Hybrid Auto Cross Track Day Invite 4 California

Team Blew just wanted to make sure that everyone has heard about the Hybrid autocross-track event that we are going to be putting on Saturday, February 18th. This event will take place up in the Antelope Valley, near Lancaster, at Willow Springs International Raceway. We are renting out their Horse Thief Mile track for the entire day, and will be designing an autocross style course right on the track! These types of events were done in the past by the So Cal Solo 2 group, up at Buttonwillow race track, and are a fun and easy way to try out the experience of driving on an actual race track, while not exposing yourself to the risks of driving all out at high speeds. As an autocross, the speeds on course will be kept within "highway" speeds.
Because Horse Thief Mile is a "canyon simulation" race track, for this first event we are only allowing experienced autocrossers, or HPDE (high-performance driving events) drivers to participate. The issue is that unlike a lot of race tracks, Horse Thief Mile has a lot of vertical elevation changes, and a couple of the downhill road sections along with the limited run-off area. This raises the element of risk to the point that a car might sustain damage if not handled properly. For this reason, it is not like the rest of the autocrossing we have done where it is practically impossible to damage your car.
If you have the demonstrated car control skills, then this event should be a blast, and a great way to keep your skills up for the upcoming ProSolo, and Solo 2 National Tours coming our way at the beginning of March. To find out more information you can read the thread posted in the Events section of the Team BLEW forums at: http://www.weblumen.com/subaru/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=983&PN=1 , titled "Feb 18 Practice at Willow Springs". You can also register for this event at the MyAutoEvents website at: http://www.myautoevents.com/pls/mae/frmEventDetail.Show?psevent_id=4594 See track pictures at that site also.
The cost for this event is $70, and WSIR will also charge you $10 for entering the facilities on the weekends, so it will cost you $80 for the day. We are limiting this to 65 experienced drivers only, so everyone should get in plenty of runs and practice!
Disclaimer: This event is not associated with the So Cal Solo 2 program, and being put on privately through Team BLEW.

hmmm...didn't know such a track exsisted. cant tell 100% from the photo but it appears the track is sloped up from the first corner after the long straight.
this would be pretty fun to drive on a non cone day. I guess you can simulate the "real" road width and staying in-between the double yellow with teh cones ;)

PM me, to add me to your mailing list. If I wasn't already going to Willow Springs NASA event on the 11 and 12, I would be down for this.
At the price, I might just leave the subaru at home and show up in my Aveo. It might be a cheesy anemic little car, but it caries some nice cornering speed.

What's American Touge? A video or event?
I looked up events for this track but all I could find were Motorcycle events. Do you know how to find any car events for this track? Also, how is it run? One car at a time like a sprint type thing?

"American Touge" ... US version of japanese Touge pursuit racing ... as typically seen in the Best Motoring Videos. They recently video taped a US edition at Horse Thief Mile. Do a google for Best Motoring Video's.
Event will be run Auto Cross style ... one car every 20 seconds. No wheel to wheel racing. No flying laps. Cars go through a finish line, get their time and then line up for next run. Gives your brakes a chance to cool off.

Are spectators allowed ? I know Willow will squeeze the 10 bux out of me, but I might like to go and watch. Maybe take some pitchers.

Nice! Have fun guys, I need a wheel bearing replacement otherwise I'd go. Hopefully it works out and you guys can run this event again.

That would be great if you would take photos.

If you run it again, plan it for Sunday and I'll do my best to make it. How many runs will everyone get?

You guys are lucky you got Willow Springs to even rent you Horse Thief Mile. Usually they take the position that it's too dangerous for cars, with the exception of events like Togue. Most HPDE groups aren't able to rent it. I run on the Big Track and Streets of Willow all the time in my EVO, but I have never even seen Horse Thief Mile. The gates are usually locked. Would like to try it though.

Yup that is the popular story, but it has been used by several drifting clubs. It does present some challenges in that there is no run off room at times on the track.
But for an autocross/track day it should rock! The basic idea we are using is to allow the cars to run flat out until the curves, and then pinch off the exits of the turns to keep the speeds down and people out of any sort of trouble, that is unless your brakes give out ;)
Right now the number of folks signed up means that each group will have the track for 4 hours! Unfortunately if we cannot reach our minimum driver numbers by Feb 9th, then we might have to cancel the event, simple because we will not have enough people to safely put on this event. :(

Format has changed. We did not get enough people to run this event as an autocross. Instead we have converted the event into a private track rental day. We are basically going to group people by the lap times they want to / can run safely. Everyone will then be spaced out so that no one catches up to anyone, so there will be no need for passing. We are not sure how many laps, or how much time each group will consist of, the issue at this track is with all the elevation changes, brakes could heat up fast. We'll basically run the groups to keep people out of brake fade issues.
So if you want a private stretch of Stunt Canyon, Santiago Canyon, or Ortega Highway for the day, without on coming idiots who cross over the center line, downed motorcyclists in the apexes of turns, faster cars or bikes riding your rear end making you push beyond your comfort level, and most importantly, no Sheriff's or PD waiting to bust you for going 5 MPH's over the speed limit, or coming around a 15MPH turn with tires screeching, but still within the speed limit, then this should be just what the doctor ordered; a fun day of canyon driving!
Our number one concern is to make this a safe event, so everyone will have to keep their car under control. Driving 10/10ths is not going to be safe, just as driving 10/10ths is not safe on Stunt Road. Driving 8/10ths is safe, and if you know the difference then there will be no issues. We have a number of race track seasoned drivers in attendance who will be more than happy to provide instruction.
So if you can afford spending $100 on an awesome day at Horse Thief Mile, instead of paying the Country Clerk, and higher insurance rates, then you should consider coming out for this event. We did lose a number of people in the format change, and we will still need a minimum of 40 people, and there is a limit of 60 drivers, but as we go over the 40 drivers we need, we will lower the cost per driver.
If your interested sign up at the My Auto Events web site at : http://www.myautoevents.com/pls/mae/frmEventDetail.Show?psevent_id=4594
