Hella Super Tones... Installed

Well, I got my Hella Supertones, they are the 500-300 models... got them from ebay for $35! Here are some pictures showing before, red, and then after i painted them black today! They are SO loud. I love it! Great for getting people out of your way in a hurry, or scaring the crap out of your friends!

I left mine red cause Im too lazy to paint them.
Its wierd how so many people just walk by and stare at the horns. I get asked all the time to honk them.

haha, i think he ment the grill on the horns... but yes, you remove them from the car... and then the grills come off with like 8 screws... just sanded them down a little, painted them black, clear coated them, then put everything back together... looks really good in person... not as obvious as the red... but still mean!

can someone point me to a thread on how to remove that orange crap from the headlights? like he has here..
| vadim | 05-24-2004 08:18 AM |
One more thing, those are great horns but I have a set too, one of these threads but I used the German model as it is about 5 or 6 Db louder and rather pleasant..

SirBryanClark - did you use the included relay when you hooked these up?? I just installed mine this past weekend and was hoping they'd be a little louder than they ended up, but I didn't use the relay.....ended up just swapping out the stock horns w/the Hellas.

Alright! Someone who mounted them in the same place as I did!

use the relay!
| mindchatter | 05-24-2004 02:04 PM |
migs76 - well, that's just the thing. I called Susquehenna Motorsports (where I got them) and explained how I wired them. I told the guy that while they were probably 2-3x louder than stock, they didn't seem likely to cause any hearing loss (which is how a lot of Hella fans have described them here). He said that using the included relay may make them slightly louder, but not any significant difference. So I was just curious if SirBryan had used the relay, as he seems very impressed overall.
Did you use the relay migs? I'm just trying to get some general consensus from those that did vs. those who didn't.....not sure I wanna spend the extra hour or so to rewire them unless I know there's a vast difference to be had......

They looked better in red, IMO, but black is rather stealthy... nice job
| migs76 | 05-24-2004 04:21 PM |
i've heard them with and without. i have them wired with the relay and i think it totally makes a difference. since you said you don't want to spend the extra hour to rewire them, sounds like you've already made up your mind.

migs - you're confusing me somewhat man. I said.....
"not sure I wanna spend an hour or so to rewire them unless I know there's a vast difference to be had."
and you said....
"i've heard them with and without. i have them wired with the relay and i think it totally makes a difference. since you said you don't want to spend the extra hour to rewire them, sounds like you've already made up your mind."
So.....thanks for your informative response, it was just the kinda feedback I was looking for.

There are a couple different models of the Supertones. a 113dB and a 118dB come to mind. It's not all in the relay, but you should use the relay and wire appropriately.
For $35, you probably got the 113dB. Not shabby, I've got that set in one of my cars, the 118dB in another.

The ones i Used were the 300HZ and the 500HZ, from what I understand, those are the loudest ones... I didnot use a relay. The stock relay plugs right into the horns with no problems. They are VERY loud. I seriously doubt a relay will make any difference. The different models are different volumes... but i doubt the relay would make a difference. I see no reason for messing with the wiring...
| mindchatter | 05-25-2004 02:39 PM |
Thx very much guys! I have the 118db set, which are 300Hz and 500Hz. I may just re-wire them to hear the difference (if any) from them being done with versus without a relay. If I feel motivated I will post back to report my findings.

thats strange that your arent loud enough... have you heard them from the front of the car???? I have the 118db set... and from inside the car they arent so loud... but if you are standing in front of the car.... even at a great distance, it will seriously hurt your ears.... VERY LOUD....
| mindchatter | 05-25-2004 04:01 PM |
Oh no - they're definitely louder than stock, for sure. I just remember when I was initially researching them, I read comments like....
"they are loud..
a friend had them.. you could get people to jump out of thier seat when you hit them"
"****ing loud, I had them mounted in my brake duct holes on my RS, people wanted me dead."
etc., etc. While they're certainly startling, I don't foresee folks jumping out of their seats or anything, that's all. Methinks I will revisit the wiring with the relay and see what the difference is...

booo red looked hot behind the black grill :(
i wired my supertones both ways first splicing it into the stock wiring then with the relay
i have to say the relay made it much louder and if i did it again i would have always used the relay

Supertones are directional. They won't sound that loud from inside the car. You'll have to stand in front of it and have someone hit the horns. Don't say we didn't warn you.
I've actually had people jump. Of course, I've also had people ignore them.

Keep in mind they're very directional. I have a set in my Miata, and even with the top down they don't sound that loud. But people jump in their cars if I get on them.
Stand in front of your car and have someone give them a blast. LOUD.

I fitted them to my wagon (118 dB ones, with the relay). I also left one of the stock horns in place too. Inside the car they sound loud, but not deafening -they do make the floor vibrate though ! (I kid you not.) From in front of the car they are just ridiculously loud, don't do what I did and sound the horn while facing the wall in an underground parking garage, with the windows open. It's almost painful. I mounted mine behind the bumper so that just the tops of them show. This was because I have Hella500 drivinglights already blocking some of the airflow to the radiator and didn't want to block anymore, plus I did'nt want them to be too obvious, some little street urchin might take a fancy to them.

bump
| piker28 | 01-03-2005 10:21 PM |
its kinda a weird thing to get, because no mic will really record it how it sounds in person with the pitches
plus how you hook them up and what set you have all changes the noise

ic, so in your opinion, what horn sounds similar to the ones found on audi or lexus? i found OEM ones for 70 bucks and i dont really want to pay that much for it.
the reason i dont like the stock horns is because they sound really cheap, got used to the luxury car horns

rewiring isnt that hard, for my 99l, i used the female connectors (for a spade type connector) off the stock horn, just plugged it right up to the relay as its "switched" positive and ground. then the positive to the battery, and positive output to the horns. it took all of 20 minutes to cut/trim/crimp all connectors and tuck the relay away.
either way, i'm happy it is louder than my stocker (which no one would notice after cutting me off) someday i will grab pictures of mine. i dont think i have as much space as you new age folks, so i had to bend the bracket back a bit to keep it from pushing the grill out.
it doesnt seem as loud from behind the wheel, but its all projected forward so its definately loud in the front. i'm itching to honk at someone, but no one has been driving like an ass lately :\
