Leather Seats for STI

Just came back from visiting an interior guru here in Albany NY and got a quote on recovering my seats front and rear in leather and doing the door panels. These are not just slip ons rather he actually removes all the old covering and puts the leather on. The seats would be two tone and have the STI logo on them. I was quoted 1500. Does this sound like an OK deal. Whats up with the "katzkin" are they quality if you get the upgraded leather or no?My big hang up is how I hate the blue interior just looks terrible with CGM IMO. Also to improve on lumbar support or lack there of for 350 he will add lumbar supports and controls to both front seats. Think doing suede in the center inserts would help in providing a little more grip in cornering. Input please...
I've seen his work looks A+...
I posted before about dying the seats and panels and the panels came out great, nice and dark but I'm still thinking I need to go with a big makeover including black headliner.

trade with a wrx owner and make some $$...then do wutever u want with ur interior...dont just throw it all away...
| STI-05' | 03-24-2005 05:53 PM |
not a bad idea...actually I had an offer... no problem with the airbag going from STI to WRX seats?
Whats the money factor in the trade usually, does it make up for the hassel...

not sure...even if it doesnt, id rather hook up a wrx owner with the nice seats as opposed to just trashing them...

If I do go with the leather option would def help a WRX owner out if they have know-how and time to help me swap with them around my area...

Trade with an 05 WRX owner, as his seats will also have the side airbag (they are literally the same seats with different covers).
Money factor is because the STi seats are harder to get.

Installation was 425 IIRC, they send you a video and the tools to install the new covers yourself if you feel so inclined, but there was no way I was going to attempt that, lol

I wouldn't do it myself either...but $425 is a little steep for installation. Looks good nonetheless!

considering the alternative (hours upon hours of sheer frustration cuz i wouldn't have known what i was doing lol) i felt it was well worth it :D

RED04WRX: Nice to meet you too... Seats looked very nice! Keep workin on the WRX looks great! BUt better wash it :p
ATD has gotten back to me with a package price... Looks like I will be doing Black leather Gray suede inserts for the seats. As for the rest it will have black suede headliner and black suede pillar covering. I think it should look good.. :D .. Oh yeah black floor too, not leather!
And I have posted in the classifieds... Any 04 prefer 05 (due to door card changes) that wants to do the swap PM me and make an offer. Mine are getting taken off anyway! Looking to do total swap though including carpet....

I swapped out the leather in my rex. It had leather when I got it and I got a great deal on a katzkin set so I replaced it. The katzkin is great btw and I had enough red vinyl left over to cover my rear deck. It isn't "difficult" to do but it's a pain and hard on the fingers. You basically start with an inside out cover and use hog rings (big staples) to secure it to the seat. I did my front and back in a little over a weekend which includes mixing up my driver and passenger sides and having to reinstall one. If you have any mechanical inclanation, this would be a medium difficulty project.
One word of warning on the door cards, there is no "card", the cloth or leather or whatever is just glued on. These are a pain in the butt to get to lay right due to their concave shape and corners/edges. My suggestion is get it to lay right and vacuum pack it to hold it in place while the adhesive dries.

not too be rude or anything, but i dont think i like the katskinz so far they all seem wrinkly
| lowblow | 03-26-2005 04:13 PM |
If you look at the back seats, the leather is all smoothed out. This is because at the time the picture was taken, I had just finished the front seats, but the rear seats had been done for 3 weeks already. It takes some time and some warmer weather to get them to smooth out a bit after they have been folded in a box for a month or two.

This is somewhat true, there is a small amount of 'poof'- mainly just on the color inserts, but not enough for it to be a quality defect. It actually makes it look more supple. The pictures have accentuated shadows.

How about these seats?

I just got my seats today and will install them Monday night when I get the brackets.
They are pretty comfortable...the seat base is slightly tight on my 6' 210lb frame (38" waist). These are the premium leather seats from Arizen Motorsports . Best thing is they are $688 shipped!
The shoulder is not as much as I had anticipated, (I had thought they might be like SRT-4 seats) But I think they will be better for me as a daily driver. The leather is very nice...feels more 'tough like" than lexus-fine/smooth.
I will likely later add seat heaters and STi logo...possibly with the blue suede insert (later)...at this point I did not have the money.
Contact Mark @ [[emailprotected]][emailprotected]
They are out of CT area...Mark has been very responsive and helpful to me.
I hope to have a picture from him in a few weeks showing the blue suede inserts with the STi logo. I'll post it when I get it.

As promised,
Here are the pics of the drivers side installed.
It is a real pain in the ass to modify brackets to work. These seats do not seem to need any spacers to sit higher - like I have heard the replica Bride seats need - granted I always sat at the lowest possible setting on the stock seats.
They hold your butt in place extremely well! So much so that the lack of a real "hugging" action in the torso part of the seat is not so bad - and possibly better for a daily driver/occasional back road burner.

Nope, not me.
Here are pics with both seats in. I performed a "widening" mod to the passenger seat to widen the base...remove padding and leather...stretch lower bolster steel frame out and replace padding and leather. - Excellent confort now for my 38" waist...soon to happen to drivers side and I will also bring in the shoulder and waist bolsters more.

I got some questions from a member I thought I would post them here to help the list. I also recieved the blue suede insert pictures.
"1) Did you order the mounting brackets from arizen as well? If you did, do the seats now sit lower the stock seats? If they do, how much lower?"
No, I bought the $54 shipped brackets off of Ebay. Arizen wanted $135 for custom made brackets (I am somewhat of a cheap bastard at heart). It was a bit of a pain to drill the proper holes to mount the seats, but the 2nd seat I used some paper and made a template and it went much smoother. I normally sit in the stock seats lowered to the maximum. In this configuration they are very close to what the Arizen seats are. If it is too low for you, simply add more washers between the seat bolts. I did not add enough to the outside rear bolts (bracket to car) on both seats and need to go back and add some more to get the outside "tilt" out of the seat. See this link for detailed seat installation info:Seat Installation
"2) I noticed on their site Arizen says the seats can be disassembled in case you damage a part or want to mix and match colors in the future. Is it possible to remove the whole leather exterior of the seat, or is it stitched into the general structure? I just don't understand really how the seat is able to come apart. Do you have any pics of this?"
I took apart the passenger bottom seat completely down to the frame in order to widen it. After seperating the seat back and removing the slider mechanism, I used a dremel with a "cut-off" wheel to remove the multitude of hog rings securing the leather to the seat frame, then the foam and leather simply slide right off. I have yet to re-attach with hogrings as I am planning to add seat heaters, so I just reassembled the seat and and it seems to have the fabric stay on just fine at this time. To re-attach Hogrings you will need a special plier and the rings....about $15 though ebay.
Here is a picture of the seat frame without the foam or upholstry:

"3) Are there any fitment issues in the WRX? Everything have enough clearance?"
Everything fits fine stock, after widening the passenger seat bottom, the tall seat bottom bolster now push against the center console and the door, but only slightly. - no issues shutting the door or anything. The overall tallness of the headrests are shorter than the stock seats, but still fine for me @ 6' tall.
Additionally here are the pictures of the seat done up with blue Synth-suede and the STi logo:

I had Arizen send me a sample of the pseudo-suede and it is actually lighter and a lot less "purpley" than the stock STi blue suede color. I have decided to stick with the charcol leather and red stitching on the seats..possibly sending the center sections back for an "STi" logo...also getting a matching rear seat replacement cover in charcol w/red stitching for $350. The color of the charcol leather on the seats is almost EXACTLY the same color and graining as the dash and door plastic trim...I mean REALLY close. The seats are much more firm than the stock seats, but still comfortable (and of course holds your Butt PLANTED)..as long as you sit with your lower back to the back of the seat....try slouching your lower back off the seat in a slouch and you will be hurting....I found that out on my first 2 hour drive to Norwalk...
Please post here if anyone else gets a set.

Another thing, make sure you get the "Premium" leather option, as it is definetley worth the extra $100 ($499->$599).
