Best of luck. Wish I could be in Anchorage for the finish this year.

Can't wait for them to get to Anchorage so I can see the cars. :D

A friend of mine competed in the TSD Alcan Rally a couple years ago in a prototype Subaru SUS (sport utility sedan) and drove it off the road and over a 30 foot ledge, totalling the car. It's definately an interesting event. He's not a Subaru driver, but afterwards he said he couldn't think of a better vehicle to do a TSD in.

are they allowing bikes this year?
| psoper | 02-03-2004 12:01 AM |
They are doing a summer event with bikes, but I don't think you'd find anyone that would do it on a bike in winter, (its friggin 40 below zero up there for cryin out loud!)
| whtlegacy | 02-03-2004 12:08 AM |
oh yeah, thats what i was thinking. as cool as bike rallies are, i think they should just keep it all cars personally.
| psoper | 02-03-2004 12:12 AM |
The guys that ran in 2002 are some real hard core riders, one day was about 850 miles, a lot of it on gravel, all together they each rode nearly 4500 miles on the rally alone, not to mention getting there and back.
And I have to say, it was pretty cool having them along, they definetly added a dimension to the event that you don't have when it's only cars.

There's quite the line up of KTMs for the summer event, like a mini Dakar!
We'll try and post some pics of the cars soon.

news from the snowbanks

All 3 cars survived today's stages at Tbird --- we're having fun, great roads and great conditions, some fresh snow and poor visibility early on, the night stages were excellent. People still raving in the bar about them.
The STi's diff setup proves its worth on the snow. :)
Our tracking system is working well too.
http://www.teamhightower.com/Buki/where.htm
Yes Richard, that's a Garmin GPS on the roof. I will say hi to Greg for you.
We got in some ice racing practice on Barnes Lake Friday - hitting 85 by 2/3 of way down straight into early turn for short course (due to rut flooding/repairs). Full Brembo braking action with no ABS, we really heated up the brakes on the ice. Some flat out in 4th action over some big pressure ridges.
I will try and post pics Monday.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Subaru Dominates the 34th running of the Thunderbird Rally
Merritt, British Columbia, February 15, 2004 A near record number of entries started the 2004 Thunderbird Rally Saturday February 14th for two days of rallying on ice and snow covered logging roads between Merritt and Kamloops, British Columbia. Of the 63 cars setting forth on this winter adventure, 29 wore the Subaru nameplate, seven of which would come home in the top ten, including the first four overall. Subarus won all four non-historic classes.
Glenn Wallace and Greg Hightower in a 2004 Impreza WRX STi were first o/a and first in the Unlimited Class. Paul Eklund and Kala Rounds in a 2004 Forester XT were first in the Calculator Class and sixth o/a. The third member of the Subaru Alcan Challenge Team, R.Dale Kraushaar and Larry Richardson in a 2004 Baja Turbo finished third in the Unlimited Class and third o/a just 15 seconds back of their teammates.
The Thunderbird Rally recently revived the team competition with an added twist. Each team must include a Novice entry to be part of their team. Ashton Evens and Brina Slanders on just their 2nd rally joined the Subaru Alcan Challenge Team in their Impreza WRX for this weekend driving adventure. Their sixth place finish in the Novice Class helped the team claim the perpetual cup for First Place Team.
The Thunderbird rally served as the final shakedown for the team before the Alcan Winter Rally beginning in Kirkland, Washington on February 18th. The team was very pleased with the performance of their equipment. The Cooper tires were tested under the most strenuous conditions and performed magnificently. The ICOM radios had excellent range and kept the team in touch throughout the event. And the Forester, WRX STi and Baja performed in true Subaru all-wheel drive style.
Thunderbird pictures and stories will be posted on the team web site soon. Daily updates from the Alcan Winter Rally are scheduled to begin February 18th.

After 6 years -- about time. Greg used a special stick to slow me down and keep us out of snowbanks. Our technique was to take all of the corners carefully with no heroics (even when we were down on time) take whatever points came up at the controls and push very hard in the straights.
The diff lock (DCCD) and Suretrac front diff on the car allowed us to go faster through the corners than we otherwise would have, well within our comfort zone.
Also probably the first TBird won by a car on 45 series tires!!!!!
Busy time for all the team now getting the cars ready for Alcan tech on Tuesday before FCO Wednesday 8AM.

(contradicting the sponsors stickers on our car...) Nokian Hakka 2's. Studded and siped. Pretty good for a fat 225 width tire!!!

Home at last - after 7000 miles!

What a road trip!
We saw sights that cannot be described and that pictures cannot capture.
The highlight of the trip was the 500 mile drive up the Dempster Highway to Inuvik, then up the Mackenzie River and onto the Arctic Ocean to Tuktoyaktuk.
The Subaru team captured:
3rd Overall, 1st in Class 3 - #4 Forester Eklund/Rounds/Reid
4th Overall, 1st in Class 1 - #10 Wallace/Hightower/Carozza
5th Overall, 3rd in Class 2 - #2 Kraushaar/Richardson/Engstrom
Team Trophy - 1st placed team using TBird scoring system
Highest placed rookies (#10).
Congratulations to the 2 BMW X3 teams that finished in 1st and 2nd overall.
The Subarus ran reliably - the only issue worth mentioning is a shifter bushing on the STi became a bit sloppy before the event, but didn't get any worse.
