Hardwiring Radar Detector ?

I know they sell the hardwire kits for radar detectors and I know they can really go into any 12v in the car but I was wondering this...
I have the homelink/autodiming mirror thingie and there are 3 wires comming out from that to that run to the roof...is it possible to tap into thoes for a 12v and ground for a hardwire radar detector hookup? They are a large gauge wire, so it makes me think it might not work but this would save me running wires all the way down behind the dash.
I would love to mount my radar detector above the mirror as it puts it out the immedate view of potential thiefs etc...
Anyone try this or is this not possible?

Anyone got a pic or can tell me which wire is which.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Radar detectors needs to be mounted as low as possible to be most effective. Cops point the guns at the bumpers because it's inaccurate when they shoot at the windshields.
Should still work but most radar detector manufacturers recommends that you mount them as low as possible on the dash.

Thanks for the link. I usually look there for all teh how-to's but I didn't even bother to for this.
I'm sure any old radar detector would work with this idea, it doesn't have to be the valentine 1. I'm thinking of getting any old half decent Cobra and just getting the hardwire kit from there website for $10.
Thanks guys.

One last question, do I need something like this or can I just cut the ends of the cig adapter off and put them into the 12v and ground.

Here's where I've got mine mounted. There's a gap right between the dots and the mirror where it fits great!

Hardwire radar detector

This thread lives!!!
I'm planning on hardwiring my Bel express 925 detector to the area that should connect to the auto-dimming compass. I have read the Valentine 1 installation instructions on ScoobyMod. I would not be using a smart cord, but instead would just cut off the cigarette adapter portion of the power cord. Does anyone know if I can connect this directly to the auto-dim power area?
Thanks!
Eugene

I'm not sure this is accurate. Valentine's site recommends that the detector be mounted high so that it has the farthest possible sight distance. This makes sense, because the point of a radar detector is to pick up reflected radar signals; i.e. the folks in front of you (or behind) being hit. If an officer is hitting you with radar, your detector is really just letting you know you've been busted. So the consideration is not where the cop is aiming the radar on your car, but how to maximize detection range. Thus the advantage of high mounting.

It's not accurate. People don't realize that laser (and obviously radar as well) speed measuring devices do not shoot beams like a true laser does. By the time the laser beam hits your car, it's ~3 feet across. Radar waves? Forget it, they're all over the place. My V1 will pick up radar if it's sitting on the floor. The difference in radar pickup between placing it on the bottom of the windshield and the top is ~1/10th of a mile. Is that a big enough distance to matter? Not really. Could it help you? Sure. Put them as high up as possible. Theoretically mounting them lower would be better for laser detection, but it really does not make a difference because the cone is so large. And with laser, pretty much once it goes off, you've already been caught... Unless it's picking up a beam that's aimed at cars in front of or behind you and going through their windows. Radar is not like this, since you can pick up a cop checking other cars half a mile ahead of you.

Mine is mounted low on the dash over to the right hand side. I had it in the glove box plugged in one time and it still picked up radar so I'm not really worried about the reception. I used a hard wiring kit from bestbuy... cost like $10 or so. I just spliced it into my cig lighter harness.

So where can I find a switched 12V power source so I can get my V1 hardwired up? I was going to use the back of the cigarette outlet but i dont know if the cords are long enough to reach everything. Are there any 12V switched sources by the passenger side of the car?

I assume you intend to mount it low on the dash? Because otherwise the map light wiring would work just fine.

If you're going to mount it low, tap in to the clock. If you're going to mount it high, tap in to the map lights.

Im actually putting it up by the rear view mirror, im just worried that I wont be able to fit this massive hardwire kit up under the head liner. Its this massive black box.
I stole this off the V1 site. Its pretty sizable. Inch by 3/4 Id say.

Im basically putting this kit back together after it was scattered throughout my house and in and out of other cars my family has had

Get an add a circuit - http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=071-580
Works great. No splicing or tapping and very easy to remove.
My V1 is above my mirror. Used the add a circuit in the rear wiper slot so it is switched power. I mounted the hardwire adapter up under the dash between the steering column and the console. It's very easy to get to.
I had plenty of wire to run up the sail panel and through across the windshield.
Just as stealth as tapping the map or mirror but much less trouble.

The hardwiring kit already comes with everything you need, no need to buy anything extra. (And Parts Express shipping is recockulous... It costs almost as much as the hardwiring kit itself) It is very easily installed and removed. (I've done it on multiple cars.) Then, the wiring is already right where you intend to put the detector. You can't honestly argue that running a wire from the fuse box, up to the headliner, and across the windshield is less trouble than running it 8" straight forward from the map lights.

Do it however you want dude. Just giving some advice on the way I did it. If you like puting vampire clips on your factory wiring and taking apart your map light, go right ahead. And there is no need to order these things. You can get them from Pep boys or any other parts store. I was just linking as an example. And seriously, running the wire was the easiest part of the whole install. Took like 5 min. Get over yourself, it's Sunday AM. Chill out.

If you have ever looked under your dash at some of the wiring, you'll notice that even Subaru uses wire taps when assembling our cars.

RP I was just thinking. If I use the map lights hook up, will the V1 just turn on and off when I power the car on and off? I dont really want to be turning the V1 on and off all the time I enter and exit the vehicle. Because Im going to forget at some point to turn it off and then Ill have a dead battery.
Do I need to put my splice before a certain part of the map lights? Because if I remember correctly, map lights switch on and stay on no matter the key in or out or the car on or off.

Well you're not actually using the map light power, you're using the auto-dimming rearview mirror wiring (but you must remove the map lights to get to it.) The power would turn on and off with the car. Check out the link in post #7.

Ok so I figured all that out, but the pictures are missing at scooby mod. Im going to search the site a bit more to see if i can find it, but which wire is the positive lead and where do i ground to? It says one of the screws on the body, but can I use a grounding wire up there with the dimming mirror plug? If so, again, which one? Maybe ill try to learn how to use a multimeter... :P
| DK1102 | 09-30-2007 04:18 PM |
I see 3 wires, 1 black and its in the center of the clip and 2 of some other 2 colors. Are the the other 2 wires both 12V positive to run the auto dim and the compass and then they are grounded to the center black negative lead?
| RP31 | 09-30-2007 04:56 PM |
Do you have a multimeter to test them? IIRC, both are 12v switched, but one will switch off when the car is put in reverse.
| DK1102 | 09-30-2007 05:09 PM |
Well I hope I picked the right one... I guess Ill test that reverse thing right now... Gahhhh!!!!!

I did multi meter them and I used the one that made the dial move when the car was in 1st gear or neutral. but im off to test it

Make sure the window and suction cups are clean a dry before you try to put them on. I had issues with my 9500i until I cleaned everything and pressed really hard to get them to stick. I have not had an issue since. Periodically press them back into the window as they will loosen up over time.

mine falls down all the time. i finally put a little slobber on it and it's stuck fine since then.
