06 WRX Car Computer Project Almost Complete part 1

EtoS 10-08-2006 12:14 AM

06 WRX Car Computer Project Almost Complete
After seeing what a car computer was and the sheer idea of having a computer in the car- I started my thoughts on this project. I wanted to do this cause A) I'm a huge computer nerd and love computers and B) I'm a huge car guy and love cars and C) I like taking on interesting projects most people would look at like "wtf?!?!" but at the same time be thinking "wow...." to themselves. I also see the future cars be it 1 years, 2 years, 5 years even maybe 10 years away from having them come with home desktop PC's. I mean cmon it's only a matter of time. So at least I can say "hey I was doing that **** LOOOONG before any car company even thought of the idea. Obviously at first I wanted to do what everyone else had done- just simply get the lilliput 7inch and fit it nice and fit on the center console and a small simple ITX based computer. Well I said screw that I'm going all out home meets car!

So what does this mean? Well it means take my home computer and monitor and stick it right in there somewhere. I initally took an old asus a7n8x with a barton 2800 and gig of ram but eventually I came to the sad sad conclusion that this just won't fit. I was even making the case in my garage from some steel sheets I bought at home depo and was bending/riviting to make the case. So I backed down the idea of a normal home computer sadly. I ended up buying an ITX 800mhz board and ITX case/power supply. But I'm glad I went that route with the computer end of things, it's just easier with essentially the same rewards. This is a shot of me installing windows on it. Had it jurry rigged to the car for power just to get it started off.

Now I'm sure you guys are going "so what happen to that home computer in the car deal eh?" well it's still there- I'm using a 17inch samsung LCD :) That's right I got a 17inch sticking right out of the center dash come tomorrow. Here's the sucker in action:

So let me continue the rest of this as in it's sequence of events. Basicly the computer part in all this was simple, just a couple power wires from the battery to the computer and inverter(inverter was used to power the monitor) and ground the rest. Main problems consisted of various things. First off how the hell was I gonna fit a freakin 17inch in the car? My idea was to buy a wall mount and some wood from home depo and just screw the sucker into the center console- so I did :)

This was a nice setup except for a few things. One was that 3rd gear would hit the monitor and thus tilt it over to my wiper controls causing them to turn on. Also hard turns tilted it enough to turn the wipers on. Really annoying but wouldnt of been too hard to fix(just move it up more and to the right). Thing is that didn't fix the 2nd problem- the onboard video didn't support rotating the view at all, so I was literally looking at the screen 90 degrees out of wack =/ not cool. Ontop of that the wiring job I had done was pretty bad(kinda showing all over the place and stuff) and I still didn't have it hooked up to the speakers cause I couldn't find an affordable 4 channel amp. Lots of problems indeed.

Well the other issue was my planning on how to get the monitor setup was pretty poorly done due to some fitment issues that made me have to do it that way. I originally wanted it mounted correctly viewed(which I'm in the proccess of doing). So while remaking the wooden block(totally screwed the last one up and had to add a few more layers to make it stick out enough this time) I decided I would rewire/reroute most of the system. Here's some shots of that proccess:
EtoS 10-08-2006 12:14 AM

Just a mess of stuff. I was really driving around without my pass seat and all that all over the place. I could imagine the look of a cop who pulls me over :)

My friend helping me label and loom the headunit wires. I'm using the old headunit which happens to have RCA AUX inputs to send power to the speakers. Beats having to buy an amp. Basicly had to wire up the harness with 11 wire extentions, 8 for the speakers and 3 for the power, acc on and power antenna.

Pic of the inverter, headunit and comp. Inverter is going under the drivers seat for room and ease in turning the switch on and off for now. I'll add a relay later on that will close the ground circuit of the inverter.

Nearing it's completion I just had to hookup the harness and rearrange some wires. Notice how I grounded the headunit and computer :)

The speakers were a tricky thing. I used the headunit and it had 2 RCA input cables for AUX. So I happen to have headphone to RCA 2 channel wires laying around. To test if this worked though I wanted to hookup some kind of source of sound. Don't have a port cd player or mp3 player and my gameboys batteries were dead.... so I hooked the inverter up and plugged in my stereo I use to listen to music at work(yes it's so retarded):

Still using this old BMW switch to close the 12volt power on signal I took out of my old car after it hit an overpass wall(it was an ooooold beater anyway with over 300k miles). Still trying to find a switch I can put over the heated seat/dccd button placements. I can't find any heated seat buttons to use =/ Though pep boys did have a nice looking clean switch I may rig up to the covers.

EtoS 10-08-2006 12:16 AM

This was me testing out the computer with the speakers hooked up to it. Ripping it to ozzy singing crazy train!!!

Random shot of the center taken all apart. Looks like it's been through a chop shop:

Well after all was hooked up fine and running I organized the wires around and put the seat back on. It's pretty visable from the back with the seat all the way up.

This was a pic of my friend on the pass side navigating some music as we went for a drive. Some guy in an suv was looking down and was like "uhh is that a computer monitor or one of those new laptops?" at a traffic light lol

Here's some shots of the center console with a black conversion I did myself. I'ts actually done in a special way that it's not too shiney to look cheesy and has added on texture that makes it look factory. The past 3 car meets people have not even been able to realize it was even done at all it looked so factory.

Anyway tomorrow will be the completion of the block that the monitor wall mount. I need to drill a 2 inch hole through it to get the power and VGA wires through to the monitor. The mount would lay on it like so but more to the right and put the hole on the left:

EtoS 10-08-2006 12:16 AM

There it is in all it's glory(well not really- there's still more to do). Here's some more with it mounted:

Here's a shot of the block revealed. I'm gonna have a friend sew me something to cover the block up much like a shift lever boot.

And here's a shot of the arm extending more toward the pass side for when the pass needs to have direct view of it.

All in all I still don't feel this project is really even almost done. There's still alot more to be done but I feel the part of getting it up, running and working is done. The rest of the work is fine tweaking things such as asthetics, more control of the bracket(gonna add in some lock positions), swapping out the 17 for a 15inch touchscreen, rewiring the system again cause I'm still getting interference noise(still have the grounds shared so hopefully changing that around will get rid of it) and generally just screwing around with the software on the comp cause outside family guys, other shows, winamp and 30gigs of music(I got sooooo much more but there's some issues with the file transfer.....) I still don't have the GPS software in(I got a GPS receiver connected already and good to go) mainly cause of some issues with the dvd drive over-riding boot priority over the hard drive(easy fix just too lazy to connect the keyboard to fix it) and other things. So I will keep updating this as time goes by.

I also wanna give a great thanks to everyone who took the time to read this even if you didn't post.

+1 for effort...but you've been watching Pimp my Ride too much.

EnterTheDragon 10-08-2006 12:44 AM

considered heating issues and the havok rough rides my cause on a desktop? Using a GPS styled monitor would be far sleaker.
RS_noob 10-08-2006 12:48 AM

Hmm. I too think that that is pretty overkill. I'd suggest using the Liliput/Xenarc monitors unless you have to be different and you also get touchscreen ability. Plus with the Lilliput it'll fit perfectly in the double din with the Mechatronix(sp?) kit. 6.5"-7" screens may be small outside of a car but inside our cars I think it's good enough.
EtoS 10-08-2006 01:01 AM

man i'm not even done with the writeup
man i'm not even done with the writeup
Haha that sucks how everyone is bombing on your idea/project. Looks like you had a good idea and hopefully it will come out really sick looking(good looking). A 17 inch is pretty big though, but that seems like a problem you have to figure out:) good luck!
EtoS 10-08-2006 01:18 AM
Haha that sucks how everyone is bombing on your idea/project. Looks like you had a good idea and hopefully it will come out really sick looking(good looking). A 17 inch is pretty big though, but that seems like a problem you have to figure out:) good luck!
yeah, o well I like this project and my friend who's neither a car or computer guy at all is having lots of fun with it too. The car meets have shown alot of interest in it and even got quite a few guys now who are considering doing the same but with lilliputs- one guy dared to do the same but with a 19inch lol. But I am gonna switch out the 17 for a 15inch touchscreen. Just using the 17inch till I feel like putting the money down for a touchscreen.

Oh yeah to all the naysayers- I wonder what people were thinking when car guys started putting home computers in their cars or ya know what anything interesting period. Think of all that negative response you got from that and what you thought of those people for that kind of feedback. Well you are now those douchbags too now- congrats.
EnterTheDragon 10-08-2006 01:40 AM

Is that last bit of rant even english? If you dont want negative attention, dont post.

Congrats to you though, you mangled your car and managed to equip it with a fancy mp3 player and an obnoxious screen.
EtoS 10-08-2006 01:57 AM

I don't mind the negative feedback much at all. I know some people won't agree with what I'm doing but I couldn't care less about that- it's not worth worrying about. I just thought I'd at least take a jab at the bad feedback. Oh yeah- you were also the guy who said something about heat issues? Wow shows how much you even know about the subject =/ Please go play somewhere else till you at least understand what's going on.
EnterTheDragon 10-08-2006 02:03 AM

I asked if you considered heating issues, never said that you were going to have them or anything. Computers like to breath, you seem like a bright guy, you know that....it was a legitimate question as I was interested in your project (mind you this was when you only had the first post up.

More or less I asked because I wanted to see what considerations youd made and how you planned on keeping the system running cool...but continue to pretend like you're making a groundbreaking and revolutionizing install.

in-dash windows ftw!
EtoS 10-08-2006 02:16 AM

Yes I have, I've been building comps for 7 years now and have a complete understanding on how they work very well. I won't go in-depth cause there's no need to but there's precautions for heat and the rough ride would only affect the hard drive if at all. If that ends up being the case then I'll just get a more appropriate hard drive.

And no I don't consider this revolutionary/ground breaking/never done before. I consider it my project that I wish to share. People always post up here their little projects and wish to get peoples responses from it and I just wish to do the same. If the general public agree this is a complete waste of time- I say good. It just shows how much worse nasioc has gotten that people would rather burn stuff on the stake then give it a thought of consideration. Just know while you're sitting there only able to try and put people down I'm only trying to inspire people to be creative while doing the same myself.
brain juice 10-08-2006 09:37 AM

keep going man, you obviously know what you're doing. screw the naysayers.
MFR Sweep 10-08-2006 09:53 AM

wow way to 'flame' people that show some interest in your project
drrice 10-08-2006 11:18 AM

Looks good man, have you checked out some of the stuff on mp3 car

and forget what negative things people have to say on this
silver-RS 10-08-2006 11:34 AM

everything look good
except i think the "BIG SCREEN" idea is not a very good one

either an indash screen or a double din screen that fit in there
will make it look more "NEAT"...more like OEM

but anyway if u do the big-screen route u must have ur reason

good luck!
RS_noob 10-08-2006 04:57 PM

My concern with a monitor that big in the car is all the light that floods your cabin at night. Even with my 7" Lilliput I think it's too bright and causes me eye fatigue.

You can't come on NASIOC and expect everyone to like what you post. I'm just bored and thought that I'd comment on your project like everyone else who has commented.

+1 for doing it yourself and not paying someone to do it for you.
sergio78 10-08-2006 09:25 PM

I am happy to see the project almost done. Hey the last 2 meet were real good and you should come next time. Sorry I have not send you the pdf files yet but my work computer is on repairs and I should have it back Wednesday or Thursday. I will send them to you as soon as I get on AIM

Talk to you later and Keep the Good Work the project is looking good.

t3hWIT 10-09-2006 12:04 AM

You guys have to much time and money on your hands.

That's pretty badass though. If it were me, I'd stick to a smaller monitor. As far as the whole computer thing goes, imagine... no more burning cd's, just somehow hook it up to your stereo and you're set. Got wireless? Park outside Burger King or Dunkin Donuts and pirate their internet. :D Hell, make your own engine management while you're at it. I dont remember who did it, but its been done.
f1vlad 10-09-2006 12:09 AM

Yeap I got wireless. I am all good to go to do everything. And ask anyone into carputers, it's amazing.

My target at first was two things: mp3-playback, gps navigation. Both now working awesomely. I can play .wav files, .ra files (what normal mp3 players won't play). I can play various videos, etc. Download mp3s from my home server via WiFi (I hate bringing CDs).

I think what we did isn't even that grand. If you go to mp3car.com you can see some real amazing projects.

All I know is I am hooked for life. Whatever car I will own in the future will have computer in it. With that I don't ever need radio or any other thing.
LYHTSPD 10-09-2006 01:35 PM

f1vlad: I have seen your worklog over at mp3car. Not a bad setup. I was wandering what you used to design your wiring schematic. That looks like a pretty neat little piece of software... or did you do it in paint? ;)

Oh, and where did you get that usb port? I have been looking for a 2 usb port to mount onto a switch back like that.
LUKEWMC 10-09-2006 08:41 PM

Wow...i am speechless lol. F1vlad that is absolutly (cant spell) sick.Go computer guys ...go!
EtoS 10-09-2006 11:26 PM

Updated.

Also to the other guy with a carpc, GREAT WORK MAN. That's one really really clean install right there. That's also a really nifty Idea of putting the computer behind the arm rest. I wouldn't of done that only cause I plan to go skiing/snowboarding so I'm gonna need that thing to flip down and don't feel like having that kinda stuff rest against a pc :)

Thanks, I actually used photoshop to do schematic, I tried different programs and didn't really like it. Photoshop takes time though. To do it quick, I think best bet is MS Visio. But there's also this thread about programs to use: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=77456

And as far as USB port, I just used USB extension cable, molded it into carbon fiber piece, that is all :)

Hope this thread that EtoS started will promote this subject on nasioc.

EtoS: can't wait to see your final setup.

f1vlad: Something else I was going to ask you, and I may still toss up a post on mp3car, is how is the screen in the WRX? I know a lot of people are complaining about sun light readable, but I thought that with the way theh center consol is angled and with some tinted windows that it would not be that bad using a standard Lilli or Xenarc. What are your experiences with the glare?

Yeah sometimes glare prevents from reading, but it's during certain times of the day when sun is reflected via screen. I think any screen will not be readable when sun is reflected like that. I have tinted windows, so it helps a little.

But it's not my ideal setup. My ideal setup is LCD on an arm, so i can move it around you know.

And finally, WRX KIT that I got, I had to trim front plate a little so i could bring my lcd closer upfront. On mp3car.com you can see all threads that I posted and i covered these issues there a little bit, with some pictures.
