The rumors circling around the drifting community has finally settled. Nobushige Kumakubo, a top D1 contender whose presence is essential to the D1 circuit, has done the impossible. Breaking the habit of the traditional platforms that are seldom utilized for drifting, a front engine mount rear wheel drive Subaru Impreza was confirmed to be his next vehicle of choice.
The 2.5 liter EJ25 is expected to be built to Tsukuba circuit specs, according to JUN auto mechanic. Although JUN primarily specializes in other forms of racing besides drifting, Kumakubo is confident that he can adapt to any form of tuned vehicle. With a vehicle built by one of Japan's best tuners, combined with his unmatched drifting skill, Kuma is determined to keep his rank at its peak. Now the real question is: Will the car be orange?
In the shop - getting converted to butt drive

Can't wait to see it at the D1 GP Competition in Irwindale, CA !!
mmmm......... fan assisted thrust? (swamp boat style) -compensates for the loss of Front Wheel Drive !

I think it's actually the radiator... if you look closely at the pic of the engine bay - it looks like the I.C. uses the space where the OEM radiator is... although it's hard to see from these pics. Interesting setup nevertheless !

why do drifters have that huge rear wing? they work so hard to tune the suspension to have almost no rear grip relative to the front, then they put a big wing on it.
has there ever been a purposeful looking drift car with no BS on it? i don't hate drifting. it takes a lot of skill. there are just a couple things about it that i don't understand.

I've heard the Japanese drivers say in interviews that yes they need grip - and as out of control as they may seem.... they need the grip to track where they want to go.
Also ..... the cars are rolling billboards.... so the sponsors want their wings and gadgets to be highly visible, even if downforce = zero

That thing is officially the dogs danglies.
You need a lot of grip in drifting and the rear wing is very functional.

| makofoto | 04-19-2005 02:20 PM |
HUH !? ... why would you want that ?! ... they do make kits to turn Subies into rear wheel drive cars ... besides the various center difs that can direct more power to the rear ...

I think IWRXIT he was being sarcastic ! LOL
Just take off the rear driveshaft & rear shaft and rotate the centerdiff switch 180 degrees on the center console to send the torque forward & you're set to go like a Civic !
