Acura is joining the ALMS in 2007
So the husband is a body design engineer for Honda R&D and sent me a nifty little article about Acura's plans to submit a car for ALMS 2007. It's a pretty schnazzy looking car.

I don't know anything about the series, but I'm sure some of you might be interested. So, if you are, please PM me, and I'll send you the email he sent me complete with it's lovely pics and tons of info.

Or, if someone wants to host those bad boys, all the better.

freaking awsome but audi still rules!!!!
nKoan 04-12-2006 01:19 PM

Awesome.

Wonder if they'll be competitive against the RS Spyder.
PhilC 04-12-2006 01:31 PM

It's good to see more manufacturers joining the group in endurance racing, more competition is great for the series and racing in general.
MarkA 04-12-2006 01:35 PM

That car looks awesome!

Yet another reason ALMS > Grand-Am
pio!pio! 04-12-2006 01:46 PM

AFAIK I thought they were only gonna provide a motor..that is..the team/teams they run will use other chassis (ie not Honda developed chassis)..I think then that the pics are more of a paint scheme mockup...
WRXMaster 04-12-2006 01:48 PM

I got excited hoping they would run in the gt class :(
Scoob5555 04-12-2006 02:01 PM

If Honda is serious about this, the Porshe will have some real competition.
endeavor 04-12-2006 02:21 PM

Wow that's awesome. ALMS is already a great series -- and it keeps getting better. I wonder if they would consider splitting up prototype and GT into two distinct races. TV coverage of the GT classes is always pretty sparse because they are so much slower than P1 and P2.

It's strange that the don't have head or tail lights in it.

yea just a 3d model of the paint scheme
BriDrive 04-12-2006 02:59 PM

That is GREAT news!
I can't see Honda not doing the whole car. They can cost effectively develop the monocoque with their newly wholly owned F1 operation/engineering facilities and infrastructure.

The P2 class is going to become a real crowd pleaser.

Now if the GT1 & GT2 classes could just get some more new blood the ALMS is going to further establish itself as THE sportcar series of the world.

ALMS release: http://www.americanlemans.com/News/Article.aspx?ID=1913

Looks like Pio is right...chassis will be Lola or Courage...(They have apparently decided there is no need to reinvent the wheel as these are 2 of the preeminent buliders who have already built to FIA 2006 specs...)

Need to check out Acuras release as well, it goes deeper than the ALMS one. http://www.speedarena.com/news/publish/sportscar/article_6675.shtml

They have plans for an all Acura LMP1 car for '08 as well. I imagine that using both the Courage and Lola in P2 will allow them to see what works and doesnt from both chassis and use the best of both in their own design in '08.
pio!pio! 04-12-2006 03:44 PM

They are just planning on adapting their IRL motor right?
kfoote 04-12-2006 03:50 PM

I thought that Comptech was a factory team when they were running the Camel Lights series back in the day. It wasn't an Acura chassis, but I had thought the engine program was a full factory deal.

Does comptech still do any racing or engineering support nowadays? I only know them from aftermarket honda parts...
Does comptech still do any racing or engineering support nowadays? I only know them from aftermarket honda parts...
I believe that though they aren't currently fielding a full time effort in a major racing series, that they are still building and selling race specific parts for those series, and I imagine that they have a product development deal worked out with at least one or two teams.
solo2wrx 04-12-2006 08:44 PM

I have been waiting for Honda to get back into sports car racing for years. Other than running in World Challenge and providing motors for IRL and CART, there hasn't been much in Honda motorsports participation for several years. This will put them back into the big leagues not including F1 that is.

The last team that I know of that Comptech actually fielded was the old World Challenge before Realtime took over. This was also when DC Sports fielded a team of two ITRs that competed against the Comptech team.

Thing is..this is funded by American Honda...Acura..whatever...not Honda as a whole..so prolly wont have access to Honda F1...in the similar vein that Porche North America paid the money for their racecar..and Mazda USA paid money for their racecar...

Lola body + Acura (Honda) motor = t3h win?
BriDrive 04-13-2006 10:12 AM

Not to beat this to death, but the monocoque is THE most expensive initial cost of the entire car. You can go buy one from Lola, for example, who have been in the business of fabricating monocoques so enjoy relative economy of scale as a supplier. This scenario nets you a monocoque for, say $500,000~$650,000. (you may need a couple for a season if you run into the unfortunate position of wadding one up badly enough)

OR, you can build your own. Starting from scratch, the facilities/ovens/autoclaves etc,etc...will run into the millions when you factor design, engineer, staff, overhead, blah,blah,blah...that's before you birth your first "chassis".

My initial thoughts were, REGARDLESS of American Honda or otherwise, they would enjoy the benefit and resources available to them through their global corporate umbrella. There would be absolutely no reason not to indulge in the infrastructure already in place via Honda F1 with regard to utilizing resources already in place. Indeed, it seems, their major corporate focus long run, is an attempt an invite to LeMans 24hr in 2008 with P1...this makes sense as Honda has always been keen to establish themselves at the upper eschelons of motorsport...It is a MAJOR marketing theme.......

Anyhow...I'm thrilled...I say Porsche RS spyder P2 smokes them in 2007 over here in ALMS...and then 2008...game on, in P1 and P2.

They are privately funded to an extent. However, they are getting input and help from Mazda and Mazdaspeed. Its certainly not being fully funded by Mazda, but they are involved to some extent.
