Horrible F1 Qualifying Broadcast
I cannot stand what has happened to Speedvision!! The broadcast team is just crap, could he say mechanical gremlins one more time? I think it is because he doesn't know any other terminology, I could not bare to listen to him anymore and I am going to listen to an Internet broadcast for sound. Why did he have to interupt the interviews to tell me that Ralf was talking, I thought that it was pretty obvious since I could see his mouth moving. Since I am on a tirade let me also add this, "Do they have to air the stinkin Daytona 500 every freaking day!!!!" I hate this broadcast from commentary to screen graphics. I just fired off a huge email through the feedback portion of their website and I advise everyone else to also. We have to fight this they are ruining F1 for me.

I hate the new guy too! I miss Sam Posey. I never thought I'd say that as I used to hate him back in the day when he commentated for Indy cars. He was annoying back then. I loved his F1 broadcasts though. At least they still have David Hobbs.

The new Speed channel sucks!!!
Somebody else needs to come out with an all racing channel!!!

Does anyone remember when ESPN 'covered' F1? You never knew when the next race was going to be shown (it was never live), Bob Varsha really couldn't tell one team from another, and they never ever showed any of the post-race anything. It was literally flag to flag programming starting at the green and ending with the checkered. And even ESPN's coverage was light years beyond ABC's Wild World of Sports (early 70's) where they would show the Monaco Grand Prix (their ONE race of the year) a week later, in between coverage of weightlifting and bowling- no kidding. And even that was better than having to wait two or three weeks to READ about what happened in Road & Track.
I truely miss Sam Posey (and wish him well). I really do, but I also know we could be stuck with a lot worse people. Can you imagine what it would be like if we had Derek Daly? How long could we stand him interrupting everyone else, reminding us that he too drove an F1 car once (100 years ago), and his inevitable "Pressure Cooker" comments? Oh, the humanity.
Yes, 'at least' we have David Hobbes. Our Crown Jewel. I'll never forget the time he and Varsha were covering a race and I swear it seemed like Hobbes was either drunk or really hung over. Now those were the days.
There really isn't much to complain about with Steve Benetton Machette. There's no denying he knows his stuff. But sometimes he seems a bit quiet.
Sure the new guy (still don't know his name) stuck his foot in his mouth big time by talking over the press conference, and I wanted to kill him then, but this was just qualifying for the first race. Give'em some time. At least he's attentive, enthusiastic, knows one team from another- and most importantly, not Derek Daly.
Can I suggest switching to decaf? ;)

Sir Frank, I humbly agree with you on this one. The "new guy" was pretty bad, but this was his second broadcast (Friday practice being the first). Matchette really does have a lot if insight, and was surprisingly quiet last night. however, did you catch his comments about the front rain tires, camber, etc. that was quite good.
let's remember: While Tony George has filled up his oval stadium the past two years for the USGP, in reality there are very few real F1 fans in the US. In fact, there are very few real WRC fans in the US.
The new guy's rookie ignorance notwithstanding, I am thrilled that I can watch F1 practice, qualifying and races live.
BTW: I travel to Asia frequently and have watched several F1 races from over there on Rupert Murdoch's StarTV satellite. They show the same feed that our announcers get. Of course, I can't understand a thing that the Chinese announcers are saying, so I tune them out and just listen to the sound of the engines. For those who don't like the announcers, I say: don't listen to them, just listen to those wonderful engine sounds!

I too miss Sam Posey. Yes, SpeedChannel does suck for F1 coverage. That new guy is aweful. Why should we settle for less, as compared to NASCAR. I mean F1 is the largest, most popular motorsport in the world. Why is F1 coverage so aweful in the US. It could be much better, along with the US fan base, if sombody would get their stuff straight. Also, another complaint. Who wouldn't like to see more classic (70's - 80's) coverage of F1. NASCAR classic and new is plastered everywhere. I am sending a complaint to SPEEDCHANNEL to get their stuff straight, or they are gone for me. We (f1 and WRC viewers) were heard by SPEEDCHANNEL before, when we felt threatened to the loss of F1 and WRC. So let's take action..Rob "GQ"

I'm not writing deBruhl off yet either. He needs to get used to the styles of the other two and get used to F1. I don't think he has a deep knowledge of F1 but at least he seems to have done his homework.
It could be worse, by all accounts Jenkins/Cheever/Priestly were terrible last year. One year ESPN had Chris Economacki call F1 races, that was truley horrifying. An in any case we are still getting much better coverage on SV than was ever possible on ABC/ESPN.

It was bad, really bad!!!
I will make it clear that I'm glad we still get to watch F1; however, I can't stand how the new commentator interrupted the interviews twice, and finally cut it off (while Ralph was still talking) and sent us to watch commercials (I can't imagine Hobbs' face while this is happening). I do miss last year's commentator pannel.
I'm also extremely sick of this new format. Every single time I turn on Speed Channel there is some Nascar race or show going on. How much of the same crap can you watch?. Even if I were a Nascar fan, I'd be bored as heck watching the same thing all day long. Hell, I'd even get bored if they showed F1 all day.
Speed Channel has lost what made Speedvision so atrractive to me. The fact that Speedvision had a wide variety of sports is what made me watch so much of it. I thought I'd never say this, I miss Ship Shape TV.
Because of this new Speed Channel crap, I'm now discovering other channels that I did not know they existed. For example, I watched the DIY Channel and realized they had two really good shows, "Building a Kit Car" and "Radio Controlled Hobbies".
I just hope that the DIY Channel doesn't change its format and start showing "Building a Nascar Kit Car" and "RC Nascar Hobbies".
Cheers,
Marco

The fact speedvision still seems to go from actual broadcast to infomercials is quite annoying. Perhaps those lawnmower commercials will have stopped by now.

I don't know the new guy, but like Sato, this new commentator has a lot to learn about the refined elegance that is formula1.
It could be worse. ABC could have gotten the F1 rights.

Heheh
I agree to most everyone's comments..
In regards to running NASCAR reruns over and over again, I think that is still better than running infomercials or airplane/boat maintenance shows.
However I DID submit this idea to speedtv.com : In the same vein as rerunning classic NASCAR races, why not rerun classes Formula 1 races?
My reasoning is that I only started following Formula 1 last season. I would LOVE to see the older reason w/ Senna and Hill and such. I would also LOVE to see the 80's races when turbochargers were still legal!
whaddaya think?

I think your idea is wonderful for the exact reasons you mentioned. However, if the big-wigs at Speedchannel agree with us is a different story. Now that Speedchannel and NASFART are in bed with each other I bet the rights to old loop-de-loop races are dirt cheap, whereas F1 is proabaly quite expensive thanks to Bernie Eccelstone.

Yes the constant rerunning of NASCAR race is just a waste. I hate it. I wouldn't mind if they actually had some ggod NASCAR coverage.

Rick DeBruhl is new. Give him time. The fact of the matter is that we were getting the SAME pictures we always get, from the world feed, and the commentary from Hobbs and Matchett was as always, excellent and informative. DeBruhl will learn where he needs to fit in. He will also learn terminology, etc, that will make him better. Just so you all know, it's HARD working off those world feeds. I remember talking to Bob Varsha at the USGP, and he was saying that calling a race where you in fact are is much, much easier.
Watching the qualifying, I knew that a thread like this would arise, so I'm not surprised that it's here. I AM surprised that people aren't giving the guy a chance, and are waiting and ready to lambast Speed Channel at the first available opportunity.
Speed Channel, and NASCAR, are here to stay. Get over it. As far as the clamor for ANOTHER motorsports channel, be logical. What would they show? Speed Channel has the rights to everything. Further, who would the announcers be? Possibly, someone worse? DeBruhl and Derek Daly, to me, are a wash.
At the end of the day, it's live F1 qualifying just like we always got, and like people were pissing and moaning about probably not getting because "Speed Channel was going to be all NASCAR."
Now pardon me, I have to go watch a tape of that same-day WRC coverage that Speed Channel shows, so I'm too thrilled to hate. But I can repeat...give them time.

Well, like many have said, at least we are getting the coverage. It just kinda sucks when the commentary isn't up to our high standards.:p However it will get better with a little time.
I do have a big complaint about the whole Fox/Speed Channel/NASCAR thing going on over there. I KNOW that there has got to be more racing to show then the freakin NASCAR race from Daytona circa 1999. I'm not kidding you when I tell you that it has been on like 10 times this last week. And who really cares about Daytona 3 years ago? Show it once or twice and then pick something else to show!!
Don't get me started!
Another thing I can't stand is FOX's monopoly on NASCAR coverage! You can't even see any race footage on RPM 2Night on ESPN. Not that I'm looking for it, but come on!! They aren't even allowing ESPN to show short clips of it during their news show? They did this to Speedvision News last year before the buy-out also. What a bunch of stingy losers. They may as well digitally cover up car sponsor stickers because they aren't getting payed by the sponsors!! (Oh wait, they already got caught doing that last year...whooops!)
NASCAR really needs to wake up and apply some pressure to FOX, because how can more coverage, ala ESPN's RPM 2Night be a bad thing?
Okay, I'm done for now.
Mike

My wife, who watches the racing with me, raises an interesting point about last year's announcing crew. She likened their style to a cocktail party group, talking about the race. It was very inside, and either you were part of the group, or you weren't.
DeBruhl is a more traditional announcer, that is, he talks about the race, and defers (though not quite enough) to the tech and color folks, Matchett and Hobbs.

I guess we're all part of the group
Since we're all complaining... I remember when ESPN had Jackie Stewart as the color commentator... that was educational...
Hey! What's this I hear about ABC buying the rights to the Canadian and US GPs? I think that is good news... More viewers = bigger audience = better network next year and/or better announcers, perhaps.
Plus more kids see F1 here in the states, take up kart-racing, and then become F1 World Champions! (Hey, a guy can dream, can't he?)

I'm sorry but this guy just stinks, either you can broadcast F1 or you can't... I don't think that you can learn this. Broadcasting is a natural talent and this guy doesn't haveit. I hate to say it but I don't like any american motorsports announcers. Why can't we have the same announcers as in Britain once you here them call a race you will trully realize what you are missing. Geeeeeezzz,
The only problem I had was that on the interview section was that the audio and video where out of phase.
It was like look at a badly dubbed HOng Kong action movie.
But other than that everything was okay and the small problem's they had between the commentators.
Should work themselves out with a little time. Has for the repeat's they been showing the last couple of week's.
Remeber there's been nothing for them to show added to the fact of the re- start of the channel it's self.
So give them so time FOR THE LOVE A GOD!!!!
Right now I'm watching the GRAND AM race from Homestead then it's F1 tonight.
Next week it's the Tour de Corse and the CART race from Monterrey Mexico then there's all the Daytona Bike Week stuff coming.
Speed Channel is also adding the CORR off road series and they just said on their website that they will carry the World of Outlaws (the Hardest Working Guy's in Racing) too.
So please people have a LITTLE FAITH!!!! Everything is going to be okay. :)

But Cigar, "I don't like it so change it NOW" is the American way.
Seriously, it's easy to forget, amid the increased NASCAR coverage, that Speed Channel gives wheeled racing fans most of what Speedvision did, and more. Bob Varsha was terrible when he started doing races, and got very good. I don't think that DeBruhl is terrible. I do think that he's different from what people are used to, and that might be as big a problem as any of his shortcomings as an announcer.
I would bet that Speed Channel wanted an announcer who wouldn't be so inside, so that other people could perhaps be drawn into the broadcasts, hence some of his "gee whiz" commentary. It's something that would indeed trouble the cognoscenti, but if it gets more fans for F1, so that the ratings can go from infinitesimal to tiny, I'm all for it.

its a business, think about costs
I would submit that the reason they run NASCAR classic races is that the cost per hour of viewing is much lower, and they have access to 10 times more footage of NASCAR than all other racing combined.
Think about it, they have 35 -40 years of vidio from a series that ran a race every week from spring to fall every year.
During the same time period ABC wide world of sports may have covered a half dozen races of all types in europe. Monoco Grand prix, Le Manns during the late '60s when Ford was active, and a few other premier races that had some American connection.
I'm sure the producers would love to have 24 hours of race broadcasting that does not repeat, but are severly handicaped by what it would cost to get rights to all these races.
As far as the question "how much of that crap can you watch"
Hmmmmm I don't know about you, but if it is a repeat of something I've already seen I use the remote button and change to another channel. It's not like they don't replay the same motorcycle race several times. I think I have tuned in to see segments of the Dakar rally a half a dozen times now. I think some of you are experiencing selective memory here, they are re-running everything.
So far today, they have shown 2 hours of NASCAR ( qualification for Las Vegas), 2 hours of FIA drag racing from europe, and I'm currently watch Live coverage of the Rolex series at Homestead, and this evening there will be 5 hours of coverage of F1. Seems to be a pretty balanced brograming split to me.

Vote with your remote
By the way the best way to influence speed channel is to vote with your remote. The folks at Direct TV know what you are viewing and the folks at Speed channel care about what you are viewing because that is what drives their advertizing rates.
If you want to see more WRC coverage, be sure your tuned in to WRC coverage everytime it comes on, even if you won't be home.
Also send e-mails to vendors that advertize on the series you like and let them know you noticed the support the type of racing you watch.
It is the advertizers that actually determine what is shown. If no one is willing to pay for advertizing time because they don't see any return on the investment, the show will not be run unless they need a filler to kill time in the broadcast schedule.

Oh yeah, "Lap Of The Gods"... extremely cool stuff. Between the old tracks that you haven't seen for a while or have been altered, and the drivers that have retired, and the changes in the cars, the show is fantastic to watch!
As for Speed Channel... I appreciate the same-day coverage of the WRC, and the F1 coverage. Obviously they are going to have some teething pains, but I trust that all will be well in the world eventually. I'm actually watching the Grand-Am race as well, and enjoying the coverage.
I grew up following NASCAR, and in general enjoy it and root for certain drivers. I've actually been to a couple of races. However , even as a 'fan' (of all motorsports), I must say that they are showing too much. At least mix it up a little, please. The Daytona 500 is not the only race they run, ya know? I guess if that's what it takes to generate advertising cash-flow to make the network profitable, then so be it. I just worry that even the die-hard NASCAR fans will grow weary of it and wander off.
Rich

I guess if that's what it takes to generate advertising cash-flow to make the network profitable, then so be it. I just worry that even the die-hard NASCAR fans will grow weary of it and wander off.

You guys need a knowledgable brit (i seem to recall saying this for the WRC coverage too :D) ;)
Give the guy a chance, at least till the end of this w/end. If after that the comentators stink give me a call.
There wasnt exactly a lot to talk about in qualifying either, it was a bit dull to say the least!

My vote is for we get SPEEDCHANNEL to hire johnfelstead to take care of our WRC and F1 coverage. Between John and Steve Matchet I think we would have the commentary we all want.

Ohh man. The 30Min Pre-game show says it all.
Good lord. "Fans at home dont care if its a drafting pass(nascar) or a real pass" Exsqueeze me?
Since when do we talk about winston cup racing during the f1 pregame show?
And 20 seconds to windser actually at the race?
EDIT: OK, OK . Looks like we have a second "pre-game" show.
I'll shut up for a bit :)

Re: Vote with your remote

If you want to see more WRC coverage, be sure your tuned in to WRC coverage everytime it comes on, even if you won't be home.
Also send e-mails to vendors that advertize on the series you like and let them know you noticed the support the type of racing you watch.
It is the advertizers that actually determine what is shown. If no one is willing to pay for advertizing time because they don't see any return on the investment, the show will not be run unless they need a filler to kill time in the broadcast schedule.

Actually, if you don't have a Nielsen box (for cable folks...I'm not sure how the DirecTV linkup works), nobody knows WHAT you're watching. There's no way to register it. This is a flaw of the Nielsen rating system...you have to have a box (or diary) to have your vote count, so it could be argued that nobody really knows how popular a show is. A show could be wildly popular, but if none of the folks that love it have boxes...
You're only partly right about advertisers determining what is shown. Network ad people sell blocks of time, and more "desirable" shows are sold at a more expensive rate. The reverse is also true. This explains some of the ads you see on some Speed Channel shows. It also explains why I was happy to see a greater variety of ads during Rally Sweden. It means that they can sell it, however cheaply.
A show that isn't watched can still be shown, and still get ads for the above reason. Witness the first season of hour-long WRC programs. Subaru was a sponsor, and the Subaru ads were hot and heavy. The newer advertisers now are a good thing, because that means the shows aren't so heavily sponsored that they'd be in danger of being shown if the principal sponsor backs out.
Speed Channel's subcriber base is still small enough where individual comments are seen by someone. But know that you get more with a carrot than with a stick. Rather than writing to say "You suck. Show less NASCAR," something like "Your continued committment to WRC and F1 programming is wonderful, and will keep me a happy subscriber."
You can then either a) know that by your lack of mention of NASCAR, the message will be clear, or you could add something like, "In my household however, a more favorable prime-time programming balance, between NASCAR and other series, would work better for me." Subtle and to the point.
Hope this all helps,
Kevin

Well, I must say, the new guy (Rick DeBruhl?) is a little high strung, isn't he? Poor ol' David Hobbs can't even get a word in edge-wise can he?
I certainly hope they have some reviews and learn some lessons from the telecast. I still have faith that everything will work out fine, they just need some time to gel together and make some 'style' adjustments.

Awww, I really feel sorry for you people with Speedvision. Anyone know where I could watch/download a rebroadcast? Morpheus or do I need to get specific?

I turned off the sound. Worked much better with my friends calling the race.
Did anyone else notice the fact that the announcers seemed unable to mention once what lap the race was on?!?
At least it's not as bad as CART coverage.

You know, all this F1 elitist talk and NASCAR bashing is about as productive as pissing into the wind. And the bashing boardering on becoming "racist". Tone it down, the "redneck", "backwards assed comments are getting old.
Your mad that NASCAR gets more/better coverage than F1 in the U.S.? Do you even know how the world works? It's all about MONEY. In the U.S., F1 fans are a minority, for every 1 F1 fan there are probably 50,000 NASCAR fans...this is something you must accept. Advertisers pay to put their products in front of a large audience...if more people are watching NASCAR programming than F1, more advertisers will PAY to put their ads on during that broadcast...the more often NASCAR is on, the more often Speedchannel can SELL those advertisement spaces!
You guys should be glad F1 is covered at all...the more often it (or WRC, or Touring Car) is on, the more potential viewers will see it and possibly become fans. Do you really think that Speedchannel would devote equal time to F1, WRC and NASCAR when the fan base in the U.S. could (and will) not currently support it? Can the coverage improve...sure it could, and if the fan base grows it will. Does it deserve that great, extensive coverage now...well that would depend on who you ask...but as a business decision, it wouldn't be a "sound" decision.
richeich made the smartest comment I have read here:
As for Speed Channel... I appreciate the same-day coverage of the WRC, and the F1 coverage. Obviously they are going to have some teething pains, but I trust that all will be well in the world eventually. I'm actually watching the Grand-Am race as well, and enjoying the coverage.
This thread doesn't benefit from another long-winded diatribe, from whatever viewpoint... sort of a waste of bandwidth...
Everyone agrees on one thing, the coverage can be improved... the disagreement is about communicating the disappointment to the broadcaster...

Just because thats the way things are, doesnt mean I have to like it. I think NASCAR has way to much exposure, it's already on about 5 channels and yet they need more.
And when did Redneck become a bad word?

Its simple
Rupert Murdoch=News Corp=Fox(which paid $$$1.5 Billion give or take for nascar rights)=Speed Channel=Why nascar is shown all the damn time.
$$$ Makes the world go round. Sucks as it may.
Buy the video game and do your own commentary whiners

In light of ABC broadcasting 4 GP's, as well as Speed Channel carrying the other 13 races live, and broadcasting tape delayed coverage of all 17... here are the places to complain, if you feel you can advise them how to improve:
Speed Channel = Speed Channel Feedback Page or []
ABC Sports = Questions or comments regarding ABC Sports or []
I'd recommend trying the web page forms first, instead of the e-mail addresses... unless your diatribe doesn't fit inside their forms... in which case you might want to re-think yur diatribe anyways, so it is easier for them to read and understand.

If you desire change in speedvision then write them a letter. Tell them what has changed and why you don't like it. You are the audience and if you quite watching then they don't money. I think we all like the way speedvision use to be. It seems that one of the main reasons are coverage and announcers. Announcers must have knowledge that goes back years. That is why you always see john madden. (He knows his sh__). Tell them that if enough people complain they will change. More veiwers=more money. Speak your mind. I think I have said the same things way to many times so I will shut up. Take it easy.

I already fired off emails to both ABC and Seed Channel and now have also sent letters as well through snail mail. I will let you people know if I get a reply.
