HELP! My trunk won't open! part 1

Matth3w 01-12-2007 10:16 PM

HELP! My trunk won't open!
I have a Seibon CF trunk, which has had no problems thus far. Yesterday before I left on leave, I put my tool box and some other things in the trunk, no problem. About 10 minutes into my drive I went to get a rag out of the trunk to wipe off my windshield and the trunk wouldn't open. I pulled the latch, but when I pulled it it pulled and felt as though the trunk was already open (no thunk)...but it wasn't. Has anyone experienced this or something similar and what was the problem? It feels almost as if the trunk release cable is messed up.

maybe you flicked the switch in the trunk that disables that little switch

he probably did.

it happened to me before, and I thought my latch was broken. So I opened the trunk with my key and noticed a switch. After that, everything was good.

Right, but I have a Seibon CF trunk. It has no keyhole, and as far as I know - no safety lever thing that is on the stock trunk (I know about the lever). I could be wrong about the lever if someone knows for sure if it does or doesn't that would be great.

im in the same situation
my trunk wont open!
badtaste 01-13-2007 07:17 AM

do you have that center section acess from the back seats? find a small child if ya do, if not im gonna have to say your kinda ****ed
scooby888 01-13-2007 09:48 AM

It really does sound like the lever. Just take out your back seats (which is about a 10 minute operation providing you have the right tools- just a socket wrench), have a small child climb in and try to open it that way. The latch must still be there even though the keyhole isn't, otherwise how would your trunk stay shut?
distorto 01-13-2007 10:15 AM

or find something long to reach it from the backseat, i used a wooden dow to unlock mine.
badtaste 01-13-2007 02:00 PM

perfect job for the trunk moneky!
nhmtns 01-13-2007 02:03 PM

Damn, I was thinking you might have sent this message from your phone because you were stuck in the trunk.

Too true a trunk monkey would be perfect.
circaisdashiat 01-13-2007 02:07 PM

defenatly take your back seats out and crawl into your trunk and unlatch it with your finger, look for the lever on the right side of the trunk lock, i belive it should be pushed down to enable the pull lever from the inside.
Subaruski 01-13-2007 02:45 PM

happend to me once when i didnt have my sub box bolted down. you hav to climb in the trunk and mess with the lock
Matth3w 01-13-2007 02:51 PM

right but does the CF trunk have the same safety lock?>
Subaruski 01-13-2007 03:19 PM
right but does the CF trunk have the same safety lock?>
No the latch is probably jamed. You will need a flash light and you will have to mess around with it for a bit. Its probably broke cause something in your trunk hit it.
4wdrift 01-13-2007 06:11 PM

You have to adjust the position of the latch mechanism or tap it to flatten it
out a bit (off of the trunk mind you). It bolts right in and close just fine but
thats when you get caught! Sometimes they just don't come out of the moulds
quite right.
4wdrift 01-13-2007 06:13 PM

Oh, and make sure you chek it from inside the trunk with a flashlight. Have a
budd pull the lever while you observe the latch to make sure it is good to go.

can you explain this a bit more in detail, i am not picturing in my mind what you are trying to convey.

so if it is broke, i am thinking i probably shouldnt fix it being away from home.
4wdrift 01-13-2007 10:22 PM

Okay...
I'm reffering to the actual latching mechanism that attatches to the trunk.
You had to bolt this onto the new trunk when you swapped them. If it's not
in the correct position, it will not open properly.

You should also know though that from time to time, the cable can get
stretched for whatever reason. Make sure that you do not have a bunch of
play in it.

thats right, i remember now that I swapped the latch. how would you tighten the cable if that was the case?
silver-RS 01-14-2007 12:22 PM

^^^ i need to know how to tighten up the cable too
mine is loose and the trunk release wont open up the trunk anymore

Bingo....

You got me on that one though. I never had the issue of my cable stretching
out (yet  ). I know some others just had it replaced under warranty.
Make sure that is your problem first though.
4wdrift 01-14-2007 12:41 PM

Maybe you can take a quick look at the cable on the pulling end (in the car)
and see if it has some means of adjustability. Perhaps an adjustable clamp.
I could hardly imagine that the engineering specs are so precise that every
one fits perfect from the factory.
madmanmlh 01-14-2007 09:24 PM

im still a newbie, but can you take the handle by the drivers seat off and give the cable a good tug to see if its just a tension problem?

otherwise find a small child to crawl through the pass-through and have them release it from inside :-)
silver-RS 01-14-2007 09:27 PM

actually i couldnt figure out how to take the handle off on the driver side...
there're two screws..took them off...the cover is still stuck in there...
Magnum626 01-17-2007 01:58 AM

I remember when this happened to me. I pulled down the pass through, reached in with my head and shoulder and a ratchet to reach the latch.....

I then popped the trunk open but got my head and shoulders stuck in the trunk!!! ROFLMAO.

After the anxiety wore off I got back out. I now double check the latch everytime before I close the trunk. I never installed the emergency latch. If you can't figure out how to get out of the trunk without the latch then you deserve to be trapped in there. :)

I also have a small ratchet set I keep in the car instead of the trunk now. I unbolt my seats instead of getting my big head stuck in there again. ;)

I Had The Same Problem With The Latch, But When I Read The Post I Ran Out There And Flipped The Little Metal Switch Thingy And I Works Like New:)
alfabc 02-06-2013 02:16 PM

Thanks for the advice to look at the switch! Mine trunk release hasn't work for almost a year, and I finally got tired of it and look here. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers,

Bill

I was having the same problem, but a quick fix is to open the trunk, look where the cable is and fish it out. I took a heavy duty zip tie and added it just behind the stop. it pushes up against the latch and opens wonderfully.
