LOEB tire controversy??
So, folks, what do you think? Of course we are all heavily biased, but what do you think the outcome of the FIA's decision shold be?
Also, since I am lazy:D , somebody should clearly state the rules for those who dont understand the problem so they will know the issue as well.
I am in favor of the 2:00 minute penalty. Rules are their for a reason. Regardless of why you dont follow them, you should not get a break. Just make it a learning experience.
Opinions??

a cheater is a cheater is a cheater....
Citro put on fresh tires the evening before the start of the 3rd day... in an undesignated zone/service. big no no.
they knew it... and did it anyway.
if FIA does not side with the rally steward's decision (to penalize them) then they will end up kicking their own arse in the long run... hmmm think about it...
French driver, French car on French soil??
gimme a break.
i think we will see the penalty stand.

that's what I thought too. To bad he had to tarnish such a good run with an illegal tire change.

Is it me, or does everybody else here like Carlos Sainz. He is my kind of guy. He even gave Subaru credit for building a good product (maybe because he used to drive for them). He is just a no bull, tell it like it is guy. I like him. When he makes a mistake, he admits it. He is all business. His job is to rally. He always gives 110% or as they always say "I push da maximum"

i also agree with what carlos was saying. loeb should be kicked out of the rally. it's not his fault. he was driving like a madman! he really was incredible. it's a shame that it's not going to count. it's the team's fault. they broke the rules, and unfortunatly, loeb has to pay the price.
but as tommy was saying, he was backing off on the last few stages. i think that if he was "pushing da maximum" that he would have caught loeb. it would have been a fight to the finish.
it was really great to see tommy so dominant against the rest of the field... (except for against loeb) in his first outing in the car. should make for a great season for subaru if he can keep it up. tommy's like schumacher... they are both fast in whatever car they drive.
i hope the fia upholds the penalty, and i hope loeb bitches someone out over it... unless it was his idea....

Hi guys, just got back from Monte Carlo. I'll post a thread on the trip when i get my breath back! Truly awesome rally!
On the plane back to the UK it was packed to the rafters with people associated with the rally. I was sat next to the FIA steward that impounded the wheels/tyres from LOEB's car!
Lets just say i quized him a bit. ;)
They have sealed the wheels/tyres and they are being shipped to the FIA in Paris right now to be inspected. There is absolutely no doubt Loeb will at minimum recieve his 2 minute penalty and there is a posibility of a DSQ depending on what they discover during the strip down!
Tommi and Subaru have won the Monte Carlo Rally, no question about that at all. Thats from the horses mouth. If that doesnt happen something very very fishy indeed will have happened at the FIA, i cant see that.
What the steward said was he felt for Loeb, he did nothing wrong but the team has let him down badly. I asked him why they would do that change knowing it was illegal and he said they cant work that out yet? It makes no sense to him? Maybe there is someting fishy with the tyres they used that helped the performance and now they had a big gap they wanted the car back to legal? Should be interesting! :D

Since it was most likely the team that screwed up, they should DQ the team result (which wouldn't matter anyway, since they don't score team points) and give Loeb the 2 minute penalty. He really didn't do anything wrong, but he did benefit from new tires.
Also, Tommi might have been able to come back and win outright if he had known the penalty might not be upheld. Of course, then you start down the what if path and end up at Tommi might have driven off a cliff if he had been driving harder.
Oh well, looks like Tommi will get credited with the win anyway, and Subaru will keep their 12 points.

Rules are there to be followed....
The team was aware what they where doing was illegal, and did it anyway.
If he is not DQ`d it'll be a sad day for rallying... french driver, frech car and on a french rally.. Reminds me of the old Sideskirts scandal on the Pug T-16's back in the group B days - except it was the Italians playing dirty buggers there ;-)
However - Loeb drove a fantastic rally and to be honest even after the tire controversy showed alot of professionalism in front of the cameras - despite how frustrated he must have been. Definately a world champion in the making - and a good one at that.

Loeb put in a great run but I won't consider him a champion of the future until we see some gravel runs like that from him. I'm just a little skeptical of French drivers on loose, Panizzi and Bugalski are good examples, Auriol and Delecour exceptions.....C

Johnfelstead,
Thanks for the inside info! It has been eating me up for two days wondering what the FIA is going to do about the whole thing; on one hand I feel badly for Loeb as I doubt it was his decision to change tires; his driving was astounding overall IMO. The tire controversy will most likely (and should) strip him of the win there in Monte Carlo. Glad to see that Tommi went in and made a good start for the year!
Props to Colin McRae for finishing! What was his placement again? It wasn't too bad as I recall.....
There was a LOT of in-car camera time; that was fun to watch. :D

I'm with Carlos and a few of you guys here, he should have been DQ'd on the spot, it's disgusting to think that Citreon did what they did and then had the balls to appeal the penalty.
I don't blame Loeb exactly, but if he knew maybe there was something fishy with the tires and that's why Citroen changed them then he's as much to blame too.
Congrats to Tommi, he's just the coolest guy isn't he?
I'd like to see the Citroen race in Australia and Kenya then we'll see who has the better car. I still don't exactly understand what Citroen are trying to achieve by only racing all the Ashalt rallies this season... anyone could do that and obviously build a more competitive car, but that's not really the point of the series.
I also think it's wrong that Loeb get's points even though he only races half of the season's races.... What's next... drivers driving whatever car they want every race?? Hmm, France... I'll take a Citroen, hmmm Australia I'll take a Subaru.
If you're in a car that doesn't contest all the races you shouldn't get points.

I don't quite understand this points situation either. As far as I'm concerned they should earn no points until they contest every event. Why allow them to take points away from participants running the whole year? And strange that they are only allowed to take driver's points and not manufacturer's points; someone has a bigger voice here and it's not the driver.

Hey Bugsie1, how have you been doing! Good to see ya. I think that Citroen is trying to ease into the WRC. That is the only reason I can see for only running seven of the 14 rallies.
As far as the tires and the stewards. I think they know the final result the FIA will undoubtedly choose. However, they are on French soil, with a French Car, in a French Rally, with a thousand French fans oozing out of every rock, root and river. I can easily hear the stewards saying to the team, okay we will let your boy take the podium here, but just be ready for the FIA to step in and take it right back from you. It was sort of a way to buy some time to keep their guy on top for the photo shoots, and for French rallying all together. Their will always be some political posturing from time to time. I think that they just wanted to see their boy up top for the TV cameras.
I have no doubt that TM will end up with the points…

Points are awarded on a race-by-race basis. What if a driver crashes in the third race of the season and is injured? Should he lose his points if he cannot finish out the season? A race is a race. If you do well, you are awarded drivers points. End of story.

What is really odd - is that they knew it was illegal and STILL did it. All they had to do was wait until the morning service right ?
Something has to be suss about the tires they where running.
It`d be a real shame if it turned out he had an unfair advantage over the other drivers.
If it does turn out that this is true - Citroen should be banned for a year just like toyota was for the oversized turbo restrictor incident.

Toyota didn't have an illegal Turbo restrictor.....they just figured out a way to by pass it. basically they left the restrictor loose in the intake, and then had a way to collect the leaked gasses and put them back into the intake tract without loosing boost pressure.....The FIA thought the idea was extremely clever, but it was illegal..
forsure...there had to be something wrong with the tires they had on the car.

I think it is pretty obvious that they broke the rules. The interesting question in my mind is: What is the proscribed penalty for this kind of offense in the official FIA rulebook? Carlos Sainz seems to intimate that disqualification was in order. The commentary seemed to suggest that a 2 minute penalty itself was unusual and that the appeal was even more unusual.
At the time of the infraction, Tommi was less than 45 seconds behind I believe. (18 seconds is sticking in my head for some reason). Once Citroen appealed, Subaru backed it off, not just Tommi. There was commentary that they even downloaded more conservative maps to the engine management computer. So Subaru made a decision to keep it safe, not blow anything up and ensure that they get the 12 points for Tommi after Loeb loses his appeal.
Personally I am hoping that he gets disqualified because that will pull Petter up to 5th and get more points for Subaru drivers and Subaru as a manufacturer.

He got a friggin trophy!! (whether he keeps it or not) the points, from my knowledge are given so that they add up to who ever has the most at the end of the season of course wins... BUT, if the guy is not going to be contesting the ENTIRE series, why should he get any points? it's not like he's going to win the championship by only running half the set rallys, will he?

Pure,
I don't understand your question. In Loeb's case, the points awarded may very well be taken away, and assigned to Tommi.
It doesn't matter in virtually any form of racing if you are competing for the championship, but not contesting all races. If you place high enough, you are awarded points in that series.
If some privateer storms to victory at Monte Carlo, is he not entitled to full points? Of course he is.

Sure he could. Burnsie only had 40-some points to win the championship. If Loeb keeps up this kind of pace (and Citroen gets their respective heads out of their respective arses), he could very definitely be a contender for the championship, even over just 7 rallies.
Just the same, he should be DQ'd from this rally. It's a damn shame, as he's a helluva driver, but it's what should be done.

2 things
First of all, yes, he can win the drivers championship contesting only 7 rallies, you win all 7 that is 70 points, a landslide victory. Hell, he only wins 4 and that gives him a podium possibly, what is the big deal here? Next, so you think that Citroen would let him drive for another team on the other rallies? I'm thinking that isn't likely. Finally, Citroen is only contesting a limited schedule as this is the deal they struck to keep their program, which will be in direct competition with their sister company Peugot. They allowed Peugot to win a couple manufacturer titles before competing with them.
Hell of a drive for Loeb though,
TOMMI ROCKS!

For those of you just following this thread, here's the latest:
Loeb appeal date announced
Monte Carlo · Citroen · Sébastien Loeb · 22/01/2002 16:58:38
The fate of Sebastien Loeb's Monte Carlo Rally win will be decided at the FIA Court of Appeal in Paris on Tuesday, January 29.
The Frenchman, who blew away the opposition at the 2002 season opener was given a suspended two-minute penalty when his Citroen mechanics illegally changed his tyres at the final service of leg two. The team appealed the decision and Loeb went on to score his first world championship victory.
If the penalty is upheld, Tommi Makinen will take the event honours, score his first victory for Subaru and become the sports most successful driver with 24 WRC victories.
The hearing will take place at the Hotel de Crillon adjacent to the FIA's Headquarters with the decision announced on Wednesday, January 30.
