heated shift knob? part 1

Micker72 12-24-2006 11:51 PM

heated shift knob?
does anyone know if a heated shift knob exsists and if so where i can buy one?
bWRX 12-25-2006 12:25 AM

I have got to say that is an excellent idea, but no, have never heard of such a thing.:)

By the time a heated knob got up to temp your hand would've already heated the knob. I guess what i'm trying to say is that it's worthless unless you plan on waiting a couple minutes for the knob to heat up.
nhluhr 12-25-2006 03:03 AM

Heated seats work in just a matter of seconds, no reason a knob couldn't also work that quickly.
firebox40dash5 12-25-2006 10:20 AM

I've never heard of a heated shift knob... I usually just use my hand to heat it.

But I know Maxima SE's had heated steering wheels... not practical at all, but pretty cool.

The only way I can see this working efficently is if the element was placed on a knob and then wrapped with leather or a similar material. Again, in few seconds it takes for your had to bring a leather knob up to a comfortable temperature, your hand would have already done the job. If you cannot deal with the momentary cold from a leather wrapped knob you need to grow a pair.
If the OP is looking for something like a metal knob with a heating element it would have to be of a fairly thin gauge which would therefore have no weight to it = crap. Then you have to deal with routing the wires, setting up a relay/fuse, etc... Plus, good luck finding a small enough heating element, and btw: You aren't suppost to sharply bend or remove much material from the elements. Therefore, conforming to a ball knob would be very difficult. All this just for a heated shift knob?
Just my opinion, but to each their own.
El Capitan 12-25-2006 11:24 AM

How about just pointing your heater vents down on it so that while the car is heating up it warms the knob for you ?
Master2192 12-25-2006 11:27 AM
have no weight to it = crap.
This makes no sense. Why exactly do you think a shift knob that weighs next to nothing equals crap?

Also, if someone was going to go through the trouble of making a heated shift knob they would probably get a heating element made and they don't need to be big either.

I think FigNuts gets
The purpose of aftermarket shift knobs is to add weight to the top of short shifters.

When you shorten a shifter it will cause more effort by the driver to make shifts. A weighted shift knob will counter this effect making shifts easier.

Well, in reguards to shift knob weighting I would suggest you use that search button before you post next time.

Plus, I never said it was impossible to make a heated shift knob. Stupid? Yup. I'm sure it would be real cheap to have an element custom made too.

For your worthless post you can imagine this :disco: spanking your backside. Thanks for playing.

wow thanks for the good advice.......
nqwan 12-25-2006 01:35 PM

I would much rather have the opposite, ie. a Kartboy shiftknob that doesn't burn your hand after being parked in the sun.

you can move to Mi or somewhere it gets cold :)
another trick i've seen is to get a kiddie sock. it will help in the summer and winter.
turboscooby13 12-25-2006 02:30 PM

^ What he said. A baby sock works perfect.

Maybe we also need a thread for a knob with it's own AC unit?

So I'm assuming when someone probably made a topic about heated seats a couple of years ago when they didn't exist, you would say the same thing?

Little ideas like this topic make cars better everyday. Why not a heated steering wheel, shift knob, and seat? I'm sure people laughed at power windows in the early 80's also.
Scooby_Wong 12-25-2006 05:54 PM

if you want, metallic shift knob like a razo or something and then park in the sun...when you get back, it's gonna be so hot it'll sting

If the shift knob is really too HOT or COLD for your hands then just unscrew it and bring in inside with you. Simple.
ttatsumi 12-26-2006 10:36 AM

park...take off shift knob...put it in ur pocket...when u come back to ur car put it back on. haha

No it isn't. Off Topic is your evidence.

You, however, are growing pretty cynical my friend! :)

I have a really cheap and easy way to solve your problem.
