Left Foot Aches after Auto-X part 1

Left Foot Aches after Auto-X
I have been doing this Solo2 autocross thing casually for about 2 seasons now. Lately, my foot aches the next day for a few days following.

I am guessing it's because I use that foot to anchor my body weight for the six runs.

I run D-Stock, I haven't learned to lfbrake and I use a standard seat belt as a harness.

Can I do something else w/ that foot, and stay anchored? I know, I am being a wuss. Is this a sign that a harness may be necessary/beneficial?

-And the pain is worth the rush.

You are probably just anchoring yourself alot more then is neccasary and you dont realize it. I have a harness and a race seat which hold me tight enough so I dont have to anchor anything but every now and then I will kill my right knee by shoving it up towards the dash even though there is no reason too.

So just try and relax more, and a used $60 clip in harness wont hurt either.

A few tips to tighten yourself in. FWIW, it can help to have someone else assist you. :)

1. Starting seat position: a few notches back from your "driving position". Seat elevation is all the way down (using the lever on the left-side of the seat).
2. Pull on your seat belt and get it to "lock".
3. Move your seat forward to your "driving position".
4. Ratchet your seat elevation up several notches.

That should help anchor you with stock equipment. However, harnesses do help immensely - I highly recommend picking up one up.

I think a racing seat + stock belt secures you more than a harness + stock seat, and its only < $300 for a seat.

But maybe you're hurting because you're standing around all day. I know that's why my feet hurt after a day of autox.

Been there done that. Before installing a harness in my 2.5 RS, I used to get a bruise on my right knee from bracing it against the console. I also would occasionally pop the power window mechanism out of the door panel because my left knee was pushing against it. Race seats would definitely help, but since you are in stock class and can't do that, a harness like the Schroth Rallye 4 would help a ton.

Sunday drive.. it's just a Sunday drive. :) I'm so relaxed behind the wheel now, looking ahead that if I have a passenger, I hold a conversation through the whole course (usually about 1.1 miles)

Schroth Rallye 4 is the way to go. I run DS also but being a skinny guy I got thrown around alot. The Schroth took a half hour for my buddy and I to bolt in. Its and easy install but it helps to have two sets of hands. I still use the stock belts on the road and the Schroth for autox. When not in use it just tucks under the seats.

Now I can left foot brake which definelty helps alot. Plus not having to worry about bracing yourself means that you can concentrate completely on the driving.

a few beers before hand should loosen you right up.
dadswrx 10-19-2004 03:54 PM

In addition to the stock belt, add an extra lap belt so you can cinch yourself in tight. That will solve your problem.

"UPDATE: We expect these harness belts to be available by the end of October 2004"

Are they available yet? will they be in the $155 or 230 range?

KC- Is it fun anymore if it's that simple? I'll answer it... Yes.

Get one of these... available at Walmart for $10-$16. Cheap, effective solution. Mightytite
Is this a sign that a harness may be necessary/beneficial?
I found mine to be a help. When I first started, I had a hard time staying in place. Being dinky, I float around in just about any stock seat. Not an ideal platform for concentration.

I picked up a harness and ran the lap belt between the seat bottom and back, not around the sides. I'd tighten it up and then make like a fat man to buckle it tight (and then remember that I couldn't reach the door  ). That really glued my butt down. And I found ALL of the controls easier to deal with once I using them ONLY for controlling the car.

I'm more relaxed now during a run, and don't find myself locking in as tightly. But the harness helped with that bracing thing early on.

Use that foot to get you to the store to buy some parts and jump into STX next year. We are going to have a serious WRX STX contingent in Wisconsin next year. Even if MNBiker has run off to those silly little Miatas :p

As for what you can do. A harness is really nice. A cheap upgrade for comfort on the course

I suffered with this thing all through 2004. A basic lap belt in combination with the stock harness is sooooooooo much better.

Is it possible its just from standing on the concrete all day?
Achilles38WRX 10-19-2004 09:27 PM

draggin, from the way i saw you spinning on sunday, its no suprise your foot hurts from bracing yourself! j/k ;)

i bought a $15 "Torso Harness" from racerwholesale.com a while back. basically just an adjustable strap that holds you to the seat better, no bolts necesary. just a suggestion, albiet a cheap and lazy one!
draggin wagon04 10-20-2004 09:44 AM

Dadswrx- do you have a lapbelt recommendation that has worked for you?
Jay- I don't think that's the case... I do sit all day at work, my feet may not be used to it, but it's always the left one. When I started auto-xing in Texas, we ususally only got 3-4 runs. But stood on the course just as much. Hats off to the efficiency of the MKE sCCA, TSSSC and WAI guys (probably same guys, from what I guess).
Achilles- Yeah- the only excuse I have is I havent done an event since July, or was that early september? I already forgot how to keep the car settled- or was just too excited. Does this torso harness work or not? Is it half-@ssed- is that why you call it cheap and lazy. For $15 I will give it a try. I know I will probably get what I pay for.
Joe- I really want to. But there are so many parts to get right away... springs, shocks, and tbe all come to mind immediately. Lets see what I get back in taxes-

Thanks for the good input so far.

its not as good as the real deal, but it does keep you in your seat a lot better.
DrBiggly 10-20-2004 11:00 AM

Instead of the CG-lock (which I've heard some folks can't get to work on a Subaru? I dunno, haven't played with one) who has tried the good ol' fashioned babyseat lock?
8Complex 10-20-2004 12:25 PM

Lose some weight, you won't have to strain so much to stay in place. ;)
trhoppe 10-20-2004 12:33 PM

Get a harness. Then it can look like you actually have a race kaaa.

PKer 10-20-2004 12:52 PM

I give the seatbelt a few twists before I click.

Or gain it. :p We got one of our Pro 2000s in yesterday. Upon sitting in it, the first thing I noticed was that my shoulders felt too loose. I tried moving the kidney pads to my shoulders, and ok now my shoulders are secure, but my waist no longer fits!! *sigh*

And here I thought losing weight was supposed to make me fastAr...

Seriously, put on some weight. I'm 5'8'' and 155, and I fall out of the seat on normal street corners
jcroy66 10-20-2004 03:38 PM

Brett, you're invited. :) Second seat was delivered this morning. I believe Phil is planning on installing the seats tonight while I'm at the hairstylist's, dying my hair to match the seats.
Calamity Jesus 10-20-2004 04:35 PM

I'm using a Schroth harness. Highly reccomended. It takes a little while to get used to relaxing, but the difference in the driving is dramatic.
dadswrx 10-20-2004 08:10 PM
Dadswrx- do you have a lapbelt recommendation that has worked for you?
I purchased a 3-inch 5pt harness from Summit Racing about 12 years ago. In my GTI w/roll cage I used the whole harness. In my WRX, I just bolted the lap belt to the stock belt location (in conjunction with the stock belt).

DrBiggly: The CG Lock works in an STi, so I don't see why it wouldn't work in any Subaru. Also, I've used the baby seat clips before as a last resort. The lap belt is by far the easiest way to go IMO.
