topguneagle1 01-19-2007 09:54 PM

HELP!! damn key snapped in half
so i was at a party last night and used my only key to my Impreza as a bottle opener. so the suminabitch broke in half. i can put the bottom part in and the car chimes but theres not enough stalk to turn the car over. tried to get it copied today at a mom and pop place but the copy wouldnt work. this is my only key. would i have to but a new ignition starter kit whatever thingy? can a good lock smith make somekind of copy of the key by using the ignition and not the original key?
tom81 01-19-2007 09:56 PM

Does the copy work if you hole the head of the old key next to the ignition when turning it on?
topguneagle1 01-19-2007 09:57 PM

OH sorry this is an old 00rs so there is no computer recognition chip.
Cooter05WRX 01-19-2007 10:01 PM

i have seen locksmiths take both halfs and make a key that works. just take both pieces and see what they can do.
kpalena 01-19-2007 10:04 PM

sux dude.

I wear a steel ring on my right hand. I use that for opening emergencies. try it.
topguneagle1 01-19-2007 10:05 PM

i did it man. its broken just right so that they cant put it back together. its not broken where the keymarks(?) end and its straight, rather is broken about 2-3 mm before the teeth to the key end so no matter what they do itll be slightly off.
TurboTrey03 01-19-2007 10:35 PM

damn man sorry to hear that...use a table next time!
ddunk12 01-19-2007 10:39 PM

Next time just use another bottle to pop it open works like a charm.

That really sucks though.

Take your owner's card and ID to a Subaru dealer and see if they have the key code on file. If they recorded it when the car was sold to the original owner, they can cut a new key to factory specs.
cr125r 01-19-2007 10:43 PM

bring it too a good welding shop. It could be fixed
topguneagle1 01-19-2007 11:04 PM

think someone could wled it huh?
cr125r 01-19-2007 11:08 PM

yep. Just ask around in your area. someone with a little talent could do it.
SwisSlesS 01-19-2007 11:21 PM

I still have to think that any locksmith/key-making-place with a little talent could make you a working copy. Try somewhere that specializes more. Some times mom and pop can't fix all your problems. :p
cr125r 01-19-2007 11:28 PM

thats a good call. If you go to a reputable locksmith it should work as well. I would use welding as a last resort because it would be most expensive.

i can put the key in but then theres nothing to grab onto to turn it. if i dont need to trun it, directions on hotwiring please!!
epson1 01-20-2007 12:13 AM

if its a cheap key you could possibly solder(sp) it back together so you could get a key made. and that would possibly work.
DoctorNick 01-20-2007 12:19 AM

Go to the dealership with your insurance card, state ID and a few bucks. That should be enough to get a key cut (or ordered). If not, might be time to learn how to hardwire a car or take a ignition stalk from another impreza and wire it in.
topguneagle1 01-20-2007 12:32 AM
That though be enough to get a key cut (or ordered). .
what the hell?......
DoctorNick 01-20-2007 12:34 AM

 Engrish FTW. Sometimes I should look at the monitor while I type.
topguneagle1 01-20-2007 12:37 AM

lol it would help. damn this sucks. any clue how to hotwire this baby?
DoctorNick 01-20-2007 12:40 AM

Can't say here due to forum rules (don't want theifs getting any bright ideas).

Hotwireing isn't all that hard, find someone whom has done a swap into a GC8. They should know exactly what is involved.
topguneagle1 01-20-2007 12:49 AM

how about a pm then?
circaisdashiat 01-20-2007 01:08 AM

haha i went to subaru when ordering my Keys (both for 95 impreza's) and there sould be a 4 digit code on the key you need that number, your vin, and at my delership they looked up my registration to make sure it was my car. If your key doesnt have the code then sometimes they can look it up with the VIN. i would definetly take a trip to the delership
topguneagle1 01-20-2007 01:25 AM

i also heard a mobile locksmith can put something in the ignition thatll read the code.
Uncle Scotty 01-20-2007 06:22 AM

...go to dealer with the VIN and proof of ownership and the dead key.......ask nice parts dept d00000d or d000dette if they pretty please makie-makie new key for you......give couple bux, smile say 'tanks'....and done.

if they no will do....PM SubieGal...she know what ta do for you.

....oh....Bic lighter makes MUCH betta bottle opener than key do ;)
srfrdude21 01-20-2007 11:46 AM

last time I tried a bic, it blew up in my hand........
SwisSlesS 01-20-2007 12:12 PM

Really? I've always wondered if that could happen...
topguneagle1 01-20-2007 12:30 PM

well i took it to another key guy and his "looks" a lot better than the other copy so ill give that a shot today.
WikdRX 01-20-2007 12:59 PM

+1 on just going to the dealer. I work at a Subaru dealer in the parts department and we cut keys from VIN all the time and it will work just like new. Usually pretty cheap too, list is under 10 bucks. Most dealer's should keep plenty of these instock.
Uncle Scotty 01-20-2007 04:40 PM
last time I tried a bic, it blew up in my hand........
...rookie error ;)

...over 25+ years of using a Bic...I NEVER had one assplode.

...never broke a key like that, either
Counterfit 01-20-2007 05:33 PM

The lighter shouldn't explode unless you slam it down. I'd do it more often if I carried a lighter on me.
IIdiceII 01-20-2007 05:37 PM

lighter ftw...actually find it easier than the key chain bottle openers...
SwisSlesS 01-20-2007 05:53 PM

Indeed.
topguneagle1 01-20-2007 07:10 PM

found a better key maker and everything is fixed. thanks gentlemen for your ideas.
