Lightbar Fuction and Legal? part 1

Lightbar Fuction and Legal?

Hey everryone,
I was just wondering if a lightbar is legal in the Sate of California or anywhere. Who makes a good lightbar for four driving lights?

The light mount itself is usually perfectly legal but check your local laws regarding limits on forward facing lights. For example if you're limited to four forward facing lights and you're driving a WRX with fogs, you've reached your limit. You need to put covers on the four aux lights on the light bar.

If you have covers on your bumper fogs, you can have two aux lights on the bar uncovered and two covered. I just pulled four lights as an example; I have no idea what your local limits are.

Yup. Everything he said. Plus it's also usually illegal to have any aux lights mounted above your headlights unless they are covered at all times on public roads.

Who makes a good light bar and where do they sell it? anyone got any URL's?? I'm really looking for one that I don't need to have bolts or holes in my bumper or anywhere else sticking out when its not attached, but any will do..
jjc1900 10-20-2002 01:12 PM

Do a google search for cascade auto sport. They have a light bar that i believe dose not require drilling of your bumper. I think it is prety expensive though.
Subie Gal 10-21-2002 11:46 AM

i'm currently working on a bolt-on light bar
for the GC8's and the WRX's....

details coming soon ;)

cost should be no more than $250 shipped

jackansi 10-21-2002 01:18 PM

Subiegal,

How many Hella 500 sized lights can you stick to it? I'm looking for one that I can get 6 mounted with enough room for some HID ballasts in a small aluminum box.

Thanks
Subie Gal 10-21-2002 03:26 PM

it's going to be designed to hold 4 lights easily
but i know it could hold 4 hella 500's with no worries!!!

hang tight... this project gets my full attn now that
rally season is over....

hope to have pix and bars out soon...

$250 is my "I think I may have to get that" price. Only other bar I've been able to find is custom work from rallispec. I don't think I'll e-mail them for a quote though because I know its going to be more than 250.

OT: Subie Gal, drop an EJ20 in that 360! Ok so what if it won't fit, where there's a will there's a way! Good luck on the rebuild.
Jon Bogert 10-23-2002 03:43 PM

Before you go to town with a light bar, you should definitely upgrade your fogs to 100W driving lights and install 100W high beam bulbs. Throwing 400W out front is pretty effective, even with the low mounted OEM fog location. And it's totally stealth.
jackansi 10-23-2002 04:06 PM

Yep I got the kartboy mounts on the way. But I'm not going to push the stock headlamp housings, once I get the nerve to get some aftermarket ones I may just get HID conversions for those instead of big wattage bulbs. I've got about 400watts for lighting to play with before I'm moving up to a larger alternator, so at least 2 lights will need to be HID.

But I want the bar for more lighting options than what fits in the OE locations. Like the Rallye 4000 HID motorsport lights from Hella

I'd be very happy if I was able to get 2- 4000HID's and 2- 500's converted to HID (hopefully) to fit on SubieGal's light bar. Perfection would be 2-4000HID's, 2-500 HID, and 2 500 85Watt.

There is always a chance I'll be happy with less.
Jon Bogert 10-23-2002 04:38 PM

Once you try the 4000 HIDs, you'll never be happy with less. :D I have 2 regular 4000s and 2 4000 Motorsports on the rally car, and I didn't even notice when the regular ones were out.

And don't the 4000 HIDs only draw 35 watts or something? Just for research purposes, what did you pay for yours and if its less than $1500 for a set of 2 /w wiring kit can you slip me an URL? ;) I can't find more than 2 places that sell the 4000 HID.

On a side note, I just got a box from the UPS man about an hour ago that contains 4 Hella 500's :D All I need is the kartboys and a light bar and I'm going to find the darkest road I can and see what a difference 220watts make

I'd love to get a hold of a light pod, but that would probably shoot my whole light budget. The bar when its available will be good enough for now I suspect.
Jon Bogert 10-23-2002 09:49 PM

I got them barely used (along with 2 used regular Rally 4000s) for $1000 from another rally driver who got KC Hiliter sponsorship. For that matter, you might want to check out the KCs. I think they're cheaper than the Hellas. Any HID light is much easier on your alternator.

Everything else being equal, I'd give your Hella business to Ked Beard at www.rallylights.com 'cause he's cool and he is a real guru. He's the guy who goes down to Sebring and Daytona to do lights for the ALMS Audi R8s!
thechickencow 10-23-2002 10:16 PM

Do you have any pictures or sketches of this bar on a car? I'm considering something...but also thinking of having something fabbed by the guys at work.

travmn 10-23-2002 10:38 PM

hey, tcc, let me know if you find / make anything... i'm also looking into something... not sure yet... i was thinking of just getting the 130w cibie fog replacements, but a lightbar + some hella's wouldn't be bad either

Cascade / Rally Performance lightbar

Just an update - we have been working with Cascade Autosport on developing a package for Subaru drivers interested in TSD rally - and the first bit of it was a light bar.

Peter at Cascade had already done an excellent bar, but we talked back and forth and decided to go for a bar that looked more like the one mounted on the WRC car for the Safari Rally (photo attached). The difference is that ours doesnt require drilling... and so will have two small stabilizers on top.

The first three in the batch are done, and on the way. They are nice pieces, powdercoated in black. The price is $310.00, but if you know Peter's work, they are worth it.

Additionally, anyone ordering Hellas in conjunction with the bar will get a discount - we'll sell the lights at the jobber price as a package.

Ken

If someone wanted a lightbar w/o the stabilizers and did require drilling, would that be available? Would it also be availible in raw metal?

custom bar

Hi !

We would probably be able to build one for you - as a custom build it will take a tad more time, so perhaps 50 bucks more to sort it out for you. Plain metal is certainly easy enough, may save the 50 bucks back (grin)

Ken,

Got any close up pictures of one installed? Any pictures of lights on one? Or will you have some once the bars are in?

How many lights will the bar hold?
SubaruWrex 10-31-2002 01:24 AM

go custom..

you could always spend some time and make a custom one for yourself... mine cost me less than 30 bucks CDN and a couple hours of my time... I've got 2 Hella 4000's mounted on my '90 legacy. Bar works like a charm.. no bounce or flex in the bar at all either.. solid as a rock..

re: California legality of extra lights here's the CA DMV Vehicle Code: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/vc/vc.htm

Jaime, et. al, I'm interested in the light bar as well for a WRX. I'm planning on running the TRNT Rally again next year and this time it's at night.

If anyone is interested I replaced my stock fogs with Hella 500's and used the kartboy mounts. They are nice, not too bright for oncomming traffic, yet add a nice amount of fill light. Definatly not crazy bright like the PIAA 80xt's or similiar.

You know I have the aluminum stock to do that right now. But in the back of my head there is a monster telling my to buy a bolt-on. I think the results will be more in line to what I want if I buy one in the style mentioned (Safari rally like, just no holes ot bolts visible when the bar is removed).

Just as long as WRB is an option color!!
MGXsport 11-01-2002 01:26 PM

Peter does some awesome work. I didn't have enough money for one at the time. :( So I had to make mine.

$8 later I had some supports for my 4000's

I just installed some Hella 500's in my stock fog location. What a great improvement. A bit low to really take full advantage of their brightness. Now I need a lightbar! I was going to put the stocks back in when I got a light bar, but forget it now. Hella 500's in the stock location and 4 Hella 4000's on a lightbar should make for enough light to make the path a little lighted.

Only thing missing now is the lightbar, hint, hint ;)

I'm putting some photos up tonight on the lighting page of our site, at www.rallyperformance.com - go to ScoobySport North America and select "lighting".

The bar has a two tabs with four holes, which will allow a two up / two down mounting... or will allow you to put another bar across the top for a four up type configuration.

Installation is about 10 minutes to unwrap the beastie and 10 minutes to bolt on the four bolts. You'll need longer 12mm bolts to replace the factory ones, available at the local hardware store.

Regards,
Ken

Note

The beauty of this bar is that it is quickly removable - you could mount the lights and have plug ins for the wires, and really have the thing off in about two minutes.

Narcisse91 11-10-2002 10:32 PM

Well, I'll be looking for the pics, but if it looks good, I may be in for a bar and a couple sets of lights / bulbs.
jackansi 11-11-2002 12:00 AM

By unpainted, do you mean completely unfinished bare metal? I'd be going for that because I would get them painted the same color as the car. But they are a bit on the pricey side so I'll be waiting to see what other companies may come up with or I may end up laying out my own. But man do those look nice.
Bob O 11-21-2002 04:29 PM

Saw the thread, so I figured I would post up my setup for two hella 4000's. Made the bar myself, 'cept for having one of the guys in the shop weld it up. Only one in existence until I make a second one for a friend.
