Imagine this: I had enough money to turn my car into a Lightweight Auto-x Racecar
I have this fun dream that constantly pops into my head... Thought I might want to share it for fun  (I mean, everyone has these kind of car dreams dont they?)
Anyway, tryed my first auto-x couple weeks ago, loved it, and really liked how my car handled it minus the lack of power exiting corners and crappy generic tires... Managed to come in second in HS though and improved my times by over 3 seconds from race 1 to 5 :)
I keep thinking how I could turn my car into a full-fledged all-out auto-x car like alot of the civics, old-school vettes and mustangs, etc. that are out there, but in the Impreza sort of way of course (Dont give me any of that "Impreza's cant compair" crap, thats not the point of this, its just a dream!).
So, Ive kinda compiled a little list of what I COULD possibly do with the primary goal being to get my car down to close to 2000lbs or BELLOW if possible, and getting to handle as best as could I possibly could using availible aftermarket parts n' DIY weight saving and other techniques gatherable on I-club or in subie land... Nothing like creating a new engine or tranny's or anything like that...
Of course more power is good, but a turbo, supercharger, or nos = MORE WEIGHT and thus N/A with a 2.5 sounds the best route especially since ive heard the 2.5 is VERY close to the same weight as my 1.8l.
Ok, so:
Weight Savings Interior/Exterior - Gut the interior totally (ala Gary sheehans race car), REALLY light seats if possible (which ones are THE lightest minus carbon fiber custom-molded kind), get rid of all the sound deading material (we had a post about this in another forum turns out there is 100lbs of the stuff on the car!), lightweight front and rear bumpers, toss the mudflaps  and maybe some of the other plastic pieces around the front and inside fender wells maybe?, lightweight battery, remove spare n' jack n' stuff, lightweight steering wheel w/out airbag, (any more ideas im missing?)
Chasis stiffness - CF front and rear strut bars (for weight savings again), Maybe a V-brace? (too heavy?), NO rollcage!, maybe a titanium harness bar?, STi tranny and engine mounts, Cusco front and rear undercarage braces, maybe some of those back-seat braces? (anything else?)
Suspension - Coilovers whichever are the lightest and most race-capable I presume (Does DMS have some heavily-tuned racing spec coilovers?), whiteline endlinks n' swaybar mounts, Maybe whitline front/rear swaybars, Cusco pillow ball top mounts or is it not adjustable enough?, aluminum control arms w/ better bushings, eurathane bushings all around (is that the cusco package?), MRT front and rear control links and trailing arms (any other brand thats better?), would the ALK work ok or too funky for race-spec style tuning stuff?, What am I missing here?
Wheels/tires - No clue :p How bout Hoosier race tires on some 16x7.5 sub-10lbs rims?
Drivetrain/engine - Cobb tuned N/A 2.5 shortblock, Cobb intake (to retain the torque), Titanium custom made 2.5" back exhaust including headers and like maybe 1 freeflow cat :p, Cusco exhaust hangers, N1 pullies, ProECM chip or would a Full-fledged engine control system be the ticket?, STi shortshifer with linkage (I need the linkage BADLY right now actually!), Kartboy shift knob of course to save weight!, lightweight radiator if it exists, Lightweight flywheel + clutch (best brand/combo?), CF driveshaft, How about some sort of Dogbox tranny with Kaz or quaffe front, rear and center diff's (I dont think that would actually ADD much weight now would it?), and anyone elses ideas for N/A engine tuning would be neat too!
Brakes - Dont know, but nothing major... Maybe some 4 pot fronts w/ 2 pots rear and some lightweight rotors and steel brakelines n' quality brake pads n' stuff... REMOVE this ABS though to save the weight + better control of braking!
Um, Style! - For looks, I thought I would just repaint it say rally blue and get rid of the foglights, get a CF hood (maybe the Rally style one with the extra-large vents?), CF trunk with a nice n' light spoiler that actually creates downforce, some morrette headlights IF they actually save weight over stockers, retain my current bumper and maybe stick that front lip Accurit found overseats (although that = weight), and some sideskirts too I guess (more weight)
*************
Well, thats all I can think of... This is fun though! Anyone have $10k to spare so I can do some of this?
All thoughts are apreciated! Especially if anyone thinks It would actually be possible to get under 2000lbs like this and if I could actually have a quality auto-x or even a decent track car with this!

K... there is more
windows replaced with plexiglass
Windshield wiper system and fluid removed.
Someone makes CF body panels (22b kit)
Lots of NVH weights that you can strip out
Remove power windows and mirrors.
Remove sunroof and weld panel shut
Acid dip non CF panels
remove fuel tank and replce with fuel cell.

Ya, forgot about the plexiglass :p
The fluid for the wiper would go for sure, but I think the wipers could stay since they would be usefull for rained in events.
I remember seeing that CF kit awhile back... never materialized though.
I have manual windows already, and no sunroof :) So a roofvent would be good.
My fuel tank is only 12 gallons... although a lightweight one would be advantageous but arent those fuel cells like VERY expensive?

That is a lot of stuff to do to your car and I think the question you will need to research is What class will I be running?" Sounds like to my little knowledge of the modified classes that you will be in one of those and I am not sure what competition you will be up against. My guess is it could be really tough.
Saying that let me through this idea out, you could upgrade the car to the edge of stock class, new shock, exhaust, struts, sway bar and throw some r compounds on the stock rims. This will probably make you quite competitive in H stock and will probably be just as much fun.

I didnt really care too much about "winning" as opposed to just making a freakin awesome car  And this car of course would seemingly be great for some track use as well... But Im not a big fan of racing on the same course at the same time with other folks (I prefere me vs. my car vs. the track and thats it), but thats just a personal preference...
I was just looking at some of the classes, and OSP or SM2 would probably be where this car would go minus some of the bodywork and there would be a weight limit of 2100lbs :( I wonder if there is some sort of "unlimited" class, or a AWD unlimited class... I can only find info on SCCA stuff about stock prepared/touring/stock classes though. (my local autocross which uses mostly SCCA rules has like a bunch of classes I dont recognize from the SCCA classes)
BTW, I saw Trey from Cobb talking about getting his N/A RS up to 280hp retaining the torque and low-end in the N/A forum... That would be perfect for this car!

yah... if you actually did everything listed here, your car would probably end up in a very tough class (not sm) that it would be utterly uncompetitive with. You'd most like end up racing formula fords and the like.

Scrape off all the underbody coating - Subaru coats everything under there, I bet there's 50+ pounds of crap you could scrape off. It would certainly be a huge PITA to do, though.
Forget the wing, unless it's HUGE. At auto-x speeds it takes a really big wing to be effective. I can't even think of any auto-x prepped cars at any event I've been to that had a wing. I'm thinking of all the Modified and Prepared cars that push the limits of the rules, and they don't have wings - I'm thinkin' there's a good reason for that, it just isn't worth the effort.
Oh, it was Josh, not Trey, who was talking about a 280hp n/a 2.5L - some serious dough is gonna be required to get there.
Some Tarmac-spec DMS 50s would be sweet, but they're heavy. If you're concerned about weight there are companies that make aluminum coil-overs that would come in lighter.
Lexan windows.

Put in a 2wd transmission and lose the center and rear diffs, driveshafts and rear stubaxles.
Rolling resistance will be better too.
Put on small light calipers and rotors - RS calipers are too big and heavy.
My estimate for these parts is 120 to 180#

You do of course realize that there are plenty of rules you need to observe in the SCCA handbook to ensure you don't do something that's going to stick you into a run group where you get OOwned right? ;)

The whole point though is to have an ultra-light AWD car though :p (and I HATE FWD  )

Not that much money??!! The Stage 2 shortblock is $4500, plus another $4000 for the Stage 3 heads and the cams. Add at least another $1000 for a custom intake setup using individual throttle bodies, $2000 for the TEC II (or whatever) that you'll need to control all this, some more $$$ for larger injectors, fuel pump, and fuel rails, a few hundred for all the gaskets and seals, and then of course assembly. "Not that much money" is going to cost over $12k in the end.
Randy Zimmer - What's the story on that crossmember? I'm assuming that's a custom tubular setup? I've never seen anything like that on a Subie. How much weight did it save? It must be pretty stout, since it appears to be on your rally car. Very interesting...

In E-Prepared your minimun weight is determined by the engine displacement. So running a 2.5L will require you to weight about 2600 lbs. Running a 2.2 liter puts you at a little under 2300 lbs IIRC. You are also limited to 7" wide rims.
Add a Cusco Tarmac center diff, 65% to the rear 35% to the front.
Ditch the wipers and motors all together... that's what rain-x is for. If rain-x can't get rid of all the water fast enough, then they should call the event because visibility would be down to about 3 feet. ;)
Get an aluminum circle track seat. Reasonably comfortable, light, and CHEAP.
Screw lightweight bumper beams, get rid of them all together. All you need is something that'll hold the bumper cover on. I bet that can be done with less than 2lbs of metal.
As much as you are dreaming, you should think about reading the rules, it'll help you narrow your search for parts.
Good luck

Screw lightweight bumper beams, get rid of them all together. All you need is something that'll hold the bumper cover on. I bet that can be done with less than 2lbs of metal.
As much as you are dreaming, you should think about reading the rules, it'll help you narrow your search for parts.
Good luck

Not that much money??!! "Not that much money" is going to cost over $12k in the end.

My car cost 5k... If we start to get in the 100k range, then thats way to far, but $12k just for the engine is fine since im DREAMING HERE! :P
If i wanted to go cheap, I could do alot for just $5k... 2.5 engine, gut the car, take out all the sound deadening crap, stick in DMS 50mm's and throw some race tires on some cheap 16x7.5 sub-14lbs rims.
The point of this exercise is to see what the best stuff is out there and get it on the car while keeping it a N/A AWD Lightweight Impreza...
Randy: Got any more info on that part other than just a dirty picture thats hard to figure out whats been replaced? :p
Travis: The rule is that I get to race at an Autocross and have fun. Doesnt even have to be SCCA. Class is irrelevant...
Wheres the info on the Cusco diff's? That makes 3 sets ive heard of now... (Kaz, Quaffe, and Cusco) Wonder which one is the best?

See, I couldn't do that. I'm waaaay to competitive to just "have fun". I might be able to do that for a few races, but then I would look at the other times and realize that I'm getting creamed in E-Mod and I either had to spend more money on the car to make it faster (forced induction), or add things back to the car to make it legal for a slower class.
But since we're dreaming here what you should do is strip the car down to 2000 lbs. then put a SupraTT 6 cyl in the back seat running the back wheels through a custom transaxle. With a single turbo conversion you can make 400-450 hp easy. I think that's a pretty reasonable power-to-weight ratio  You'd better get some pretty wide tires though, let's say 16x12. At this point you might reconsider your option to forgo a full roll cage. ;)

Kosta,
If you are going to do that much to the car, put a cage in there, get your license and come out and join us at the next USTCC race!

*cry* I cant even afford to get some used WRX rims and tires let alone any of this :( :( :( Thats why its all just a big fantasy!
Travis: Im competitive, and I kinda got more interested in what to do with my car for auto-x when I raced at my first auto-x and beat some cars I shouldnt have beat and realized how little it would take to get me competitive... But that would be an entirely different post :p Im more interested with the light-AWD aspect for this (which as ive noticed, alot can be done without spending much of any money, but these extra goodies could make the car crazy-light which would be neat to see how well it would do, no?)

The easy thing to do would be to buy a 00-01 2.5RS or Legacy that took a shot to the trunk and totaled it out.
Then buy a Old subaru hatch, 3dr or sedan. Put said drivetrain into the old car and get something that atleast STARTS around 2K lbs. I think the 4wd hatch is just over 2K lbs stock. The EJ-25 drivetrain will add about 50-100 lbs
Why I say this is I very much doubt that you could get a Impreza TO 2K lbs much less below that. Even the early STi V1 Type-RA is 1170KG and it has little in the way of toys like the later cars. To have any real chance at this I think you would need to acid dip the body, then rollcage it. Run CF doors, hood, trunk, fenders, etc. The entire wiring harness would need to be tossed in the trash and a minimal setup custom made. Etc Etc Etc.

Well if I cant get that low in weight, thats fine... But there are a couple cars around here down to the 2300's with just the bumper beams, racing seats, and lightweight flywheels/clutch's (MPREZYA's was in that range for awhile til he turboed it) so with a striped interior, CF hood + trunklid, removal of sound deadening material, and a few other things I can easily see the 2100's being very possible.... stuff like plexiglass windows and CF body panels will surely get the car under 2000lbs!
