Hella supertones.. STi-ed part 1

Blazin 09-03-2005 12:47 AM

Hella supertones.. STi-ed
So got my hella supertones.. saw a lot of people had them mounted right behind the grille and I found 1 or 2 people who painted them flat black to "stealth" them. Well in my mound that's great for some people but for the rest of us who.. like things to match our engine bay, exterior, or interior painting is to match is key ;)

Sooooo here is my mod pre-install

1st thing is first the supplies:

next up is the prep work, first we must remove the metal grills from the horns, for all of you out there planning on doing any painting of these, You will need a 7mm socket to loosen the nut on the back of the 'screws' holding this grille on:

Neeext prepping the surface, I chose to use some liquid sander as I wasn't sure if this was enamel paint and what kind of surface treatment had been done, I also didn't want to leave any kind of scratches, the liquid sander basically removes any wax or glossy build ( clearcoat or laquer ) that has been placed on the surface.. perfect for a smooth bonding surface:

Sorry I don't have any before and after liquid sanding pictures; however, if you use this and rub it out really well you have a dull looking prepped surface with 0 scratches so you don't have to worry about fine sanding and painting and sanding etc etc.. perfect for those first timers

Next, primer:

Picked this enamel primer up at lowe's today and after liquid sanding the surface 2 thin coats is all i needed, the surface was smoooothe to the touch.. I can't say i've ever used THIS primer before but most of the time with any spray paint you have that rough surface, hence sand, paint, sand, sand, paint, sand etc.. So far so good

Next.. PAIIINT

for the paint I could not find an exact match for the STi pink in a spray can, yes I found some pinks that looked great in Acrylic $.99 tubes, but brush strokes and such are not my expertise and I'd rather have a slightly off pink than have brush strokes and ugly ass peeling paint ( acrylic's not the best for metal ).. So American Tradition English Rose satin finish worked for me:

Looks nice..

That is the final product in the drying stage.. with a coat of clear laquer to add a bit of shine ( satin finish = not glossy and bling blingin' )

So now its a test of the color match.. I used my STi replica rear strut brace end to test the exact match:

The bright pink on the right is the STi pink and the darker is the horn.. if you're unsure hehe..

It is off obviously side by side; however, In my mind that's ok because the horns will be 2-3" back behind a black plastic grille, in a shady area and the closest pink that will be near it is the STi emblem with the pink outline, that amount and that distance with all the factors added in I think will end up with a hard to notice difference..

and for the exterior match of pink rather than red it will tie in my loud horns to the overall appearance of the car.. the Horns go in next weekend I'll post pics of the install and the assembled horns when the paint dries..

PS should I paint the screws silver/chrome or leave them black..

Tell me what you think.. :disco: :disco:
LOLSTi 09-03-2005 12:49 AM

i want pics of them mounted! looks like a great idea. keep the thread updated...
joeyb7 09-03-2005 09:03 AM

good idea. Can you update us on the actual install...perhaps take pics of the install? i want to install these, but it seems that the install could be complicated.
Blazin 09-03-2005 09:29 AM

Assembled:

Color match dry:

Sooo.. looks like a good match to me.. its hard to tell once you've been looking at it for a while.. but seeing as it looks so good.. I doubt the small pink of the STi emblem will make these look WAYYY off like i had feared..

Got those install pics coming next saturday.. sorry for teh delay.. but I'm moving into school this weekend..

Time for some more packing.. and then moving.. and then unpacking.. and then.. BOOZIN' lol
neuspeed 09-03-2005 09:33 AM

If anything I'd paint them black because usually idiots try to steal them
Blazin 09-03-2005 10:17 AM

Very creative, congratulations.
EJS 09-04-2005 12:47 PM

Good Job man. The pink should look cool on the silver car.

heres a pic of mine on my red wrx. Not the best pic, but its from a subie drive while on the ferry. You get the idea though. Didnt have to paint mine to match :)

thsiao 09-10-2005 05:20 PM

Want pics of how it looks on the car!
shftat6 09-10-2005 10:09 PM

I just put mine on today, behind the grill as most of us have. I like your creativity in painting the grills. Personally I like the red, it goes well with my CGM.
WRXDriftR 09-10-2005 10:24 PM

i was gonna paint em blue, but i just left em red and it looks cool. the pink is so funny but awesome at the same time
thsiao 09-15-2005 02:25 PM

We need to see an updated pic with the hellas already installed!
:disco: :disco: :disco:
tacomaprime 09-15-2005 04:59 PM

Where did you get your supertones at?
John2.5RS 09-16-2005 02:33 PM

someone beat me to it
I was thinking of painting my bronze to match my wheels. Got any picks of the pinks mounted?
gallstone 09-16-2005 03:57 PM

Brake caliper paint may give a great finish-durable, a liitkle shiny and the blue might look great...http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/g2/caliper_paint.jsp A little pricey but maybe only a bit can be mixed up at a time.
Blazin 10-02-2005 05:46 PM

Installed the pinks.. pics up tonight... and I got the supertones at www.safedrives.com
BlueSTI4Me 10-02-2005 09:55 PM

I think black grills are better for the stealth look. I dislike seeing things behind the grill when I walk up to any car.

Hella supertones are just about 100% one-directional.

I'd rather have them open-air and pointing towards the idiot I'm about to scare the isht out of than worry about what my grille looks like ;)

Did he mount them in the wrong direction? Or are you saying to leave the covers off, I'm confused
ofay 10-03-2005 10:49 PM

FNR32 10-04-2005 01:09 PM

What do these sound like?
Blazin 10-04-2005 01:55 PM

Like your ears are exploding
grimm5577 10-04-2005 02:04 PM

why do you guys spend money uprading your horn? I mean if it sounded like the "dukes of hazzard" maybe that would be cool.. but?

I wish I was wealthy enought to waste money on such things...
jamesonc 10-04-2005 02:34 PM

Blazin, where you from in Maine man? I've never seen you around.
Snowphun 10-04-2005 02:35 PM

Horns aren't too pricey and they are a good upgrade. Pink horns, on the other hand...
grimm5577 10-04-2005 02:39 PM
Horns aren't too pricey and they are a good upgrade. Pink horns, on the other hand...
well I don't quite follow you on how they are a good upgrade? Granted I didn't/ don't know the price on such things but to me... they seem like a waste...
AzSandSlinger 10-04-2005 03:05 PM

Wait until you pull up behind a F250 Super-Duty driven by a teenager who STOPS on a right turn when the sign clearly states "DO NOT STOP". And when you honk, they look, laugh, stop longer, and then slowly proceed...

FF to a few days later... The SAME truck decides to piss you off again... this time he decides to remain stopped at a green light... looks at you in his side mirror, smiles, waves... you blast with a SuperTone set-up (coupled with an underhood air horn) and the driver nearly hits his head on the roof of his cab... He still remained a jackass, but the look on his face was priceless...

BTW.. I cannot claim that story, it happenned while I was driving with a friend of mine in his Civic (Fast, Stock-looking and not riced-out)...

That one look alone was worth the ~$50 (or so) he spent on the horn(s)

Blazin 10-04-2005 04:20 PM

how about any elderly person stopped in front of you taking a left when the NO LEFT TURN SIGN is right in front of them so they leave you parked on a 60 degree hill for at least 5 mins and your horn honk goes un noticed due to their lack of hearing.. supertone her and kill her.. no need to be alive causing me issues. lol
knotty_dread 10-04-2005 04:47 PM

Thats def a bahston mentality ^. Im not condeming, or condoning; im simply stating.
thsiao 10-04-2005 05:33 PM
Like your ears are exploding
Its really not as loud as everyone exaggerates... it will be pretty loud if you're like sitting in front of the horns... but at a distance, they are just louder than stock but its by no means the sound of Armageddon. :disco:
Blazin 10-04-2005 06:20 PM

have u been 20 feet ahead and honked at? It hurt my ears.. its just piercing.. not like bellowing but it sounds like ur ear drums may be damaged lol Fun ;)
