LOL funny modification question with exhaust
I know this isn't really the right place to post, but I had no clue where to with a kind of question like this.

So I'm going to get a ti axle back from turbo xs. I know they stopped making the burnt tip style about a year ago. Is there anyway to burn it myself so that it'll have that blue(ish) tip? Anyone know?

I have a friend that has things that could super heat the tip if thats what has to be done, just trying to find out what needs to be done in order to obatain that color.

Kind of like this:

Thanks guys!

I think a propane torch would work fine. I'm not sure if "super heating" is needed.

Are you sure of this?

I had a turboxs rfl-ti and since it had some melted plastic on it I took a propane torch to it. It did turn the tip even more blue and the longer you kept it in the spot the more purple it would become. I'm sure if you took your time and was careful you could do a pretty descent job. That's all if they still make the exhaust out of the same material. It was a simple propane torch that you pick up for $30 at your local hardware store.
Dutch Scooby lover 01-01-2007 04:45 PM

You can discolor it yourself.
There is a thread on here somewhere, with a link to a site where they do it using only a couple of feet of wire, dietcoke, and a 9 volt battery.
More batteries are different colours (9vlt = yellow, while 18 was blue/purple ish iirc.

Edit: found it

Not sure about the article on popular science, but it is a cool one.. I'd try it but i'm not sure if the thickness of the metal makes a difference in how much voltage you'd feed to create anodizing.

Anyhow, i've played around with "burning" tips, it's pretty easy and straightforward if you use a propane torch. The only hard part is, getting the color even.

Different temperatures create different colors... It starts off golden, gets blue, purple, then blue-white etc.. as it gets hotter (not sure if that was the exact order. :))

You just have to keep heating around the tip slowly for the desired effect/color. Once you heat it though, I don't think there's any going back. For instance, lets say you heat the tip in one area till' it got blue, then held it for too long and the color disappeared. If you let it cool and heat it up again, it won't make any difference in the color.

I have a near-mint condition burnt tip rfl-ti for sale if you're interested...
2005wrbluesti 01-02-2007 04:47 PM

WOW! Awesome article.

Are you trying to go back to stock or something? I have a factory 05 STI catback I can trade + cash. ( car has never been in the rain).
iamchris 01-02-2007 04:49 PM

I definitely did not lol or find the question funny.
Force 01-02-2007 04:51 PM

Good news, they started making the burnt tip again! How do I know? I ordered it 2 months ago (not expecting the burnt tip) and it came pre-burnt!

This is exactly what came to my front door (with blue tip), only I have the cat-less setup

I'm so sorry you didn't how can I help?!?
2005wrbluesti 01-02-2007 04:57 PM

That article is good. But let me clear some things up.

So I soak the tip with soda, and then take a 12V or 18V battery with clips. But what do I clip?

Then you woke up...lol
Dutch Scooby lover 01-02-2007 05:36 PM

Take the clips, and clip the - to the exhaust pipe, somewhere out of the way
The + clip goes onto the tinfoil, which is then soaked in Dietcoke.

If u touch the metal with the tinfoil it will discolor.
Id try it on the underside first.

You could also use electricians tape to mark of parts u dont want to discolor.
If you would make the tip go yellow to lightblue to purple at the end, mask of everything but the first part (that connects to the silencer)
Apply 9 volts, and wipe it really good.

Then tape up the yellow you just did, and tape the end of the tip.

Now use 2 9volt batteries in series, to make the middle part blueish

Then tape of everything but the end of the endtip, and use 3 9volt batteries in series, to paint/discolour the endtip.

Go slow, cause if u use to much voltage it will discolour to much, forcing you to polish the tip and start over.

but i am not sure how well it would work on Ti

did some research and
most of the products state
Will NOT work on Ti

Ok well I'm about to do this. Do you think there is any safety issues with this?
05wrxmatt 01-02-2007 10:52 PM

Anodizing titanium is fun. BTW, use a 10% solution of Simple Green for good, non-toxic results. I recommend filling a plastic dish with enough Simple green solution to cover as much of the muffler tip that you want to color. The only part of the muffler that will be anodized will be the part that is submerged in the solution.

You need about 45 volts, DC to get a blue color in titanium.
Sorry about the big picture, but it gets the point across.

Here's a few good links.

Yes, there is many.

12v didn't do crap. I'm thinking about just burning it.

I've anodized a few titanium chainrings for my mountain bike. I used about 45 volts, and they are now a nice blue color.
I've anodized a few titanium chainrings for my mountain bike. I used about 45 volts, and they are now a nice blue color.
how did you do it though, what did you use?
05wrxmatt 01-02-2007 11:41 PM
how did you do it though, what did you use?
I used a 10% solution of simple green, and submerged the chainring in it. I connected two 22 volt AC -> DC converters together to get 44 volts, and connected ithe positive side to the titanuim. I used a 3" square piece of aluminum foil as a ground and submerged that into the sulution too. I hooked up the power, and let it sit for a few minutes.

A couple of tips if you decide to do this:

Make sure that the titanium is completely clean before you start, any diry/oily parts won't anodize properly.

Don't let the titanium parts and the ground touch (duh).

Don't sue me if you electrocute yourself. 44 volts DC won't kill you, but it will hurt.

Also, Google is your friend. That's where I learned how to anodize titanium.

btw, i found out that even 1v can kill you.
Dutch Scooby lover 01-03-2007 07:11 PM

It's not the voltage that kills, its the Amperage
(At least thats what i seem to remember)
Mach V Dan 01-03-2007 10:03 PM

I'm sorry, I just couldn't stop thinking of posting something like:
1. Attach positive lead to 44 volts DC
2. Attach negative lead to exhaust tip submerged in fluid
3. Connect other end of positive lead to left nipple
4. Connect other end of...
You get the idea. ;)

Anyway, as mentioned, TurboXS ti-tip exhausts are now shipping WITH a flame-blued tip. Huzzah!

Hey, this thread is awesome! :) I never knew anodizing titanium was that easy.
2005wrbluesti 01-04-2007 02:41 PM

WELL. Dan you saw it non-blued yesterday! BUT last night I was bored, went to Home Depot and used my xmas gift card up!

Got myself a propane torche for like 35 bucks.

I just slowly but surely held the blow torche over the exhaust. Its kind of like cutting out your bumper for a fmic install. You have to just go slow because once it changes color, it won't go back. First it changed from yellow to purple to blue.

Check it out!
