It's Official! Going to Rally New Zealand this year!

Today Carlos (Onederer), Branden (rb5) and myself bought our plane tickets to Auckland!
We're gonna be in New Zealand for 2 weeks which includes RALLY NEW ZEALAND!
I've been doing the happy dance all day!
So...
Who here has been? Any suggestions?

Bastards going without me. THat's it i'm telling the President or PM that i want the island shut down for my personal party. Sean Astin (ME) should have no trouble getting that done! :)

Great! I went last year, had a great time. some stages are short so you will need to skip them to see the lead cars at the following stage.

Well....
We arrive on Sunday Morning (April 3) and plan on exploring Auckland and North Island Sun-Wed. Then we would spend Thursday-Sunday watching the rally.
Then, on Monday Morning (April 11) we plan on piling in the car and driving to South Island for a week. We then leave from Auckland on Sunday night (April 17.)
So yes, any suggestions would be great!

I'll add the suggestions as I think of them.
I would potentially skip spending time in Auckland as its just another big city. Has a very cool harbour (sp!?) with some nice bars/restaurants/shops, but since you're on limited time I would get of there.
I would recommend getting in the car and heading North. Do a search on 'The Bay of Island', 'The hole in the rock', '90 mile beach'. These are some of the touristy (but very cool) parts of the North.
You'll get to see some parts of the North Island during the rally, but you may not be paying attention. So don't volunteer to drive and spend your time looking out the window.
For your second week I would suggest you look at flying from Auckland to Christchurch (largest city in the South Island). Then pick up a rental car in Christchurch. Then head south, Wanaka, Queenstown, possible trainride over to the west coast of the South Island.
If you do fly to the South Island you will miss a bit of the North Island (but you don't have time to see everything). You would miss riding the ferry between the two islands (~3hrs) which is very cool if you get it on a good day, or very, very bad if you get it on a bad day.
Let me know if you have any questions. Also let me know what sights you're thinking of seeing and I can try and be an impartial judge for you! I'll try and add some more suggestions as I think of them.

Sounds fun, but what happened to not having enough vacation time?

Man, you're always the half-empty guy, aren't you?
I'm using 10 of my 18 days, which means I probably can't go to Icleand in October.
But it's a fair trade-off

I prefer to think of myself as more of a brat and a pain in the ass since I'm really not pessimistic :p
Plus I'm jealous. 2 weeks in New Zealand sounds better than my plan of going to 7 different weddings this year.

Any ideas where we could find some more interesting/exotic car rentals?
Hows the kayaking? I hear theres some amazing areas for that but I haven't really looked into it yet. Not sure if the rest of the group is into it though...

Exotic car rentals  Exotic locations maybe, exotic car rentals? The most exotic thing you'd be able to rent would probably be a V8 Holden Monaro. We've had one before, pretty good fun. Unfortunately the market isn't quite the same as the US. You'll be lucky if you see a Ferrari driving around on the street let alone be able to rent one. Your rentals will be civics, accords etc or get yourself an RV.
Kayaking yes. Depends if you mean downriver or ocean. Ocean, I would tell you to search 'Abel Tasman National Park'. Its the national park at the top of the south island. A very cool part of the country. The sea kayaking doesn't really involve too much skill. There are a number of rivers to try if thats what you are looking for. Let me know if you are and I'll see what specifics I can find.

I actually saw some pics of Kayaking at Abel Tasman National Park and it looks pretty damn cool!
As for the "Exotic Car" I think my hyperactive friend is talking about Evos and the like. I think we're just going to settle for a Bluebird Wagon. I don't want my car rental to be more than my airfare ;)

If you wanted to catch up on some car (read: ricer) action, just make sure you're in one of the big cities on a Friday or Sat night. Not that anything special would really be going down but you'd get to see a few cars that you may not have seen before (all the older WRX's, evo's etc).

Just looking for something a little different. Hell, i'll settle for a diesel Hi-Lux...

since i'm not a seasoned traveler like my pal Will. How much should a brotha pack? I'm guessing one of them huge ass backbakcs that can fit my entire mexican family would be ok. couple of pairs of undies, shorts, couple of pants and t-shirts. socks. couple pair of shoes, grooming supplies, portable music stuffs, journal,pens,camera,rubbers...damn this is gonna be heavy.
i know that with Will, Scott and Branden that I am good hands. they are the types of guys that know how to have a good time without being buttholes about things.
what else should i know as a travel neophite?
heh...i only have 3 days vaca time. I'm just sucking it up for the rest of the trip. :)

Crowded House has a song "Four Seasons in One Day", and that is totally NZ. You could wake in the morning and have a bright sunny day, then it'll be raining by 12, then sunny again. So, in short, pack as much of everything as you can.
Really just make sure you have a good jacket in case it rains. You're heading down at a pretty good time so hopefully the weather is good.
I miss home :(
