Help me ditch my RE92's! part 1

Help me ditch my RE92's!
Ok, so I've been reading up in the wheel/tire boards for a while and talking to some friends who autocross. I'm just starting to participate in the STX class and am looking to get myself some more suitable tires. I'm thinking about:

Hankook Z212 235/40R17 XL 94Y DSB

with Rota Slipstream 17x8, 5x100, e48

Does anyone have any experience with this combonation? Any problems or headaches you have run into? I'm planning on using these as a daily driving non-winter set as well as on autocross days.

Good choice ;)

Although working better shaved, the full tread Kook works suprisingly well.

who just drove full tread 212/MX/615 back to back to back and guess what rocked the most ;)

Tom,

I won't have to worry about any rubbing or other oddities with my 03 Sedan will I?

Thanks again,
Shale

48 *should* be ok. I think on Biggly's car he has 45 offset, but I'm not 100% sure.

You should be good to go Shale. What other mods do you have done?
shale2k 08-03-2005 05:41 PM

Right now:

Catback exhaust, Kartboy shifter, AEM Short Ram Intake(going to take it off shortly as I'm not convinced it's helping me out any).

I am in no way ready to compete in any class at this point, I need a lot more seat time, but I have been considering some rims and rubber for a while so I thought I would get some opinions before making some avoidable mistakes!

Defintely, seat time comes before everything else, then tires, then suspension, then tires again, then power.

Un-tuned, the intake is probably hurting you, so wise move there. I would defintely recommend atleast a front-sway bar, and some camber plates to start, or atleast a more aggresive alignment. Along with some seat time, and some good intruction, you will be suprised how much better you and the car will feel.

If I'm reading everything correctly running 235/40 as opposed to 235/45 will mess with my speedo/odo readings. I would like to run these tires/wheels 24/7 during the warm months. Should I be concerned about taking my car to a dealer with those tires? Any insight into how much the speedo/odo would be off?
TheWRX 08-03-2005 06:26 PM
Any insight into how much the speedo/odo would be off?
I didn't look up the specific tire specs, but based on the tire size calculator, your speedo reading would be 1.9% too fast. 235/45-17 would be 1.8% too slow.
tuskenraider 08-03-2005 06:47 PM

You might want to consider some Subzero's as they are about 3 lbs. lighter per wheel, which will help with unsprung weight(a good thing).
shale2k 08-03-2005 06:58 PM

Thanks for all the input! I used a tire calculator and it looks the same to me!
MachinesWRX 08-03-2005 11:00 PM

I would suggest a 225/45 or a 245/40 on those 8 inchers. 235 just seems like the odd man out to me...245 Will fit just fine as my friend has them on his car and barely stick out. good luck!
makofoto 08-03-2005 11:54 PM

which 245/40's would you recommend ...
MachinesWRX 08-04-2005 12:29 AM
which 245/40's would you recommend ...
i would recomend the falken rt-615 245/40 for the type of tire your looking for but id probably just go with the 225/45 from hankook being literally half the price and just as much grip. Unfortunately, hankook doesnt have a 245/40.

So just look around and see what YOU like and want. If you want the 235/40, go right ahead, the speed ratio differences arent much.
I just dont know, i always thought the 235 to be the odd ball size but 10mm is....10mm! ......and usually a teeny more traction. Good luck

Falken doesn't have a RT-615 245/40-17. Only a 245/45-17.
Believe me, I'm drooling over them as i type.
makofoto 08-04-2005 01:22 AM

:p Machine ... the reason I asked YOU is because the tires we are interested in aren't available in 245/40 ... and 245's on 8" wheels aren't necessarily better then 235's on 8" wheels ... 245's often need a 8.5" wheel to gain all of their benefits ... plus Falken 215/615's tend to be over sized ... so a 235/40 615 on 8" wheels might be a "perfect" set-up. We're "all" waiting for the 235/40 615 to be released ...
MachinesWRX 08-04-2005 03:18 PM

Aw dam, i read the wrong size. But i actually meant to say 255/40. Not sure on the overall diameter but i know these fit 8" just fine. 245 on a 8" i would say to be a great fit considering i had a 245/40 on my 8.5" and was stretched somewhat. But the 235 seems primising, go for it!
makofoto 08-04-2005 03:29 PM

wider on less then optimal wheel size is not necessarily better. Here is what National ProSolo Champ Josh Sortor had to say about this issue:

>>>>To add to your point about the mediocre feeling you had on the Neovas. I put 245's on my 8 wide wheels, full tread depth, and thought they felt very vague and slow to transition. These baby's are wide though, nearly as wide as my old KD's. That tells me that if you were running the 225's on a 7 wide wheel, full tread depth, you were probably getting the same feeling as I did. I think the tire, with its softer-than-some sidewall, is extra sensitive rim width. Too narrow of rim + full tread depth = very vague. The 235 is squared up on my 8's and shaved and feel great. If possible, I would not go less than 8 wide on either the 225 or 235, and think the 245 is too wide for our class. The 245's were squared up on 9 wide wheels on Jungs Evo!<<<<

... so tire choice can be influenced by how wide a wheel you are allowed to run in your class.

Where did you get slipstreams in 17x8? The website says they only come in 16.
makofoto 10-04-2005 08:48 PM

Which web site ...

My 17X 8.5's and 8.0' Slipstreams can be bought from SubyDude and America's Tires, aka Discount Tires
i actually meant to say 255/40.
255's aren't legal in STX.
shale2k 10-05-2005 12:20 PM

Update since the thread is still active. I ended up with the slipstreams and hankook's 235/40/17's and I really love them. I'm still too slow, but I'm currently working on the driver now that the tires are sticky!

:D
jcroy66 10-05-2005 12:40 PM

Glad to hear it worked out. I didn't see this thread when it originally came around, but when I read it today, I worried you'd have problems with that offset. So I'm glad to hear otherwise. :)
sliden harder 10-05-2005 01:27 PM

shale2k, autocross can be cool, but have you ever tracked your car before? I'll be doing a track event out at button willow nov 4th, if your interested in doing something like that. by the way that is in southern ca if you didn't know.
shale2k 10-05-2005 04:17 PM

I have considered it, I'm all the way over in Ohio. There are a couple of nearby tracks, but I'm not confident enough in my abilities to track the car yet.
BigClunke 10-05-2005 11:48 PM

You gotta just get out to the track and drive within your ability and you'll be fine. nothing helps like time behind the wheel.

The Subzeroes don't come in 17x8 tho...
burnside 10-07-2005 12:24 AM

Quick question (I think):

Is the consensus to run 225/45 OR 235/40 on a 17x7.5 ET48 wheel?

Application:
02 wagon
rolled fenders
prodrive springs
98% street driven
Falken FK451
17x7.5 ET48
~1.2 F/R camber with driver in car
Butt Dyno 10-07-2005 10:12 AM

I would want the 235's, for the gearing advantage, but I dunno about clearance on the wagon.
burnside 10-07-2005 05:11 PM
I would want the 235's, for the gearing advantage, but I dunno about clearance on the wagon.
I am concerned, though, about running the wider tire on a 7.5" rim (as far as steering response and real contact patch). I don't think clearance should be a problem from the few wagon people I've talked with (the key being that I have rolled the fenders fairly aggressively and should have the space.
