Helmet info?
I've got a few questions regarding helmets from you weekend SCCA racers.
1. What kind of helmets are you guys using? Could you please post a link to the style or brand of them.
2. Where is a good place to order online?
3. What should I look for in a helmet?
4. How do I size my head? on www.helmetcity.com they have a "size" chart but it doesn't exactly tell you how to measure your cranium.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

I have ridden motorcycles for years. I like either ARAI's or
Shoei's. Fit and finish is excellent. AGV and Suomy have newer helmets out that all of the moto-gp riders seem to like.
A local motorcycle shop should have several different models that you could actually go to and try on. I would reccomend doing this and speaking with one of their parts counter people. They are generally very helpful.
Look for a DOT and Snell 1995 or above standards (the shop will explain it to you)
this website should help.

Sorry about that, didn't check the site first.

Chaparral is the name of the company
their website is www.800-841-2960.com
they have specials often and even their regular prices aren't bad.

I've got an HJC C-12, it is a closed face helmet. I really like it, I feel very protected, and thus can push the car more then with an open face helmet. It was a bit pricy, but I am going to be able to use it for about 12 years, with lets say...6 events a year, so the 160 I spent on it comes out to very little over the time period.

What are the requirement differences for helmets between Auto-X and Club Rally?
| jprowland | 09-05-2002 03:35 PM |
Current newest rating you can buy is SA2000 (don't know if M2000 is available).
http://www.scca.org/amateur/performance_rally/02rulebook/index.html
ARTICLE 5:REQUIRED SAFETY EQUIPMENT
5.1.HELMETS
A.All drivers and co-drivers competing in ProRally ,ClubRally ,and RallySprint events must wear helmets that meet one of the following standards:
1.Snell Foundation:Snell SA95 or newer rating
2.British Standards:BS 6658-85 type A/FR,including all amendments.
3.SFI Foundation,Inc.:SFI Spec 31.1 or Spec 31.2
Snell 90 "SA"or "M"labeled helmets are approved for RallyCross use only.
B.The back of each helmet must be labeled in a neat manner with the following information about its wearer:Name, date of birth, blood type, allergies, date of most recent tetanus immunization, and other pertinent medical history (i.e.,diabetes,etc.).Helmets that does not pass scrutineering will be confiscated and returned after the event.
C.As the dating of the specifications will be updated from time to time, new purchases should be of the latest specification available. It is recommended that helmets be replaced every five years.
edit: Forgot to mention, Auto-X requirements are the same as Rally-X, i.e., SA90 or M90...
Also, an "M" helmet will generally be less than $100, an "SA" helmet is $200+ ($500 for a Peltor!) My recommendation would be a Bell Mag 4 open-face helmet, SA2000.
I bought an M95 helmet and later regretted it because I turned around only 6 months later and bought a SA2000 because I decided to take up co-driving. (Though, now at least my wife has a helmet when she decides to ride with me at a Rally-X).

I have a Simpson open face, it is very comfortable and does'nt get in the way of my glasses. I'm not sure if the exact model I have is still offered or not and they can run more costly then some other brands. I'd buy another one though.

Why would you feel that you CANT push the car with an open face helmet???
Its not like a cone is going to fly up and hit you in the face or something...

auto vs motorcycle
most true racing auto helmets have a fire resistant interior liner made of Nomex. the auto helmet shells are also able to withstand multiple impacts.
the motorcycle helmet interior liners are not fire resistant and are only capable of withstanding a single impact.
this impact req. is per the Snell foundation:

I use a Bieffe Predator that I bought at www.hms-motorsport.com for a few hundred bucks. Good helmet, full face, comfortable, removable liner so you can wash the sweaty nasties out, and nomex interior. It's kevlar too, so it's very light- an important consideration for your neck in an impact situation.

I just don't feel like I am wearing a helmet with an open face helmet. I know that it is basically jewellery, but I do push my car. I want to know that if I do flip it (or whatever) I will be fully protected. I don't have a 5 point safety belt, and still cringe whenever I think of what happened to Earnhardt last year.

I walked into a small local motorcycle shop and asked for a SNELL 95+ approved helmet. The owned asked, "You must race". Long story short, I purchased a full face SNELL 95 helmet for approx. $90.

I use a Bell M2 this year, and used a Bell Sport II last year. I like both. The M2 has a larger eyeport which is nice. Heres more info... http://www.soloracer.com/helmets.html
I always recommend a full face helmet, even for autocross, mainly because alot of autocrossers will eventually do a track event or diving school. You'll want a full face helmet for those, and many organizers will only allow SA rated helmets, leaving you out of luck if you have an M rated helmet.
Like the saying goes "If you have a $100 head, buy a $100 helmet"

There was one or two cars recently that have flipped at an autox. The one I remember was a jetta or golf (I think). Totally stock except for race tires. The driver turned the car left then back to the right really fast, when he turned it left it loaded the suspension and when it unloaded it was timed perfectly with turning back to the right and over he went. I think he even stuck out his arm to try and hold the car up.
There was another car at Nationals that got up on two wheels. They even got a pic of it. I will search around for it. The guy that I live with was there when it happened but he was looking the other way at the time.
Here in the NW we don't have very good autox sites. One is small and the other is narrow and long with bushes on the sides. I have seen cars go off and hit curbs and into bushes. I have a friend who was autoxing another friends Civic hatch with a ITR engine, he was going too fast and put it in the bushes/ditch. Caused appx 5k worth of damage to the car.
So yes, autoxing can be dangerous.

I've come pretty close to flipping a couple of times, my car stinks...and a quick lock from side to side would cause a ton of damage. There are also a lot of things to hit in my autocrosses, trees, lightpoles, etc.
I'm NOT going to be able to get you to believe me that I feel better with a full face helmet, but just believe me in the fact that I do feel better.

Ok, I just feel uncomfortable with full helmets... They feel like a hinderence to me, completely opposite is why im asking why you feel this way :p
And all of my autocrosses are on huge cement parking lots with nothing around but pavement and cones  Ive never seen any cars come close to fliping, or even hit anything... Lots of vipers and stuff doing 180's with bad drivers, but thats it... Oh well

The word is ARAI is the one to get. I heard that the guy who created the HANS device did some tests on various helmets, Arai turned out to be the best.
Unfortunately the Arai SA helmets are pricey. Personally I'm looking for a new helmet myself. I was looking at the Bieffe Predator or the Simpson Super Voy-N.
Whatever you do, if you driving in cars use a SA helmet...not an M helmet. The SA's are fireproof. And SNELL ratings usually means they can take multiple impacts.
Lemme tell ya no matter what, the price you pay to save your mellon is worth it, compared to what could happen.

Also, you really really need to try the helmets on- different companies make helmets that fit very differntly- I can't even get a Bell helmet on my head at all- they are just bloody uncomfortable for me, but someone with a slightly different- shaped head would find it much more comfortable.
I recall readign somewhere that helmets are built to conform to a couple of different head shapes.

G Force stuff is pretty good bang for the buck. That helmet you chose is M rated, so if you go to signup for a drivers school or track event, make sure they allow M rated (motorcycle) helmets. For autocross, its fine.

I really can't see buying an open faced helmet... I wouldn't drive on a track with one and you can't race karts with one and if for some reason I do flip or hit a pole at an auto-x I definately want a full face helmet on

I feel the same way. A lot of people like the open face helmets for autocross because they have better vision out of them, or atleast they think they do. I use a Bell M2, which is a full face helmet, but has a large eyeport.

*sigh* The G-Force was out of stock. :(
What other helmets are under $200 and full face? Hopefully it is SA rated, I am not sure on the helmet requirments as of yet for an upcoming event...
Lets put it this way, I dont race all that much... This is my first track day ever, coming up on the 21st. I dont plan on autocrossing if at all. And If I do head to the track it's for 1/4mile stuff and I'm already at the point that I need a helmet for that since I'm in the 13 sec range(track rules). Even then, I go maybe once every other month.
The HJC C-12 looks good, but it's also only M rated. I guess my preference would be a full face. Asthetically, I just dont care for an open face.

Its not the vision but the mouthpiece... It gets damn not around here (100+ constantly) and I get overheated when auto-crossing far to easily as it is :p

I don't think you are going to find an SA Rated full face helmet for under $200. All the ones I sell are $299. G Force would be about the only brand of SA rated helmet close to $200.
As any FYI, I have a slightly used (4 track events) Bell M2, in size large, for sale. You can't even tell its been used. More info and pics here...

cheap agv
1 Attachment(s)
usually the clearance section of the agv.com site is pretty good. granted they are motorcycle helmets but they look cool and lots of motorcycle racers use them. i got a $500 helmet for $50 on clearance. it is an x-vent that is dot and snell M2000. it was $200 just a month ago and eventually worked down in price as the selection in sizes dwindled. lucky my head size wasn't popular. agv and lazer share the site as i guess they are the same company. avoid the lazer helmets as they are not snell certified. some agv helmets aren't snell certified either so read carefully

Who sells the least expensive open and closed face SA2000 compliant helmets? I figure if I try on the most expensive first I am bound to like it and I can't afford to like it right now.

GForce makes about the most inexpensive SA2000 full face helmet, atleast that I know of. Their GF-950 model is around $240. Those are descent helmets, but I would say head protection is not an area where you want to try and save money. A helmet is an investment that will last for several years.

Whatever you do, try the thing on before buying it.
In fact, try a bunch of them on to see what one fits best. I've been through probably six helmets between motorcycles, BMX and cars, and I can tell you, a proper fitting helmet is more important than the cheapest one or the one with the most features.

Every manufacturer will have to have some level of quality control to keep their Snell and the like certification. I appreciate the info and agree that safety equipment is not an area to cut corners.
