Check out the Hella FF1000. I just got a pair, and the lenses are 100% clear. They look a lot like the stock fog lights. I'm gonna be using them in addition to the stock fog lights, so I don't know how you'd mount them in the stock location. The mount on the light swivels so that the mounting bolt is aimed down from the light or out from the back of the light.

How hard are the 500s to wire; I checked through the archive and saw some people are using them. Do they match up to the stock wires/mounting, or is there custom wiring/mounting needed? I'm thinking about some yellow fog lights for winter.

PIAA Pro 80 XT's. They are VERY bright and you will be most happy with them. I ran for like 8 months without fogs in my WRX bumper. You will need to shut them off for oncoming traffic though. They WILL NOT be able to see when you pass by. You may want to wire them to your high beam switch. I installed the PIAA remote switch and placed it on the back side of my wheel, just within reach, so I can flick them on or off real fast.
| brivalen | 12-06-2000 10:31 AM |
Just how bright are the PIAA XT 80's?? What is the install like??
| Chuck | 12-06-2000 11:03 AM |
Umm.. if 350,000 candle watt power means anything to you, if not... they're very bright. When I have them on, I can't tell when I flick my highs on and off. They light up about 1.5 miles of reflectors on an empty highway. I've had trucks on the opposite side of the highway (with a 40' median) flash me to turn them off, and I've had cars coming at me pull off the road and stop a few times when I forgot that they were on. Someone coined the phrase "Night Sun" which is very accurate. The install wasn't too difficult, you just need something to steady the lights and keep them from shaking. I used car cell phone antennas, cut and screwed to car and side of light.

I have the 80 Pro XT driving lights. Perhaps the fogs or pencil beams have different glass.

Hey Chuck, you've got a V4 bumper. Combined with a red car, I'm guessing that's a 98 or a non US car. Which is it?
| brivalen | 12-07-2000 10:00 AM |
All of the PIAA XT pro's that PIAA is CURRENTLY selling all have the same glass. I dont know which ones you have. There is a good chance that they are just an older model. The reason that i bought the new piaa's was because of the clear lens. I had the Hella 500 and didnt like the yellowish tint the light always had
| Chuck | 12-07-2000 10:48 AM |
Yep.. I have a '98 RS with the v4 bumper. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif[/img] These PIAA's could be lsat years model, but I did only get them about 6 months ago.

Hahahaha. They don't perform. They don't look good. They are made to sell to r-b's at good price points who have a few watts left over after their subwoofers and interior neon.
Sorry. Couldn't let that pass...

I got some good lights at Orvis--they're not too bright at all. About 7 watts, I think. The best part is they have a sensor so they come on at night automatically.
I put them in all my windows.

Thursday night I drove up to Chicago from Peoria through a snow storm and so I've ordered some Hella 500 Amber fogs and a rear foglight; the glare even on low beams was really bad, and the stock fogs just don't have any range. Maybe later I'll look into some driving lighs, but I need to deal with the current weather first. I got the lights from Susquehanna for 75.something, not a bad outlay for lighting. If I ever move back out to Colorado, maybe I'll look into a lightbar and some 1000 Driving lamps; blind all those damn tour buses that ply Clear Creek Canyon these days.

In summary:
Okay, so you don't want the 500s. I don't know if the 1000s fit (and I didn't want to spend the extra $ for fog lights; they cost more than twice as much). The PIAA kit's expensive and is no good for regular street driving (high beams only light). Catz are junk. Uh, maybe you should just get some covers for the bumper, but a good set of those is going to be just as much as fog lights. I'm stumped. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/confused.gif[/img]

Just go with stock, pretty good price at subaruparts.com it's worth the extra money for stock over cheap aftermarkets fogs, because installation is a no-brainer and they fit *perfect*.

STOCK FOGS!!! you have to be kidding me?? Why would you upgrade to those? Im sure lots of people have them and for lots of different reasons but just because they fit perfect is no reason to buy them. And the Hella's are alot cheaper infact. I have an OBS w/ RS ver 5 bumper and installed Hella 500's for about $70 from Pepboys. I worked at the Subaru dealership and my cost was some where around $43 each. Im pretty sure retail would be around $160 for a set. The hella are functional and look great. I was just in an accident so i have finally decided to jump to the PIAA XT PRO 80's. Everyone says that they are way to bright to drive on the road with so i might downgrade the bulbs (they come standard with a 120 watt and i will prob go with the PIAA 55 watt that makes 85 watts. It will still incinerate small animals but hopefully will not cause any oncoming traffic to burst into flames!! The only problem with the PIAA is the cost but they are just alittle bigger then the Hella's so they fit almost perfect. Look up Imprezers car, you almost cant tell if they are stock or PIAA. Another plus is that the PIAA's are clear (hella are pretty foggy looking. Just my .02 cents

How did you mount the HEllas? I've got a set ready to go but want to try and use the stock mounting points, if possible. I'm wating to hear from Rallispec if they have a bracket that works.
| SubeDonC | 12-17-2000 03:05 PM |
i have the HELLA 500 but i have a costom mount since i have a 98 and mine came with little useless dinky lights

When i mounted the Hella's I drilled a hole in the bumper cover and just bolted the hella's using a big washer and bolt, To aim the lights i drilled a small hole through the back to the hella's and into the bumnper cover to adjust the beam up or down. Fairly simple. But now that i am getting a whole new bumper assembly from the insurance co. i decided to go all out. I contacted kartboy and they made me a custom bracket for $40. I have them in hand but the car is still at the auto body. I dont really trust the auto body to install the PIAA's so i will do it myself later this week (hopefully my car will be done). I will try to get some pics along the way.
| Yotsuya | 12-18-2000 01:38 PM |
So Kartboy has a custom mount (or at least can make one)? Does it match up the three holes of the OEM foglight to the plastic backing that comes with the 500s, or is there some other kinf peice needed?
$40 isn't too bad for a custom peice. Thinks they could do another one?

| brivalen | 12-18-2000 08:52 PM |
They will make them for anyone. I think they use the work custom so that people dont think that they are being mass produced or something, i dont really know the resaoning. I got mine like 3 days after i sent the PayPals money order

Whoops, tried to post a pic of my Hella 500's on MY98, I'll try again later.
If you want to be frugal, go Hella 500. I agree with an earlier post, $70 @ Pepboys. Use the stock wires/switch, bulbs are only 55w. I swapped them out for a set of Blue 55w bulbs (lazer white or something).
Anyways, they appear more clear and I drive with them On all the time. No blinding here, very drivable.

Brivalen,
You said the light you're mounting with the Kartboy kit are PIAAs, not the 500s you had before, right? I asked Tom and he said the kit was for PIAAs, and Rallispec said the same thing about their own kit.

The Kartboy kit is made for the PIAA's but i think it will work with the Hella's with very little if any modification. I just installed the PIAA and i love them, i only wish that the light it produced was a little more white. When i 1st installed them i didnt use any of PIAA mounting assebmly but the beam pattern was way off so i had to use them. The brackets made the lights stick out a little more them i would like but they still look badass. Also, i found out it was an easier install with two people, one to position the light and one the tighten the bolt down. Another thing is that i didnt take the bumper cover off! I did however use my ever faithful dremel tool with a cuting bit the trip the bumperbeam alittle to alow a ratchet access to the bolt. Fairly simple. Actually i didnt cut the actually bumper beam, it was mosr like the radiator support or something, it might be different on my car because i have an OBS with a stock 2000 RS bumper and stock RS beam. Either was it wasnt a hard install.
| Yotsuya | 12-27-2000 09:45 PM |
Are the PIAA kits just the lenses and wires, or is there some kind of seal around them? I ask because the Hellas come with a plastic surround (with mountings for their own bracket, which is totally different than the Subaru pattern), but the lenses can be taken out of them. I either need to see what the PIAA kit looks like as shipped and/or a picture of Kartboy's mount. I'll send Tom a message about that tomorrow.
