How to remove black roof strips to install a Euro Roof Rack

Tools you will need:
thin flathead screwdriver at least 2-3" long, covered in electrical tape to protect paint.
#2 Philip's screwdriver
Towel
Before starting:
The black roof strip is held on to the car with 4 or 5 sliding, black clips as well as a yellow "insert the plastic pin" fastener. You will need to look down at and underneath the black strip to see where the sliding clips are. If you are not tall enough to do that, you will need to get a step stool to make it easier.
Here's a picture of what I mean when I say to look underneath the balck strip:

STEP 1
********************
Starting from the front, driver's side of the car, use the flathead screw driver to slide the first clip towards the back of the car (see the black clip attached to the rail in the next 2 pictures). You will actually insert the screwdriver under the black strip, and into the side of the black clip; Then slide the clip towards the back of the car about 2 inches. Doing this will release the clip from the little metal "nail head" built into the roof.
The below picture shows a view underneath the black strip with one of the slide clips released (slid backwards). This is what you want to do with all the clips.

Next, pry up the yellow clip using the flathead scrwedriver. This clip is located at the very front of the black strip, near the top of the windshield. You will now have the front 6" of the rail released from the car.
This picture shows the yellow clip, the black sliding clip attached to the black stripl, and also notice the rivet head on the roof that the black clip latches to.

Step 2
********************
Using the same method, slide the rest of the black clips backwards to release them. Doing so will allow you to lift the black strip out of the groove in the roof and set it aside on top of the car. All of these steps should be done with very little force. Rest the black strip on the roof using a towel to protect your paint.
Picture of the black strip moved out of the way so I can install the roof rack brackets. I didn't use a towel but you should ;) .

The rest of the install is simple. Install the 4 brackets just like it says on the picture on the bracket with the screws. Replace the rails in the reverse of how you removed them.

Here are some pics of triimming the rubber pieces that came with the rack:

I also taped up the ends to ensure they wouldn't fall out and also to give a sleeker appearance. Surprisingly, the tape has held up to 6 snow trips.
Hey Gharari,
I was checking out your installation thread, great information btw. I had one question. Once you get the weather-stripping off, there is a black bracket with one hole to which you mount your rack foot. In your picture, it almost looks like the slide the foot clip under this bracket, and then use two sheet-metal screws to fasten bracket to car hood. Is this right?
I'm asking because I'm in the market for a roof rack, and the factory mounting option is most attractive. I will not, however, drill new holes in my car.
Let me know exactly how that clip mounts onto the bracket, and I'll give you a nabisco cyber-cookie!
Thanks a bunch,
John
no drilling necessary. There are black brackets already on the roof especially for the roof rack. Each of the 4 brackets that come with the rack is made of two pieces which allow them to clamp to the bracket on the roof. The screws you see are very short and do not extend into the roof.
This is hands down your best option for a roof rack. You won't be sorry if you purchase it. I had a yakima rack too, so I know first hand. Good luck.

Does anyone know if this roof rack will fit on a WRX Wagon (with the stock/factory rack removed)? i.e. do I have the same brackets under my weather stripping as the sedans which have installed this rack have?
Thanks!

Just take a look... they're visible if you look in the rain gutter, even with the stripping in place.

I just installed this. Works great. It was a bit of a pain to install with just one person in the pitch dark night. I guess I should have waited for dawn, but I couldn't wait! Anyway, thanks for the write-up. Bought it from Cheams Subaru in the UK. Arrived 5 business days later. Total cost was around $290 or so.

What pieces did you order? How much would the mount feet alone run me? Do they fit an STi???

This is the "carrier base" and is only available that way. You cannot, nor would you want to, buy just the feet. IT comes with the "feet" and the crossbars. It does fit an sti. Even an '06, which I am proud to say that I now own. :) :) :)
Edit: I haven't tried mounting it yet, but it looks like the brackets are there on the top of the roof.

I would call Cheams Subaru and see if you can just order the feet and the bracket things (the things that attach to the car). Maybe they will give you a deal.

I'd imagine shipping those cross bars is a big part of the cost equation

Yeah, never hurts to ask.

Shipping especially. Without, the box would have been a lot smaller. But shipping weight would not be effected that much. They are light.

I bought mine from Cheam (great service) as well... installation was a breeze... i took my time so it took a little over an hour but it looks great... great writeup though i broke one of the clips on my first go around... costed me about 350 with sedan cargo tray (keeps trunk dry from wet snowboots)... its a must for snow sports... +12.50 for importing duties from ups... shipping took about a week from england to los angeles... fyi this will work on sti as well... i checked my friends 04 sti roof and it had the same mounting clips

can you use the Yakima PowderHound on this rack setup? (i can get it locally far cheaper than through here)....but i like the fact that this is a clean installation, that doesnt use those universal towers (i hate them)
if it'll fit, i'd just as soon order their basic kit (includes the mounting feet and crossbars only, right?)

I'm in the process of trying this. I put the PowerHound over the roof of the car and it takes up about 3/4 of it where they mount to the bars. I don't think it'll be a problem with this setup. Hopefully, I'll have it done this weekend, but don't cross your fingers. :)

I ordered the EDM rack and it received today, actually :)
If its helps the crossbars are square, not the round ones. I believe this would be better to fit Yakima accessories.

aha! had it backwards, thanks for clearing that up.
+1 for the EDM load carrier, though. Painless install, works and looks great. Only whistles a little bit, and I'm working on that now.
Plus, ordering from Jim Childs from Cheam Subaru in the UK was a pleasure.

The Thule fairing does not work right with the EDM rack because the rack sits too high. I've tried it. I was going to use the Thule brackets and make my own fairing but never got around to it. That project is still sitting in the garage from 4 years ago ;)
I can backup Shane (Paranoid Fabrications) about Thule=square and Yakima=round.
Maybe I am remembering wrong, but I THINK that the Thule ski rack that I have came with adapters for use with round bars. I wonder if the Yakimas come with adapters for square bars???

Thanks for the replies.
After a little research, certain Yakima products work with round or square cross bars.
This is the bike rack I'm looking at - http://yakima.com/racks/bike-racks/product/8002091/highroller.aspx
And this is the snowboard rack - http://yakima.com/racks/ski-rack/product/8003068/fatcat-6.aspx
"Universal mounting hardware fits round, square and most factory crossbars right out of the box"
As for the fairings, I figured the high profile of the Subaru cross bars would cause a problem. Oh well, Not too concerned. I could probably find a way.

Bringing this sucker back. Thanks for the guide.
The fitment seems pretty good. I was able to retrofit my OLD Yakima fairing and now I'm just waiting to pick up my old Yakima trays/Lockjaw to see if it'll work. I ordered it from Jim Childs at Cheam Motors - he was a pleasure to deal with. It would be nice if US dealerships were as courteous as Cheam's was.

Can anybody post pictures of the rack feet up close, if possible, both while off the car and mounted?
I'd like to build my own rack using these mount points, and I'm curious to see how these EDM/JDM racks attach to the clips.
In this picture:
It looks like the feet go down under the black strip, in addition to the point where they connect to the installed clips. Is that correct?
Thanks!

Holy crap, Dave. I was just thinking this weekend about how cool it was that I had one of only a few real roof racks for an STI in this country.
They were also optional in Japan, and given the better exchange rate with Japan vs. the UK, I'd try places like Rallispec instead.

Hello,
I came across this page because I had been considering selling my Mont Blanc roof bars. I took them off the car just last week and took some pictures while doing so. Here's the link to some of the pictures which shows how the clamps and feet go together.

I have the load carrier I ordered from Jim at Cheam back in 03 for my old bugeye; it's been stored in the garage for a few years, so have to check to see that it's all intact, but i should probably put it up on the classifieds. I even ordered spare retaining clips for the roof moulding.
Let me know if you want pics.

I found that using a butter knife wrapped in electrical tape worked best for me lol.....and I just wanted to say thanks for this thread. Dealer was going to charge me $600 to remove roof rails/antenna and put them back on after I had someone wrap the roof in gloss black. I really needed the antenna removed for a clean install. So I removed rails/antenna and put everything back on myself - antenna was a bitch but putting it all back together was a breeze. The roof rails literally took 5 minutes to remove!! Best part was paying myself $600 lol!!!

Do u have a how-to on the antenna removal.... Thanx

will this work without bending the clips and just latching them as is? and it would be done with q78 clips.

I'm with you man I REALLY need this. I'm going camping in about a month and more space is critical.

restored photos. hope this is still helpful.
