A new and easy DIY part 1

A new and easy DIY
I am pretty sure that i am the first to do this and if i am not i apologize. Everyone says how the third brake light is just "overkill". So i decided to do something creative with it. I turned it into a 'WRX Logo'. Here is what to do. Take out your brake light. All that holds it in are two 10mm bolts and a small round plastic clip (don't forget to unplug the harness). Then proceed to take it apart.

1. Use a flathead screwdriver to stick into the little slot in the back of the brake light and twist to pop the clips. Then slide the top part backwards to remove that piece.

2. Next are two phillips head screws to take out. Then you can slid the red lens and its bracket forward to remove that piece.

3. After that you need to remove the red lens. You should see the black clips holding it in place. Carefully unclip the lens to remove it.

4. Now for this part I used a digi cam to take a pick of the WRX logo on my trunk. If you can't do that, then i suggest going to a website with WRX emblems for sale and saving that pic to your comp. Next use your website pic or digi cam pic in Microsoft paint to adjust the size of your WRX logo (by stretching or skewing to what would fit the lens surface area the best. This is basically trial and error. Printing each adjustment to see which fits the best.

5. Next just cut out the emblem and use double sided tape to stick it to the lens (make sure you put tape all over the back of the logo to prevent edges from bending up and allowing paint to get under).

6. Painting. The painting process takes time and many coats of paint (for me, a good 15 layers) to prevent light from passing through. Before painting, use take to tape around the edge, just enough to cover the clips. This will keep the clips from sticking to the bracket once you put everything back together. Use the same paint as the Konji headlight mod. Also use a sweeping motion (back and forth) to get everything nice and even. Then let dry for a good hour or so (depends on humidity and temp).

7. After dry, test out the lens by putting everything back together, but do not remove the WRX logo. Then just bring the assembly to your trunk and plug it in. Find something to press your brake down and go see if the light shines throught the painted part.

8. If the light shines through then put on a couple more coats and test it again. If everything is good then put your brake light back into place, bolt it in, and now you have a WRX logo brake light  :disco: :disco:

Any questions just write.

not flaming, but Kind of lame...

I dont have a 3rd brake light anyway (sonic yellows all had spoilers and no 3rd light).

Just a couple suggestions.

1. Instead of using tape and paper, you could use vinyl from a sign shop.

2. While you are there you could have them print the logo out and save u the hassle.

3. If you want it less-permanent, you can just put a flat black vinl with "WRX" cut out on the lens, and remove it if you want.

4. If you spray with light tinting paint after your done it would be sweet.... look all black, but whn brake is pressed, a dim WRX would show through... I think if you dont tint, the WRX will not be too visible, and blur into eachother at night.

post pics though, would like to see how you made out.

Handsdown 07-16-2005 05:05 PM

wow, i never thought there'd be a reason to put my third brake light back in the car, but this is really cool!!!!! i think i might even get a vinyl decal to make the masking, that would be even better than having to tape something in place.
Moods 07-16-2005 05:50 PM

I didn't really understand what you were doing at first, but that picture really turned out nice, makes me wonder what it looks like from a distance.

I did this to my wagon quite a while ago. It doesn't say WRX, but I just used some vinyl decal sheet I had sitting around, cut out the word I wanted, and stuck it in.
svek 07-17-2005 04:51 AM

now all i need is a wrx. :(

I second that i did it to put WRX on my TMIC. Worked good, less work to taping it off.

boost_wagon 10-23-2008 08:36 AM

sorry to bring this thread back but can you do this with a bugeye wagon, and need to post new pics
Phreaker 10-23-2008 09:37 AM

Not to flame or anything, but the third brake light really helps the people behind you know when your stopping, especially when you drive with DRT's on.

I tinted my tail lights in my 03 sedan, did not run with DRT's on. But now I see how much of a pain it was for the people behind me to see wtf was going on with my car.

That's just my opinion.
