Have an STi key and that boring keyless entry FOB? Here's a solution!
Well, I just got my STi key cut today, and while looking at my keychain I noticed how boring the OEM keyless entry FOB is. So I decided to do something about it. It's Krylon time! :D
I took apart the FOB completely and washed all the pieces to be painted wish warm dish soap. Dried it all off, let it sit. Next a coat of primer on everything. Next, two coats of paint on the body of the fob (silver), and the buttons. And finally, two coats of clear on everything. In between each stage and coat I let it sit for about a half hour...
And now onto the pics (sorry, poor lighting):

It is a pretty damn good match I must say (the blue is a little darker than the key, oh well). It definately looks really cool!
Paint List:
1318 All Purpose Primer Gray
SCS0032(I think) Chrome (bling blang!)
1910 True Blue Gloss
1301 Crystal Clear
All of this paint is Krylon, and the "chrome" paint is Krylon short cuts...
Let me know what you think!

You get major props for that. I wish I knew something about painting... :)

I agree the key makes the fob look bad.
Your solution is great! I think I will steal this mod from you.
Do you think the paint will hold up to normal wear and tear?

It should hold up pretty well I think. I am going to let the FOB sit in a nice dry area overnight to let it all sit and dry nicely.
I normally have a TON of crap in my pockets, so I should be able to give it a good torture test. I think the key is a lot of fine coats. And a a few coats of clear. It should be ok. If not, strip all the paint off and start again.
Glad you guys like it!

Easy way to make a duplicate key and steal his car.
I should know, my old eclipse was found in Mexico with
a home made duplicate key...

BTW, if you need to strip the paint use a cup of brake fluid,
it will melt the paint right off, but not harm the plastic.

Actually I think they did it because people were getting confused as to what button was lock and which was unlock.

Cool, it looks good painted to match. My wrx key fob has two grey buttons also, but my sisters legacy Gt limited had the red/blue ones. Maybe its a legacy thing then.

the people that haev the red and blue like myself are too poor to afford the alarm so we just have keyless entry, the gray ones are for the ones with alarms, (the special ones)

hmm, thought this was going to be a different post. i was expecting to find a vendor selling the key with the fobs built in. anyone know where to get one or a vendor selling these keys w/ built in fobs?

Subaru had the multi-color button fobs prior to the grey button ones. I got the colored one with my car, took it in to get my extra key and fob made, and got two grey button fobs with no colors anymore.
Props for the painting... looks really good.

Are you sure? I got my car in March '01 and I got the grey buttons. My friend who also got his car that month got the security system (I didn't), and also had grey buttons. 2 of my other friends who recently got theirs (about a month ago, and about 6 months ago) both got the coloured buttons, and again only one of them got the security system.
edit: Oh yeah, I really like how the painting of the fob turned out. I'm tempted. :)

I think the grey buttons come if you don't get the security system upgrade. Anyone else get the security upgrade w/ their car and have the grey buttons?

I have the security upgrade with colored buttons on my key fob.

The 2002 Impreza (April 2001, no security upgrade) I have has grey buttons.
The 2003 Forester (June 2002, no security upgrade) I have has the colored buttons.
I thought they made this change only recently instead of the other way round.

Yeah, you can call it the schleppy mod :D
Long term update. After a few days in my pocket with tons of change a metal money clip, the fob has a few scratches in it (all the way down to black). Looks like I should have throw a few more coats of everything on it...
So, updated direction, do two more coats of everything! (EXCEPT the buttons, too many coats and they won't move freely)...
Hope that helps!

You can put more coats of everything on the buttons, just wrap masking tape on the side of the button, and the only dimension that'll be changed is the top surface of the button

The first shipment of WRX's had grey. Some of these had the clutch chatter, passenger window, and e.c.u. problems. When the second gen. 2002 WRX came over, the buttons were multicolored.

Thanks Schleppy I though about doing this a while ago just let it go.
The scratches are from my crappy sand job and the black paint has speckles of silver that went into the crevasses. It's not as bad as it looks, its just showing up good because I scanned it in.

I always thought it'd look better if I painted the blue on the key black. Anyone else thought of this? I just haven't had the balls to do it because I always screw up DIY projects.

It's do-able, but you would have to really take your time taping off the metal parts of the key...
