Total cost of project $11.00 and about 20 minutes
Currently on or with the car:
Rota Downshifts w/ Hankook RS2's
Stock Rims w/ Yokohama YS420's
Spoiler
Damaged hood replaced with WRX hood
Eibach Prokit springs------Not yet on car
WRX factory sideskirts ------Not yet on car
Next, Money is getting put away for a V7 Swap-- Then I am probably going to get some Ohlin's and a cage.
-Ultimately my goal is to have a 2002 WRX STI, with the nicer black and grey RS interior.

It is actually a rubber polymer trim that is flexible enough to be bent without losing shape. They come in rolls in the garage and hinge sections.
No, I never owned a honda, I've just been a college student for the past 3 years... dick.

you used to be, and currently still are, a douche. Go to a track sometime, you would be suprised at how many competative cars are running things like this.
But hey, far be it from you to actually go out and learn something. Because after all, if it doesnt come from a big name company, it cant possibly work right? That lip is blocking some air from getting under the car, which WILL help the stability at speed. But hey you already knew that, oh wait, you didnt.

Home Despot has a lot of good stuff if you have the imagination to use it. Another option for a bigger lip is the sill they sell for the bottom of the garage door.
It doesn't have to be expensive to be good.
PS: Paint the scoop flat black...

So what is the main reason you installed it? Is it for looks, to protect the bottom of your bumper cover, or for aerodynamics? It doesn't seem like it would alter aerodynamics at the speeds they affect car stability, that is if its really soft.

I did it because I am lowering the car, and I think the fronts of the bugeyes need a little lengthening. I doubt it will aid much on the autox course, but on the highway It feels a little more dug in. (not much though)

got any pics of the fiberglass ?
I'm guessing that little home depot lip would be a great base to lay down some nice resin and make a decent lip !

| tonzo | 08-22-2007 02:23 AM |
i dont think it looks tacky or cheap. There are so many outlandish lips out there. I think using the Home Depot lip creates a very conservative look. Plus it works with any bumper. Finding a lip that you like on your car can be tough/expensive. Call me cheap all you want but I think it looks fine if done right.

anyone try coating in fiberglass resin to stiffen it up.... then painting ?
might be a good, cheap alternative....
besides, they really don't make any decent lips for the 98 2.5rs front bumper...

Tacky and cheap ? Looks pretty good to me. What looks tacky to me is spending tons on a lip that has a million holes and needs paint, modification to make fit, etc...
Cheap, for sure but that's half of why we tinker with these cars - to say it with me now : Do It Yourself.
In college money is tight so you learn to make results on less cash. To that end if the lip cuts undercar turbulence major kudos to the OP for making everyone with a "real " lip look silly and having enough to register for the track event to boot!
And as a side note. I know several people with "real lips / splitters" that refuse to auto-X because they are afraid of damaging their car - so much for "functional aero" in those cases ! Rock on OP...

Wow, I thought this thread was dead a long time ago. It's been months and it still looks good (or cheap, depending on how big of a self-absorbed ricer/douchebag you are--At least mine isn't primer colored...) I will post up pictures of the car after I get my driver's side mirror replacement (danced a little too close to a tall cone).
Regardless, I would take me 11.00 lip over anything that would cause me to grit my teeth when pulling into a parking space (been there, done that, this is way better)

its a lip intended for another vehicle that has been altered with fiberglass to fit. hopefully i will have one molded through one of the companies my friend owns...i think we all deserve a lip that doesnt cost a arm and leg and doesnt require sti side side corner splitters. dont you agree?

Looks good, but folding at speed could be a problem. Does any one know what the WRC cars actually use for their lips? I've been keeping my eyes peeled for some heavy duty rubber L molding but no success yet.

Some of us live in places with real winter weather where a lip can get easily destroyed. But besides that, I can think of so many other things to put my 200 dollars toward, such as a new suspension. can you say agx? I'll take a home depot lip over half of those ugly things you call lips.
