Is anyone using the TireTail to haul tires? part 1

BIGSKYWRX 11-27-2003 12:05 PM

Is anyone using the TireTail to haul tires?
Went to their website and don't so our application(s) listed. There is a form to fill out for a custom one, but alas I don't have a hitch to take measurements.

http://www.tiretail.com/

I emailed them letting them know I was interested and that maybe a few others would be as well.

I see that DaLan makes a hitch for the WRX sedan (I've read this is actually the manufacturer for SOA's one?).

I'm delving into SM this year (also will be running R's for track days) and now need a way to haul tires/wheels.

This looks like a pretty easy way to do it.

Thanks

The guys in the picture is a good friend of mine who autocrosses here locally. I have a Draw-Tite hitch for my car. Here is one for a 02 WRX.

If you need me too. I will see Shawn this Sunday and talk to him. What do you want me to ask him? I have seen this used on several cars. Even a S2000.

The guy w/ the Miata? Is he the guy that makes them? There is a sheet/order form that asks for several measurements-unfortunately w/o a hitch installed I can't get. If you've got a hitch installed alreay, maybe they can get the measurements they need off of your car? Is this a product you would have interest in?

It looks like the ticket to me. I've got plenty of room in my trunk for tools, jack, air etc. Also the full back seat for luggage, so having this would negate any need for me to get a trailor, worry about lighting, licensing, insuring, spare tire for it, etc.

Thanks

Myself, I am looking at inclosed trailer. I want to have some that I can secure all my tools, jacket, jacket stands, wheels, tires, etc is a sealed box. Like if the weather get back. I don't have to worry about putting them in the car. I have a friend who is thinking about selling me a slightly used one. All ready to go. All I need is to install the harness, plus here in OK. We don't have to have tags for them if it's not a commerical trailer.

I will get with Shawn. As a bunch of us are getting together to watch the SSB Run Off race replay on Speed. I will bring it up with him. He's not the direct person who builds them put he works with the guy. His was the first.

Enclosed trailer would be very nice. If you could let them know that would be great.

Thanks

Well he came over to my place Saturday and he has one that already works. So get with him and he will set you up. He said it would being after the first of the year before they will be ready for shipping.

Hey guys, Sean with TireTail here. Thanks to Pat for the use of his car and hitch setup to get some good measurements. I am fabbing up an initial supply of Subie TireTails that should be available by late January. I will be adding the Impezza and WRX DaLan Hitches to the TireTail website soon. With DaLan's new pricing structure, the retail for the hitch is $142.00, TireTail will sell them for $113.95 plus shipping. Let me know if you need any other info.

Zoom on!
BIGSKYWRX 12-16-2003 10:12 PM

Sean,

Sounds good! I think this is a great idea for anyone not wanting to hassle w/ a small trailer. I have to travel a fair piece to autox and even a fairer piece to track- this will be perfect. Got plenty of room in the trunk for tools, air, etc.

Leaves my back seat open for luggage etc.

I bought a small trailer from www.harborfreight.com Cost was $189 with the 12" wheels. Actually there are HF stores in most cities. I picked up mine and brought it home in the WRX.
But, I put a piece of wood across it and then bolted on a lockable tool box to store my easily picked up by accident tools by other people. The tires fit in the front part and the box is at the rear. It tows very easily and I have made a 1300 mile round trip with it loaded w/o any bearing problems or break downs. (pack the wheel bearings very well with grease when assembling)

I also have a http://www.interstatewest.com/4ft.html 4x6 enclosed trailer that I pull with the WRX. But its for my camping trips mostly. Way to much room in the trailer for AutoX stuff and gas mileage drops to 15-18 mpg pulling it. the small Harbor Freight trailer is the way to go.

Cheers,

I have a subaru trailer hitch and the instructions state that the tounge weight should not exceed 200lbs. Im not sure if that has to do with the strength of the hitch in the vertical direction or if it has to do with how the vehicle will handle... But anyway, it seems that 4 tires mounted far enough away to clear the bumper might exceed that. Again, Im not sure on how they came up with that limit; but the tiretail website says "200 lbs or better", so be careful.
BIGSKYWRX 12-17-2003 10:20 PM

Four mounted tire/wheels ~ 150lbs, that shouldn't be too much of a burden for the hitch, the Miata setup has been working fine- the WRX setup should be at least as beefy as that.

While a trailer has some advantages, ie room- not pulling a trailer (and licensing it) has it's advantages too.

Well after many moons of trying to figure out whcih hitch ahd the most clearance for aftermarket mufflers - I opted for the oem hich as it appeared to have the largest arch. It clears my ScoobySport fine w/ ~ 1" to spare.

I got Sean to send me a "tail"- it had to be cut and drilled as Sean didn't have the oem one at his shop (he does have the da lan and drawtite, in hindisght the da lan probably would have worked fine).

It's a very sturdy, well made piece- allows full access to your trunk as well.

holds four 245's no problem:

No licensing, no flats and I can get from point A to B and back to A (which for me is a long, long way) much quicker and easier:D

Sweet deal brotha!!! I think I may actually break down and get a hitch put on the wagon for this summer. I need a trailer to haul my shizzz...
AustinTexas 04-25-2004 12:38 PM

I have a tire tail for sale! De Lan hitch, only used once! shoot me a PM if interested.. .

Anyways it works great on the STi, even with APS's 3.5" exhaust! Very easy to load and unload.
Warp3 04-25-2004 09:11 PM

Has anyone who runs a TireTail or hitch-mount cargo rack ever had an issue with the fact that the license plate is obscured? I'm just wondering if you've had cops complain about being unable to see the plate (as I know many states are quite particular about anything that blocks the license plate (like tinted covers)).

I have talk to Sean who owns the company today at a local autocross and he runs one all the time when he goes to SoloII events and track days at Hallet. He said he had gotten pulled over once. Not for the Tire Tail but for speeding and then he ask the OHP office who pulled him over about it and he had no problem with it.
BIGSKYWRX 04-25-2004 11:48 PM

I think the fact that's it's "temporary", like hauling a Christmas tree strapped across the trunk (we'll not exactly like that;) )

Is it just me, or does your tiretail sway? I thought it would be more stiff than it is. Also, one of the pins broke that holds the tires on (luckily have cable lock going through it as my own insurance).

Anyone else notice this?
trojan9x 07-27-2004 08:32 PM

no one still using one?
BIGSKYWRX 07-27-2004 11:18 PM

I never got to use mine, burnt the exhaust valves in my 02 sedan and have sinece traded in on 04 wagon. I'll be competing in STX this year and sold my 245/45/16's that were to go on the tire tail. I'm hanging onto it to rallyx tires/wheels.

I know there was a couple of guys using it w/ their STi's for track days. Didn't hear any neg feedback from them.

I know on mine it was an extremely tight fit into the reciever hitch- so tight I had to grind off the powder coating to get it inot the hitch (oem hitch).

Is yours loose in the hitch?

afpdl 07-28-2004 01:51 AM

Ive never used mine on the street, as it wont fit my current tires. But I mounted them up just to see how it did and I could tell it would be bouncing quite a bit on the freeway. With out much pressure I could get it to move up and down quite a bit, there is alot of weight on that hitch when you put 150 lbs that far away from it.
trojan9x 07-29-2004 02:15 PM

I had to grind that coating off too to fit it in (Draw-tite hitch). Was just wondering if the sway was ok or not. I don't have anyone else's to compare it to.

I would rather have the Drawtite over the Delarn as the Delarn would start too sag with mine. It's mainly do to the part that goes over the exhaust is not tubing like the Drawtite and would flex and bend and now come back. I wish I had never sold my Drawtite.
I got a tire trailer now so I don't use my TireTail anymore. I might sell it.
dntouch 02-22-2008 09:47 AM

This is alot of tongue wieght on that small of a hitch. (obviously its not tongue wieght but its the best description). Most recievers with a 1-1/4" only have a rated tongue wieght of 200lbs. , this is a "rated" capacity but 4 wheels / tires and the unit itself must be damn close to that if not over.

This seems like a great idea for tire transport but the small Harbor Frieght trailer has been tried and used for years by alot of people.

I dont know what the laws for every state are reguarding trailer registration but here in Wi. we dont need to register a trailer that small. So the trailer for me is an easier sell. Plus it allows me to take -all- the wieght out of the car and throw it on to a trailer.
OldBastardSubaru 02-22-2008 12:19 PM

I've heard about people using the harbor trailer but that takes up extra space as well as having to register it in CA

No registration in OK for non commerical trailers FTW.

I seemed to remember a few Miata folk getting ticketed in CA for something or another specifically regarding the Tire Tail, otherwise a great setup.

Cause you couldn't see the licence plate. Photo copy and put in the back window.
Plus I would call bs with any cop. You ever seen those baskets on the back of SUVs that use the hitch. When loaded, they cover the plate too but I don't see them getting tickets.
