i used rubbing alcohol on the S.. what can i use to get the gooey crap off..??
animosity 06-21-2005 02:03 PM

i used googone on mine worked wonders took a little bit of rubbing but it came right off. its an orange lookin/smelling **** can get it at most auto stores i think
1wrxsw 06-21-2005 02:03 PM

More rubbing alcohol or goof-off, and plenty more elbow grease. I found it to be a PITA to remove the letters. But let me tell you, its ohhh so nice to be shaved ;)
kcook 06-21-2005 02:06 PM

the rubbing alcohol made my S glue spread.. YIKES>. im real paranoid right now
animosity 06-21-2005 02:07 PM

also forgot try warming it up again most of that should just peel right off by rubbin your fingers across it if its warm enough

i used my libary card + hair dryer and i had much less glue left when the letters were off
Godfather Inc 03 06-21-2005 02:07 PM

hhaa man........heat each letter up again then use the googone...mine took 30 min this way and no scratches or extra sticky stuff! you can pm me if u have any other questions.
coldfire22x 06-21-2005 02:08 PM

i think it looks sweet just like that ... j/k :P

what the others said .. heat + goo gone. goo gone is magical
fireball_jones 06-21-2005 02:12 PM

blockbuster card (or similar wallet card) and goo gone. Heat helps, but isn't necessary.

+1.....
thisisbrock 06-21-2005 02:47 PM

heat heat heat! and goo gone. Also make sure you wash and wax when you are done!
bluesiguy 06-21-2005 02:52 PM

hair dryer
iwanbo 06-21-2005 02:54 PM

I put mine so the sun was beating down on it, and I used a hairdryer. Even when getting the left over glue off, use a hairdryer to warm the crap up.
kcook 06-21-2005 03:20 PM

thanks everyone for the tips. i ran out to michaels and got goo gone which helped so much.. wow

do i HAVE to wash and wax??? im going to wash it on friday or thursday

2wheelsx2 06-21-2005 03:24 PM

Definitely wash and wash. Goo-gone, alcohol, turpentine and the like will strip everything down to bare paint. Plus it's hard on your paint.
kcook 06-21-2005 03:29 PM

do i need to use soap??
th1rd3y3 06-21-2005 03:31 PM

I wouldn't leave that crap on my car. I'd at least wash it off, even if it doesn't do anything. Better safe than sorry. I washed and waxed after removing my badges.
kcook 06-21-2005 03:37 PM

i just used water.. will i be fine? my car is 4 days old.. so i didnt wnat to wash it till friday , but its got 400 miles on it
SubaruGenuineParts 06-21-2005 04:01 PM

go to a paint store or auto body shop
and get some REAL adhesive remover

must less work than goo gone

wash and wax afterwards to get rid of the solvent

good luck!

already finished, but thanks for the advice.. i guess?

I still don't think you 'get it' about the wax. Those letters left a haze shaped exactly like themselves in your finish. You may not see it, because it's white, but believe me it's there. You don't have to wax the whole car now if you don't want, just do the back of the trunk. When I was done debadging I was like "uhhh...I can still see where the letters were." But, after a light coat and a quick buff, voila, gone.

Same here. I just used a little carwash stuff with some water, wiped down the back of the trunk, dried it, and waxed it. Took the shadow off.. although at the right angle of light, if you put your nose against the trunk, you could see a very very faint outline. Mine is also an '02 with 47k on the clock though :)
ShiroChanWRX 06-21-2005 04:29 PM

Yeah, use either Stoner's Tarminator or 3M Adhesive Remover (either available at WalMart, etc) and spray it on to the adhesive, liberally, and let work for a minute or so. Many people use a credit card or the like, but I have found that rolling in from the edges helps take the adhesive/foam off in several large pieces without spreading it around.

You'll definitely want to pick up a medium grade polish or swirlmark remover to get the surrounding paint even with the newly exposed paint. It is incredible how much wax and fall-out accumulates around the badging. I like Poorboy's SMR 2.5, but any polish will probably work if you use enough elbow grease.
04RCSTI 06-21-2005 05:02 PM

cooome on, you can take that stuff off easily with a little umph. Our paint is bad, but its not THAT bad...just peel it off...same happened to mine and it came out perfect...
SQC120 06-22-2005 10:46 AM

u can look for some elbrow grease on aisle 14 @ the local walmart near you..
Subie Gal 06-22-2005 10:54 AM

try claying the car - removes all of the left over solvents

maybe that will help with the shadowing?

I used goof-off with a CC and elbow grease on my 04. I ended up scratching my paint. And the goof-off I was rubbing into my trunk ate some of my paint. I'm not gonna debadge my 02 now cause I dont want to ruin my trunk.

You are the only person I have ever heard of screwing this up. Sorry to sound so harsh, but it's true. I would never ever rub a piece of hard plastic on my paint. I know it worked out for alot of you, but if in doubt, you don't need it. I used a rag, my thumb, and alot of patience, and it still took less than 30 minutes from badged to buffed.
BakedCookies 06-22-2005 11:47 AM

i still dont see why you people all make this hard. I took my car to a body shop in 5 minutes they had removed the letters and used a rubber eraser wheel to remove the glue and compounded and buffed out the trunk lid.

Total cost $10

With the help of a friend i debadged my trunk and i could say it looks Great!

I get possitive comments from almost everyone.

The fun part is that when we finished debadging, on my way home, at a traffic light i guy stoped buy and i asked me if my STi was a "Hyundai" :furious: i thought to go and buy the badges to rebadge my trunk but only for a minute :p

PS: Just a few days ago i also color coded the trunk lock . . . :o
suiveam 07-30-2005 10:24 AM

MoJack i prefer the pic with the full debadged trunk

I read this forum last night and was inspired to try this! I just got done removing the "SUBARU." It took me about 30 minutes and it it's perfect. I used the sun, a hairdryer, dental floss and some clear-coat friendly adhesive remover spray. There was no elbow grease involved. I let the sun shine on the letters for a while. Then I heated each one with the hairdryer. Next, I used the dental floss to remove the letters. Then, I heated the leftover glue with the hairdryer again. I rubbed it with my finger, and most of it lifted off. The little bit that didn't came right off with the spray. It couldn't have worked any better. Thank you everybody for the tips!
PS-I'm thinking about re-attaching some of the letters. So far I've come up with "BUS," "BAR," "SUB," "US," "RUB," and my favorite, "USA." Any suggestions?

This is your friend for taking that crap off...

just dab a little on using a towel and then quickly hit the area (when youre done removing the crap) with a lot of soapy water (car was soap) and then dry... make sure to wash the area when youre done hitting it with the solevent. Also, on subie paints i noticed a bad reaction, like the paint is so fragile just a little pressure from the 3M stuff will really mark it up. So after i use that 3M stuff, hit the area with some Hand Glaze to make it look perfect!
AndrewSS 07-30-2005 01:32 PM

here is my FAVORITE glaze for subaru paint, this stuff is by far the most effective on our paints (others such as 3M seem to hard to work with on jap paints)

good luck!
