Subaru WRC pics from LA Auto Show (some under hood and under car detail)

A friend was in LA for the Auto show and I asked him to take a bunch of pics. The link will also have pics of the EVO and their WRC. You never know when some detail might be handy...

Thanks James, now I'm too distracted to work!

I've got some interior shots if you'd like to see them.
UCI_Scott 01-22-2002 05:35 PM

I also took some photos -- especially the undercarriage so I know where to apply the carbon fiber decals on the Tamiya 1:24 2001 WRC kit.

I have a question: there is some fabric (it looks like raw carbon fiber cloth) stuffed between the rear diff and the skid plate. What's with that?

--scott
pio!pio! 01-22-2002 05:41 PM

cushioning? to sop up oil that's leaking?
Xio 01-22-2002 06:30 PM

Haha! It's great to see that the WRC car uses the same yellow plastic oil-fill cap as we get! :p
Irvine Subaru 01-23-2002 02:19 AM

The fabric stuffed under the diff protector? I was curious about that too so I asked. The car goes on the ramp with a winch and that is part of what they use. The told me they put it in there. I've never seen it in detail shots of a car in use so I'm going to believe the guys that built the display.
It is a real car thought with all the real parts. Look at the pic of the master cylinder/ clutch reseviours and you'll notice they are empty. All the fluids have been drained.
JamesC 01-23-2002 10:43 AM

I'm sure we'd all like to see the interior shots! :)

Thanks,

JamesC

This is a cool shot. Take a look at the exhaust. It splits just before the muffler into two sections to maintain low end torque.

Another engine shot.

The screens were removed, but thats the view from the drivers seat. Sorry about my foot. Nice shoes though huh?

Thought I had another interior shot. Oops.

It is definitely a strap used in conjunction with one or more shacles to haul the car up. Just don't know why they balled it up and stuffed it under there.

Oh! Sorry, the reason I originally wanted to post - SWEEET pictures! Okay, that is all...

I guess the K&N does improve performance.. they are running it. No slight to Shiv's Dyno reading..

Yeah but that is no ordinary filter, that is the mother of all filters! And the intercooler as well...
zabutter 01-24-2002 11:38 PM

Very nice pics. When I was there taht engine bay was closed and the girl said no way in opening it. How about the underside of that car? Totally sealed (almost) from the elements. And the rear brake cooling induction...nice!

SPOT ON !!! JOB WELL DONE!!!

I am now going to focus on protection for my car... sump guard... back plating diff protector... and some braided SS radiator hoses!!!:D (BTW you wouldn'tknow where I can get some, would you?)
Irvine Subaru 01-25-2002 11:35 AM

I just took it upon myself to start climbing up on the podium, open the hood, etc. This was media/training day at the Anaheim Auto Show so there wasn't any public around.

SS Radiator hoses... you could make them easily enough. Silicon might be a better idea with a sleeve if you want that protection. I have a 67 Mustang that had a broken engine mount so during hard (anything sharper than a 45:rolleyes:) left turns the fan would eat the top radiator hose. Just got stainless braid sleeve for it. Taught that fan a lesson!

Why do the lights not go to the intake?
Why is the radiator Covered?
Why are there "humps" redirecting air from the light's down?
Was this a safari car without a snorkel?

For The Love of God, why oh why are there circular imperfections in the carbon fiber epoxy on the headlights?

AHHHHHH!!!!

Intresting FMIC. Is the rad. below it?

I can't figure out what you mean by "Why do the lights not go to the intake" Do you mean why don't the lights provide the opening for the intake?

-This car has a Front Mount Intercooler in place of the street car's radiator top-half. I believe the radiator is mounted low in the bumper opening where the street car's bottom half would be. The air intake for the engine is the bonnet scoop (where street WRX's have their Top Mount Intercooler). There is an additional pair of air intakes that are difficult to see in these photos but are to the sides of the FMIC (behind the small demi-grill between the traditional grill and headlights) and perhaps duct air in to the brakes.

-The radiator is shielded by what looks like 10mm mesh ( but remember we're talking about the lower grill opening).

"Why are there "humps" redirecting air from the light's down?"
-Not sure what you mean..?

-It's not a safari car with that ride height, rims, tire tread, bonnet air intake, underbody protection and lip spoiler. Prob either a tarmac test car or reconditioned car from who knows where meant to look like a tarmac car. There are a lot of other details but you get the picture.

Some off that isnt correct James. Take a look at the pictures i took in Monte Carlo.

The bonnet scoop is there for cosmetics only, it does nothing practical. The FMIC and Front radiator have a shared exit which is the front opening in the bonnet ahead of the normal top mount intercooler scoop.

The FMIC sits on top of the water radiator. The cold air feed isnt from the headlamp tops, its taken from the left hand side of the FMIC.

JamesC 01-27-2002 12:09 AM

Hi John,

I suspect we saw an old model WRC at the LA Auto show then? On the car we had the air had to enter through the bonnet scoop (best seen in the first picture of the thread and Irvine_Subaru's second) as there seems to be no other path. Agreed with the rest.

Come on, are you holding back those revised engine pics you must have gotten? :p

Thanks,

JamesC

Damn those rally cars are so beautiful. Those are really nice pictures of them.

PURE EPI 01-27-2002 12:42 AM

ummmmmm

unless I am mistaken, the normal Bonnet scoop is shifted in purpose form TMIC to air intake.... if you look at the auto show pics, the air filter is just underneath the scoop
Irvine Subaru 01-27-2002 04:45 AM

PURE EPI is right. The front opening on the hood is designed to create a vaccum (notice the tiny lip on the front side of it) and pull air over the intercooler/radiator. From there the air goes into the hood scoop, through the airfilter and around the rest of the induction path. It's a pretty sleek design and not best illustrated from these pics.

Ryan
johnfelstead 01-27-2002 07:08 AM

NO NO NO NO NO

Last years car DID NOT use the bonnet (hood) scoop to feed the airbox.

The front exit for the intercooler/radiator exhaust has air at 100 degrees C plus coming out of it, the Intercooler is taking it's inlet charge of way over 150 degrees C down to 25 degrees or so, that heat is being exchanged into the air that exits that front scoop, never mind the temps extracted from the water radiator adding to that. Now you imagine that being sucked into the inlet charge!!! BAD BAD BAD (read melted, detonated engine!)

On last years car (actually the same car as the 2002 WRC with a few minor mods, its actually called the WRC2001, new car coming in a couple of months) they used a carbon fibre duct mounted to the underside of the bonnet that fed cold air into the filter box by having its feed up front under the lip of the bonnet.

And yes, i have those pictures of the engine at scrutineering. :D

Ok, fair enough..but I don't see how that is going on with this car. There is no other ducting aside from the airbox surround which seemingly seals the airbox to the bonnet scoop.

In fact in the below picture it looks as if you can even see a little light coming through the bonnet scoop and shining on the airbox surround attached to the bonnet.

Unfortunately not all of us are fortunate enough to see the competition cars in person :p Instead we must resort to living vicariously through friends - getting them into trouble for climbing all over the auto-show cars and hanging around on I-Club Motorsports hoping for another glimpse

JamesC
johnfelstead 01-27-2002 10:07 AM

indeed. :D

You have to remember you are looking at a car prepared for an auto show, there are always diferences, quite often the show cars are never used in competition, they just have athe nice looking parts installed. :D
JamesC 01-27-2002 10:14 AM

Yep, except the dash. That wasn't so nice looking. I WANT MY ADL

Go On, build yourself a replica WRC scoob with your layout. I have a spare engine round here somewhere.

Humour, you cant even spell the damn word right! Bloody Yanks. :p:lol:

Cost you $12.50 to see the engine shots, bbeeeeeeooootch!!! :D
Jewbaru 01-28-2002 11:01 AM

my $0.2.

Last year, they had a car with a blown engine as the show car(it was a early test car IIRC). Maybe that's the same car, and they have since changed the intake setup to what John is talking about, instead of using the scoop fed filter.

They can decorate it to be whatever they want, so looks don't really matter.

Evan... what are those pics supposed to be of? You're blurred them enough (or maybe I'm too tired) to make them too hard to see what you're getting at.

Ryan
Verist 01-29-2002 05:10 AM

I don't want to hear about being tired, I'm STILL at work, and I'm getting off in a couple off in a couple of hours and going to my second job for 5 more exciting hours. Well at least I can check the i-club while I'm here.
