Whistle vibration sound coming from oem spoiler at 120mph +?

I had my dealership install the stock spoiler when i bought my 03 wrx. I took it for a late night high speed run last night and once i hit around 120mph+, the rear of the car started to make a weird vibrating whistling sound. Has anyone else had this roblem? Im pretty sure it was the wind combination with the spoiler that made this sound.

I have not heard this sound from mine. (ive been that speed once) I have heard that the side mirrors make wind noise at high speeds too, but hasnt happend to me. Good luck:D

Rally1, that was freak'n funny!
I've taken mine to 138... I want to see if it'll go faster, but not with the stock rims and tires.

never had mine even close, when I lived up in Montana 120mph in the Talon was easy and even legal.
In soCal i dont think i've been over 90.....

I've heard a number of people note noise from the side mirrors at about that speed. Could it have been the mirrors? I've had my car up around there but I don't remember hearing anything other than my stereo.

It's the windoes that are making that noise. It's because at high speeds (120+) the windows actually pull out a little causing a loud and annoying whistle. If our cars had window supports like most other vehicles then it probably wouldn't happen.
I know the first time I broke 120mph the whistle scared the crap out of me so I slowed down and it went away. Then I sped up and it came back. What can you do, right:rolleyes:

Yep, it's the windows.. Mine does it too. All the way up to the governor
| jesse370 | 12-06-2002 04:05 PM |
the only speed limiter our cars have is drag. the car runs out of steam to push it any faster through the air stock.
| Javabean2 | 12-06-2002 04:08 PM |
I don't think the wing or the mirrors was engineered with 100+mph speeds in mind, and considering the fact that the stock wing is "cosmetic only" according to SOA, it wouldn't be too surprising if it did weird things at speed.

I don't remember any window noise when I went that fast, mayb my exhaust is 2 loud......I have 2 wait till da snow melts 2 remind myself.

The windows in my GC8 do this starting at about 65~70mph. Very anjoying, I usually roll down one of the windows an inch or so but then the car pulls to the side because of the pressure difference.
Bugs the living daylights out of me. Wish I knew how to fix it.

I can testify that the mirrors ARE infact designed with those high speeds in mind.
I'm sure some members with '02 imprezas have run into the problem that the spring holding the mirror "locked" in place gives way and they mirror swings freely. Well, you'd expect that the faster you go, the more the mirror swings back toward the door.
NOPE! It pretty much flops around until you hit around 75, then it get a little more stable and mostly stays out. At about 95-100 and up it stays straight out like it would when it's functioning properly. I was doing 110 and it was like it was glued in place. Not even any noticeable vibration. Cool

Thats funny I have taken my car above 120 many times and I have only heard it once or twice, and I have always woundered what it is. I have hit 150 155 but I don't always get this noise. So where is it coming from the mirrors or window seals?

My RS had a horrible whistle ALL of the time. never figured what it was. It was either my window or maybe the mirrors cause it was in teh frnt of the car. my rex is whistle free.

the whistle is coming from the window NOT sealing. It sounds like it's coming from the trunk because it's right behind your ears. It's typically right where the far back edge of the window meets the seal. As mentioned before, as you go faster and faster, the air moving over it creates a vacuum similar to the way an airplane wing creates lift. This happened to me ALL the time in my old 95 neon. What worked for me there was to crack the window and close it again and it usually sealed up better.
This is probably a bigger problem on the 2 door GC8s due to the larger window and a little less rigidity because of it. The shorter window on a 4 door has less room to move.
Does that clear things up?

I thought I had the top speed on mine... I hit 146 (the "M" in MPH)... that was in 5th gear on the redline. How'd you hit 150-155???

a tail-wind.

| Sandkicker | 12-08-2002 02:39 AM |
I've had mine up just under 150 and I don't remember being at redline... seems like it was maybe 6200-6500 RPM... don't remember though, was kinda watchin the road. With everyone sayin the maxspeed is about 146 i'd say i must've had some type of tailwind, but i don't remember any. I also don't remember any whistling of any type.
| WRXGuyInUSA | 12-08-2002 06:50 AM |
tailwind has NO effect on the top speed. The car is physically geared out at the redline. A tailwind would just push it past redline, which would equal... BOOM!!!
| Subaruman03 | 12-08-2002 10:36 PM |
The top speed on the wrx with governor taken out is 158mph, which is red line in 5th gear. I knew I was doing this because the guy in the vette I was racing told me he was reading like 155-156 so... I know the rex can do that, and I put one of the cars at the dealership I work at, on one of the lifts and ran it through all 5 gears and the computer said 158 before the redlimiter cut the car off. I would not suggest taking your car to this speed, even though I do it whenever I get a chance :D.

Well its not BS and I will prove it to you just come down to Lewisville Texas. I had one of the high performacne Rex's that has the Cobb Clubspec kit with Uni-chip managment(not a customers car) and it ran all the way to red line in 5th gear and the computer read 158 before shut off.
WRXGuyInTulsa: Oh by the way the stock governor is taken off by bi-passing it with a piggy back computer or some kind of new computer managment. Now the stock rex could never go over 130 in stock form (governor limited). All I have to say is if you haven't tried it then don't talk about something you don't know about.

| WRXGuyInUSA | 12-10-2002 01:45 AM |
The "M" in MPH looks like 146... it's a simple rule of measurement. Look at the increments of 5, and roughly in your head, add 5 on... it's just a hair over that...
My WRX was stock when I did that... completely stock...
All the WRX's you've driven??? How many have you driven, and of that number, how many did you drive over 130???
I smell a huge pile of Bull****...
OK then....
Find me a chip advertised to bypass the governor on this car, and I'll take back everything I've said, and admit you were right, and I am wrong... Heck, why stop there, I'll fly to where you are and apologize in person... I'm that confident that it doesn't exist, because it doesn't need to exist... It's not govorned....

i know the Auto's have a speed cut out but definatly not on the 5spd.....idiot
As ina built WRX going faster well s sheet a ply wood can do 200mph with the right amount of HP behind it...of course i'm exagerating a bit but you get my point

For the 2 door GC8 guys with wind noise, check to see if the door is flush with the quarter panel. If the door is sticking out (or not), you may be able to loosen the door striker and move it in some.
Don't go too far, or the door will be too hard to close.
If the wind noise continues after THAT adjustment, a body mechanic should be able to adjust the glass, so it fits tighter to the weatherstrip. I would not try that one, unless you have done a few. You can make the noise worse or bust the glass when you try to close the door for the first time.
Always install the trim panel inside, before testing, as this panel puts pressure on the glass also.
Hope this helps you fellow GC8 guys.
WRX's can't go over 130 mph, so no help for you guys.............geeze.:)

The automatic WRX is governed electronically to 130mph
The manual WRX has no governor and will go as fast as drag will allow it to go.
