jdm lights

I had a question about the jdm lights i have, when installing the lights i know what are the outer prjectors for and if i take out the daytime lights out will my hid's still work, another question i have is why does my HID's go out when i accidently hit my highbeams on and to have the it reseted i have to stop the car pull the e-brake turn off my headlights and then turn on my headlights then pull my e-brake down to have my HID's working again i also want to know why my outer projectors dont work someone please give me some help

Outer projectors???

Do you mean the turnsignal projector looking thingy?

I have these lights too in LHD and I am installing my HID kit in them today. I have heard that if you have HID's that its a must to remove the relay behind the glove compartment. Search around and you will find details. I have even heard it says DRL on it or somthing.

Make sure to pull the one behind the glovebox. The one in the engine wont do nothin. I have heard this from HID owners with STI lights.

Let me know what you mean when you say outer projectors.

Also, you shouldnt have to stop the car. Pull the ebrake up one notch and it will do the same thing. Try it for a quick fix while moving.

I will also post back here tonight after I install mine. I want to whore it out with pics too:D

First off I agree about disconnecting the DRL module if you have HID's. It's on the right side kickpanel area and easily accessed once you remove the glovebox. The module says "Unit DRL" on it so it's easy to spot, there is a multi-pin connector going to it. Just unplug it and you're done.

As for your other issue, what I get from reading your post (it's a bit confusing) is that if you switch from low beam to high, the HID's flicker and/or go out and you have to turn the lights off and on again to get them back. This happens because the lights are probably wired to the original factory headlight harness, and the low/high switching will momentarily interrupt the ground to the HID ballasts. This power spike makes the ballast shut down and they need to be turned off and back on again to reset. Since your DRL's are still active just turning off the headlight switch while the car is moving won't reset the ballasts because they still have power. Once the DRL's are disconnected, turning off the switch and then turning it back on WILL reset the lights.
The way to fix this is to rewire the HID ballasts so they no longer use the factory switched ground. The easiest way to do this is to connect the negative side of the ballasts directly to battery negative or chassis ground. If they are wired this way the HID's will come on with the light switch as before, but they will remain on with the high beams and will be unaffected by low/high beam switching. Also with the direct ground they will operate more reliably, especially when starting (no flickering). The factory switched ground system is not adequate for the high initial current drawn by HID's.
I recommend that you make these mods as soon as possible. Every time the HID's flicker or shut down will shorten the life of the components, especially the bulbs.

Brian,

Can't wait to see those pics! Your car is already looking fantastic...sigh....I will hold you liable if your pics persuade me to spend yet more money.

Buy, Buy, Buy!!!

That is my mindset, Not good and not bad at the same time.

Anyway, Any luck Slammed?

I dont want to run into similar problems tonight.

WOW! That really looks cool...bet those are bright coming at ya...did you change the fog bulbs too? Hope you didnt go higher wattage bulbs. Looks great man, order more stuff so we can see.
TheShadowWRX 09-18-2002 12:12 AM

looks awesome man!!!!
sorry about the 20 million pms, they weren't in my sent box so i kept resending them, but im assuming that means you get like 10 so anyway...

Kick as... arse Lights

BTW, your hood isn't closed in the first picture right?
Just making sure...

Mike
STR8OUT 09-18-2002 12:34 AM

Thanks for the compliments. No Rob, I didn't get higher watt bulbs in the fogs, I remember you told me that your harness started to see signs of melting with the higher watt bulb. Thanks for the reminder though.

Oh yeah Mike, the hood is open.

TheShadowWRX 09-18-2002 01:19 AM

Just asked him for ya Zacek...
They are the factory fogs, i thought they looked different too at first though.

What kind of HID kit is that?
TheShadowWRX 09-18-2002 01:56 AM

They are the H1 7000k off ebay, his name is: [email protected]

BTW: He is a very reputible man so if you have any questions about the kits he sells he would be more than hapy to help ya out.

S-WRX 09-18-2002 02:12 AM

how much is the HID I am interested when my paycheck comes :)
how about installation? easy? I have a harness for my jdm light, will it affect at all? sorry for the newb question.

Thanks.
TheShadowWRX 09-18-2002 02:16 AM

Well as Brians personal sectrorial manager at the current moment, he has many as he is soo important  , the HIDs were 370 or so shipped and im pretty sure installation was just drilling a hole or two and soldiering some wires...
Also i heard there were some problems with having DRL's and LHD or JDM lights so you may/proably would have to disable the DRL. What a tragety to loose such a wonderful feature such as DRLs :(

Mike

P.S. Slightly editted after Brians post lol
STR8OUT 09-18-2002 02:17 AM

HID was $370 shipped but I bought 2 sets, one for me one for a friend.

Installation onlt involved drilling out the hole for the harness connectors and some solder and tape. Plug and play with some improvements.

TheShadowWRX 09-18-2002 02:18 AM

370 each or for both??

Mike

G-night. hehe

ah ok, I thought you got a buy one get one free deal or something!

Mike
STR8OUT 09-18-2002 12:24 PM

Hmmmm, I guess slammed fixed his problem or somthin. That is wierd he never reported back to us to let us know what happened.

FYI, mine have been running fine for the 1st day. I like the "ground to the chassis" idea.

By the way, does your low beam stay on with your high beams now??? Mine does and I think it might be because I grounded to the chassis. I like it better this way. Soooooooo friken bright.

-Brian
Mulder 09-18-2002 12:45 PM

Yes, by grounding the ballast to the chassis the low beam will be on whenever the light switch is in the second position, where power is supplied to the lights. The high/low switch position doesn't matter because you are no longer using the switch to control the low beams.
So by doing this you are not only taking the high current HID load off the switch but also allowing the low and high beams to be on at the same time.
The only downside to wiring the lights this way is that if the lights are off and you "flash" someone by pulling the switch back, both the low and high beams will come on. Since this is typically done very quickly (on/off) it is not very good for the HID's since they don't get a chance to come on fully and stabilize. Doing this often will shorten their life so I suggest avoiding it. I have a fix in mind for mine but I haven't actually done it yet.

Enjoy your lights! :D
STR8OUT 09-18-2002 01:13 PM

Thanks for the tips.

That does kinda suck though. I ALWAYS flash oncoming traffic when I see a cop hiding. I am also that a-hole behind ya blinding you because you will not pull to the right.:D

Keep me in mind if you think of somthing to fix that, I would like to be able to have the flash feature sometime in the future.

Also, Do I have to change the fuse or anything? Let me know.

Thanks again,
-Brian
Mulder 09-18-2002 10:41 PM

If you aren't blowing the 15A fuse that's in the light circuit now, you shouldn't have to change it. Some HID kits draw more than that and cause it to blow so you may have to use a 20A fuse. If it hasn't blown by now it probably won't.
As for the wiring/ high beam situation, mine is a bit different from yours because I have Morettes and you have JDM's.
If you want to be able to flash them safely, one thing you can do is add a relay in line with the ballast ground wires, and have it controlled by the switched ground that originally connected to the low beams. This will keep the low beams off when you flash the highs, and it will also turn them off when the lights are on and you switch from low to high beams. So you would gain the ability to flash the lights without the HID's, but lose having the lows and highs on at the same time. Unfortunately, that's the best solution unless you want to do more rewiring.
PM me if you'd like to discuss this further.
TheShadowWRX 09-18-2002 10:43 PM

Couldn't you just wire it to flash the parking lights? if you have done the foglight mod that would be plenty to get there attention...

Mike
