Rallye Argentina Preview

Once again, the FIA World Rally Championship leaves Europe behind for another round of the 2006 season. This time, the sixth round of the year will be held in Argentina, and the Rallye Argentina promises to be an exciting event for many drivers and teams.

Argentina is the second 'true' gravel event of the year, and this could not be a better time to have a gravel rally for the BP-Ford World Rally Team and the Subaru World Rally Team. Both Marcus Gronholm and Petter Solberg were unable to contest Kronos Total Citroen World Rally Team ace and reigning world champion Sebastien Loeb on the previous two tarmac events and Loeb has jumped to a commanding lead in the drivers' standings as a result.

If Sebastien Loeb has vulnerability, it's the Xsara's gravel performance. Loeb captured victory in Mexico earlier this year, but the Frenchman did not dominate the rally as he had done in the following two asphalt events in Spain and Corsica. The gravel stages in Argentina, much like in Mexico, will work to level the playing field for the drivers hoping to find the results to capture points from the champion. Loeb has won the rally only once - during the dominating and record breaking 2005 season. Though he might find greater challenge from Marcus Gronholm, Sebastien Loeb is still the clear favourite to win the rally this year.

Marcus Gronholm has also won the event only once, in 2003. We can expect Gronholm to compete for the win here. After familiarising himself with the Focus RS WRC on gravel earlier this year, Gronholm will have better confidence going into Argentina. The true goal for the Ford team will be closing in on Kronos Total Citroen for the manufacturers' race. The Citroen team sits in an uncomfortable lead at the moment by a slim three points. Mikko Hirvonen will be a key player for this task. A podium finish might still be just out of reach for the Finn, but he has driven well here in the past. Hirvonen finished the event in 11th in 2003 and fourth overall in 2004. He did miss the 2005 event - so he might hold off on the early start until his feel and confidence returns.

Petter Solberg and Chris Atkinson desperately need a solid performance in Argentina if they have any hope of fighting for any title this season. After the Spanish and Corsican tarmac stages, the duo has fallen further behind in both championships. Solberg currently holds the fifth overall position in the drivers' championship behind Manfred Stohl, Dani Sordo, Gronholm and Loeb. The return to gravel means a renewed confidence and this could translate to a better finish. The Impreza has made a reputation for being a gravel oriented World Rally Car, and the return to gravel marks an opportunity for the Subaru squad to turn their earlier season around. The season is yet halfway complete, so never count out any competitor, especially a former world champion.

The OMV-Peugeot Norway World Rally Team returns to full force when the team heads to South America. Henning Solberg will again join Manfred Stohl and allow the team to compete for manufacturers' points. In Mexico, the duo captured the third and fifth result and went into Spain with great momentum. Solberg, of course, did not compete in either of the two post-Mexican events, and Stohl was left to fight for drivers' points alone. After an accident during testing prior to Spain, Stohl never quite found his tarmac form on either of the two sealed surface rallies.

The OMV duo has found some strength in the 307 this season, and it was quite exciting to watch them work on the Mexican gravel earlier in the year. The early result was no fluke, but it did help that Marcus Gronholm, Mikko Hirvonen, and several other drivers experienced problems early in the event which allowed for the OMV drivers to steadily move up the leaderboard. Stohl will be driving for more than the manufacturers' points in Argentina. He currently holds fourth position in the drivers' standings above Henning's younger brother Petter by three points. Expect a solid point finish for both drivers.

The Stobart VK M-Sport Ford Rally Team will again be seeking a solid finish, not necessarily a podium finish, for Matthew Wilson and Luis Perez Companc. As the Stobart team continues through the season, the confidence of their young drivers will gradually increase, and we will start to see some solid results from the 'young guns'. At the moment, their main concern is gaining experience and learning the tricks and trades of a World Rally Car for future success.

Part of the surprise this year was the running of both support championships along with the World Rally Championship in Argentina. Both the Production and Junior World Rally Championships will be held in Argentina and fans will have every opportunity to get their fill of rallying action over the three days. Seventy-seven entries have signed on to compete in Argentina, including some local talent we have yet to see.

In 2005, Sebastien Loeb, Marcus Gronholm, and Petter Solberg finished Argentina first through third respectively. It would seem as though the possibility for the repeat this season is highly likely. Any of these three drivers, and several others, have the ability to win this event. The return to gravel marks a return to action for some teams and drivers and the fans are the ones who benefit from the action.

suprisingly, Subaru nominated Sarrazin! Read here. My guess: Atkinson got caught messing around with DR's daughter ;)

I rather enjoyed Rallye-info's write up for Argentina.
Unfortunately after super exciting Tour de Corse, this is going to be a wake up call to modern world championship reality. Don't want to say much more. Rather spend the rest of the day thinking about the event that just ended, rather than the one coming. Well, Argentina is an event with superb past. Spectator numbers in the area of 1 Million are no lie. The event used to be of a huge variety with super fast and wide gravel in the Cordoba region changing with the Anden mountains, in which we have tiny hairpins and altitudes that trouble engines breathing. Well, Anden won't happen in modern world rallying. Don't ask me to explain why, in case kids may read this.
I tipped Solberg to finish eighth; there's no luck for Subaru this year.

No Kopecky; guess I'll root for Gronholm this time.

I wish Loeb were cheating, but he's so damned relaxed and layed back there is no chance of it - he's just too damned good with the perfect car and an amazing support program.
Rally Argentina: Subaru preview

Date 2006-04-22

After two consecutive asphalt events the FIA World Rally Championship returns to gravel for round six of the series, Rally Argentina. The WRC's only visit to South America takes place around the city of Cordoba from 27 - 30 April.

The rally is run through dramatic scenery on the edge of the flat, grassy Pampas and in the Sierras Chicas hills close to Cordoba. The varied landscape produces numerous changes of road surface and character as narrow, loose gravel stages high in the mountains combine with flat-out harder-packed sprints in the valleys. Although Mexico has superseded Argentina as the rally with the highest average altitude, many of the Argentine stages are more than 1,000 metres above sea level, with Leg three's El Condor stage peaking at 2,195 metres. Such high altitude produces its own challenges as power output is reduced as a direct consequence of the air being thinner.

If the reduced power, high speeds and bumpy terrain weren't enough of a test, there's always the famous watersplashes. Getting the right line and speed on approach is crucial, and with 17 watersplashes in total, there are many potential hazards.

The weather may throw another tough element into the mix. Rain, wind and fog could be the daily forecast as this year the rally takes place in the South American autumn, almost three months earlier than last year. The predicted rain and mud should not however deter the hoards of fans who line the rally's route, even high up in the mountains. Over one million spectators watched the event last year, despite the snow and freezing temperatures.

This year the service park moves from Villa Carlos Paz to Cordoba, just opposite the football stadium built for the 1978 World Cup Finals. On Thursday and Sunday nights the stadium will host a new Superspecial where crews will run side-by-side through a specially-built 2.2km stage. After two loops through the circuit on Thursday, the true rallying starts on Friday at 0833hrs. Leg one is run to the north of Cordoba and features the longest stage of the event between the towns of Ascochinga and La Cumbre. The finish is scheduled for 1330hrs in the Cordoba stadium.

ENTRIES

This year the Subaru World Rally Team will enter two Impreza WRC2006 cars in Rally Argentina. Petter Solberg (co-driven by Phil Mills) will drive one Impreza and Chris Atkinson (co-driven by Glenn Macneall) the second.

Petter Solberg enters his seventh Rally Argentina in 2006. Last year, Petter had a trouble-free run to third overall. Chris Atkinson contests Rally Argentina for the second time. In 2005 the Australian enjoyed a successful debut to finish ninth.

The Subaru World Rally Team has won Rally Argentina twice; in 1999 with Juha Kankkunen and again the following year with Richard Burns.

DRIVER QUOTES

Petter Solberg: "There will not be any excuses in Argentina. There won't be any sitting back for anyone and I'm going to go for maximum attack from the start. There's no strategy for this event other than this - we know what our goal is and we're going to go flat out to get there."

Chris Atkinson: "We had a good Rally Argentina last year. Behind Japan and Australia, it was probably our best gravel event. We started well and then built up speed throughout the three days. We've had a good couple of rallies in Spain and Corsica where we were consistent, but now we want to fight for position. We're aiming to be competitive and get in the top five. If we can hit this target, there's no reason why we should stop there."

THE CAR / THE CHALLENGE

Subaru World Rally Team sporting director, Luis Moya: "First and foremost we are looking forward to getting back to gravel after two asphalt events. We believe we'll be competitive against Sebastien and Marcus. We demonstrated in Mexico that we're right on the pace and are more than capable of fighting for the lead.

Leg one will probably be one of the toughest starts to any rally this year, but we're going to Argentina looking for the win for Petter and a high finish for Chris. The next three events will be key to the 2006 championship and we'll go to each of them with every intention of winning."

Subaru World Rally Team director of engineering, Steve Farrell: "Argentina is a real challenge for both drivers and teams. The unpredictable late autumn weather means a driver has to be able to adapt his driving style very quickly, but have a set-up that can compensate for the changes in conditions. Even in stable weather there's a large contrast between stages, so in changeable weather the differences can be vast.

Our experience in Argentina has told us that the stages become rutted very quickly so we'll run a set-up that takes this into account. The car will be higher from the road with a much stiffer suspension than on regular gravel events. This should help us optimise performance in the afternoon repeats of the stages. We ran this set-up extensively in the Sardinia test before Corsica and were pretty pleased with the results.

We're back onto gravel now, which has historically been our better surface. In the last three rallies we've demonstrated very good reliability and we'll continue to focus on this in Argentina. Our objective now has got to be to score results at every rally."

BETWEEN THE RALLIES

Petter Solberg took some time over Easter to return home to wife Pernilla and son Oliver to do some skiing together. Petter also did some fitness training to make sure he was fully fit for the high-altitude challenges of Argentina. Chris Atkinson returned to his family's home on the Gold Coast to the east of Australia over Easter. He was pleased to finally catch up with friends after almost four months away. Ever active, Chris also took advantage of the warm, sunny Australian climate to go jet-skiing. After a two-week break Chris then flew directly from Australia to Argentina for the rally.
Not really...out of the 5 events of the year, Loeb's won 3 and Gronholm picked up 2. The only reason Loeb's got such a lead on Gronholm is due to his accident in Mexico, where he only managed to climb back up to 8th, I think. If he had pulled a 2nd or 3rd place win there, the gap wouldn't be very large at all.
Hopefully Marcus can regain some ground in Argentina!

Is it safe to read "Maximum Attack" to be on par with "Crash into/break something"?

don't forget the dreaded water splashes that everyone else has mastered. Maybe that's why they changed the nose for 06? To get thru the water splashes :p
iwanbo 04-26-2006 10:17 AM

I hope Subaru gets a good finish for Argentina. Pirelli needs to make some tires out of pure magic or something :(
jpsimon 04-26-2006 10:31 AM

petter will come back and win this
rallymaniac 04-26-2006 11:03 AM

Thank god there is no Kangaroos in Argentina
But seriously, the car is lacking something this year. Perhaps due to eliminated water injection. Who knows.
Let's hope Petter will have good podium rally and that Loeb will not pick up too many points. Otherwise this season will be as boring as the last one
KAX 04-27-2006 06:43 PM

wewll Petter topped the shakedown, so my guess is he'll crash out of the lead like the last gravel rally. I really wish this season hadnt started so awfully for Subaru, i thought it was going to be exciting with all the privateer teams, but i guess not.

ive been considering buying a BP-Ford hat to wear instead of the SWRT hat this year. Gronholm seems to be the only chance of keeping loeb away from the 3rd championship in a row.
Predwolf 04-27-2006 11:07 PM

^^ Good news to hear.

Goooo Petter! The little battles are fun, and make me wish I could watch it on T.V again :(.

Glad to see Petter is on the podium, but until he crosses that final timing control I'm not getting my hopes up.

Petter is 20 seconds down.

That's about his favorite deficet.

Pull it off man.

Go Al-Attiyah! Take PCWRC!

Al-Attiyah has now taken over 1st in the SpecC !!!!!! A throng of Subaru drivers are right behind, including Aki Teskionen.

Beltran broke his EVO9 Suspension, Pozzo overheated his EVO9.

did anyone watch the superspecials on sunday? (They broadcasted it live over here, and I think that on eurosport as well so you should be able to get it in a torrent)...Right before the podium, all the top 5 or 6 drivers did donuts (except for solberg who apparently had diff problems and couldn't do them...that's what the TV guy said anyway). I thought that was against the rules, but I haven't read anything about this "incident" . A long time ago this was normal, but sometime in the late 90's celebration donuts were banned IIRC (the TV commentator also wondered "did they change the rules?").

anyone know anything about this?
kotaro 05-01-2006 08:18 PM

Finally they were fined for the donuts...I was hoping for time penalties and then petter could have had 1st place :D
