you! Loose one point for every ding in your hood.

Point is, mud flaps help the other people out on the road too, they serve a purpose and every car should have them. if your afraid of how they look just get some with that naked lady silhouette on them, those are always classy.

OMG, that's why I don't wear my seatbelt! Who cares if you get horribly injured in a crash, that's why Jesus invented hospitals!!

On a serious note, I have rally armor flaps. They aren't too conspicuous, and they have saved my paint quite a few times, esp. when I'm going over roads under construction. Once you have them, you'll notice the difference immediately.
nate.the.great 11-15-2005 11:12 AM

whoops, double post.
gleinz 11-15-2005 12:02 PM

Another vote for Rally Armor mudflaps... I got some because I drove through a construction zone once and got tar all over the sides of my car... took forever to get it off. It'll also help with the dirt, snow, and salt in the winter.
thorongil 11-15-2005 12:15 PM

I'll add my vote for mud flaps too, especially if you see snow (but you don't see much in Charlotte, NC), gravel/dirt roads, construction zones, or rain, or if you're tires like to throw rocks (like my new M3s seem to do). Mudflaps help you keep your car cleaner and more scratch-free and they help motorists behind you. You won't be disappointed.
Wazazell 11-15-2005 12:15 PM

Before I put on my Rally Armor MFs I'd have to rinse my wash mit multiple times when washing the lower part of my doors. The mit would be dirty after one small swipe. I washed this weekend and my doors were barely dirty, the rockers were still filthy though.

Also the stock Potenzas on my STi are very sticky, they'll pick up and throw anything they run over. A few weeks ago a friend of mine was following me on the highway and he said my car was throwing rocks onto the hood of his lifted Tacoma.

I like the way they look though, the rears look a little funny/wide, but the fronts look nice!

They were the first thing I bought for my car, a set of rally armors. People usually say they like the look, and they keep the sides clean and chip free. I might take them off next summer, only because they eat pavement quite often when cornering uphill.
bushflyr 11-15-2005 12:52 PM

Yust doo eet, mon. RallyArmor's look great and really keep the crap off your car, not to mention making other drivers happy in nasty weather.
Broken-Stv 11-16-2005 01:58 AM

I vote for the Rally Armor mudflaps... Helps that i have a set installed... I would recommend them, especially if you ever intend to drive thru the Dragon. I believe it is in NC.

i have flaps, keep them on all year too to brave the harsh weather of california. I think they've kept my $50 painted side skirts chip free and kept a lot of dirt and rocks from coming up and hitting the fenders, doors, rear bumper, etc. plus they stick out a bit and serve as a vocal reminder if I'm getting too close to the occasional curb. I ghettofabed mine from a universal set from pepboys and sourced out hardware (~45 dollars total), though if I did it again, I would just buy the hardware pack that fastline sells for theirs and save the hassle. I think they give my wagon a wider stance since it doesn't have fender flares and also tie in the larger wheels I have (18" prodrive) as well as providing a lot of protection. Some people can't stand the look, but I say go for it, they come off easy if you don't like em.
pleue 11-16-2005 04:02 AM

mine have eaten a lot of pavement, but now that I have fitted and cut them to my liking, I can replace/make the whole set for around 10 minutes and 25 bucks.

Sparco's baby. Can't front on the massive elephant ears.
Hank3 11-16-2005 08:47 AM

I personally wouldn't put any on unless they were the earlier model Prodrive ones (pics from another member on here):

Second alternative would be these, but they're a tad to big for my tastes and don't flow as well - even if they are Prodrive :)
