how to paint calipers?

Sup guys, just wondering....... how hard is it to paint calipers. I heard one could just take off the wheel, foil the around the caliper and roll it on. There are two types i heardm the spray and the roll, how much is paint worth and is there anyone selling them here? Please help!

Hey! You're in luck. Painting your calipers can be a VERY inexpensive mod.

I don't know if you have a Pep Boys auto parts store, but they carry the spray cans of Brake Caliper Paint (in blue, yellow, red, black, maybe others) for about $6.00.

To actually do it, you ideally would have jackstands to have all the wheels off at one time, but you CAN do it one at a time if you want to. Be sure to clean the calipers VERY well. Get all the brake dust off and rinse all the cleaning product off. Use something to scrub in all the little nooks and crannies. Then apply a light first coat. Let it dry completely and then apply 2 or 3 more coats (drying between coats) until you are satisfied with the texture and color.

You can use aluminum foil to mask but I used masking tape. Either way would be fine i think just really be careful not to spray your disks or other parts that you don't want to be red, cause the paint will be VERY hard to get off.

So do you leave the caliiper on the the disk when you paint it? Does anyone have pics of the process?
nqwan 12-09-2001 11:24 AM

you can leave it on and mask off the areas you dont want painted if you want to. or you can take it apart and paint only the parts you want colored to make sure you dont get paint on anything else

this topic has been covered a lot so a search may get ya the answers your looking for if nobody posts em here
Imprezafan1 12-10-2001 02:31 AM

yes!

Hahaha! I can and will do it. Cheap paint rite? Just clean the caliper good while is on the dis rite? I can paint it while leaving it on the disc as long as its covered good? Thank you guys! Do they sell the role on kind? thanks a million everybody! PLease send me pics of Rs or Subies with red painted calipers!

imprezafan - make sure you buy something labeled "Brake Caliper Paint" that is the cheapest paint you'll find that will work well for caliper painting.

You can also buy a nice brake caliper painting kit made by Foliatec, but it's very expensive.
Subie Gal 12-10-2001 10:47 AM

foliatec is brush on...
no need to remove the calipers...
dont even need to mask stuff off...
just mix and brush on!
yes it's expensive... but i've never seen anything like it!
it will last you a long, loooong time...

it's THICK and you'll have plenty left over to use as needed!

totally recommend it!
i got mine by phoning: www.ultraperformance.com

To add to what has already been mentioned:

do a test run with some Rustoleum or something, that way if you don't like it a) it only cost~$5 for the can b) it is much easier to remove than the Folia Tec kits.

Another tip if you use spray paint - spray it into a plastic cup or something then brush/dab it on. I did it, and it worked very well. Oh, if you do this make sure you are FAR AWAY from the car when you spray it into the cup. The paint has this way of finding your car if it can.

I painted mine, yes I know it is not the look every one wants...but I like it so... :p

foliatec

I second the reccomendation for the Foliatec caliper paint. I have used it on three different cars with great results! It is a two part epoxy paint, so it is VERY durable. You just brush it on so there is no need to mask anything off or risk getting overspray on your car. This stuff goes on really thick and would be hard to accidentally chip (I've had the stuff on my Alfa for 2 years and it looks beautiful). It's kinda expensive, but definitely worth it compared to other cheap spray-on caliper paints.... besides, you get enough of it to paint at least 4-5 sets of brakes (I've painted 3 cars and still have quite a bit left)

add to your color options by using engine block paint or high temp paint from you local parts store.
mitch808 12-10-2001 09:07 PM

I've done a few sets of calipers on various cars and when in highschool and living off of bank of mom, the engine paint was my 1st choice.

Engine paint is thin and needs a few coats to look good. On top of that, the red looks a little orange. It is not a glossy paint, more a flat color

FoliaTec is GREAT STUFF!!!! no complaints. thick, glossy, and durable. Not that regular paint isn't.
jblaine 12-10-2001 10:12 PM

So, those of you with painted calipers: Do you clean yours when you do your rims or do you not bother? What tools do you use for the job? Just reach in there with a toothbrush?

And for those of you already replying to this and if you've used the Foliatec kit: How much does it cost (general)?
jhonas 12-10-2001 10:27 PM

I haven't used or bought foliatec, but I think it's around $40, maybe a little more. When I get around to deciding to paint my calipers, I'll probably go with foliatec.

One question though, when you're painting your calipers, do you paint the front and back, or just the front? I guess it'd be personal preference, but what do most people do?
Subie Gal 12-10-2001 11:47 PM

* foliatec cost is approx $40-50

* it lasts FOREVER .....
erm... *cough* unless you play off road a lot *cough*

* i suppose "most" tend to just paint the front....
it's a matter of preference...

* i clean my rims with soapy water/rag - no tools/brushes.

have fun

I've always painted the front & back calipers.

I believe I paid $45 for the Foliatec kit from Ultraperformace (link posted above).

I have a seperate wash mit I use just for wheels & tires, so when I clean the wheels I just reach through the spokes and clean the calipers too. P21S wheels cleaner works really well for cleaning the wheels & calipers, and it wont hurt the paint on your wheels.

My question was rather vague...

It should read: Do most people paint the front and back (both sides) of the caliper?
DubbleURX 12-11-2001 12:55 AM

Was just thinking this today and bam a post for me :D

I was also wondering if anyone actually just took the wheels off and sparay painted after masking off the unwanted areas of how do you get the backside of the calip cuz i dont know but just the outside viewing area was painted it would look cheesy??

Umm thats about it for now. I think the red calipers would look sweet on my black car and maybe do the red front emblem to while im at it!

Thanks
Danny

Same exact thing for me, although this is being read after I did the calipers, used the pepboys stuff....decent job......I think it wasn't soo hard, I left them in place and just covered the rotor and surrounding parts...I also painted my sway bar and badge....all red....the badge is backlit, so lets see how far I can get without being hassled...

VHT--Good Value...

Don't worry about painting the back unless you were going to show your car on jackstands and even then you never really see the backside of the calipers. The paint that is sold at PepBoys is made by VHT and is very good for the cost. Not really glossy but you can get a can of clear as well...

For all of you guys that didn't use the FoliaTech stuff, what did you clean your calipers with before painting? I think the FoliaTech kit comes with cleaner?

What about the G2 Caliper Paint that Larry sells? Is it any good?

Preparation...

I scuffed up the surface of the calipers and/or drums/rotor's hub with a metal brush and wiped them clean with Acetone and blasted them with a little compressed air before painting them...

Zee:cool:
ATX25RS 12-11-2001 01:27 PM

wd-40 also rinses off the grime and brake dust....just give it some time to dry, because it might repel the paint..

Andres
02 T-WREX 12-11-2001 02:57 PM

cleaning before painting

Before I paint a caliper I always scuff up the surface with some medium grit sandpaper (it doesnt matter if it looks scuffed up, the foliatec paint is thick enough to fill all the little scratches). Then I use the brake cleaner that comes with the foliatec kit. After my foliatec brake cleaner ran out (waaay before the paint was gone) I started to use non-clorinated Brakleen, and it works just as well (smells worse!)

I don't usually paint the backsides of the calipers, but I reach around and get the sides & top. It really doesn't matter because noone will be able to see back there with the wheels on anyway.

While we are here and after seeing the pic of the driled rotors does anyone know if one can go to a bigger rotor with the stock calipers or is it just as big as it is now?

How much for the x-drilled?
How much for x-drilled and slotted?

What brake pads do ya get for street driving and occasional track events?

Damn need rotors and some painted calipers..

AndrewWRX 12-11-2001 08:34 PM

Folia Tec all the way

My roomate has had her calipers on her BMW done with it for over 2 years with many AutoX & track events and the stuff is glossy and shiny when brake dust is wiped off. You can run your finger over the caliper and the blue paint is shiny like day 1.

I've seen the spray paint stuff after some track events and it gets dark and looks dirty. Do it once and do it right.

Here's my Black WRX with anthracite wheels and painted calipers.

I used Rustoleum

I used satin black Rustoleum on a brush with the calipers on. No problems so far and I just wipe off the calipers when when I clean the rims at wash time.
Likewise, I also used Rustoleum aluminum paint with a brush and steady hand on the rotor hubs after they started to rust. This I did with the wheels on!
