Nice driving Sortor!!

Josh Sortor made it to the Hawk Super Challenge Final round against Jason Uyeda this afternoon!! And took out the Bob Tunnell for the STX class win! :) The only downfall is that J-so didn't quite get by Uyeda for the Challenge win.... but still drove damned well. Congrats!!!

w00t! WTG Josh! Beating Tunnell by over a second? Well played. :)

Karen, Josh, or anyone else that went. :)
What was the course like? We were discussing yesterday evening that Josh was about 2 seconds faster than (for instance) some of the CS Miata folks that beat STX by 1 second at the Atlanta Pro. But the Atlanta Pro was definitely NOT a power course. So what was the Wendover Pro like? Basically, the question here is: is Josh now 3 seconds faster than the east-coast STX folks??

Which CS Miata folks? Kyung? Donnie?
For reference, Kyung cut her finger pretty badly Saturday afternoon -- rumor has it that she actually cut the tip of it off  -- and spent most of the night in Salt Lake at the hospital. She wasn't exactly driving 100% yesterday.
It was a fast course, yes. But for additional reference, when I went up against Mark Chiles in the challenge (yes! I actually made the challenge! first time ev4r!! ;) :D), I discovered that the dial-ins for GS and DS weren't significantly different! In fact, Mark was merely 0.2 behind the DS winner. A Cooper S isn't exactly a power car....
But, the most significant difference between Atlanta and Wendover, and the one that is probably applicable to what you saw in the results, is the altitude difference -- and the fact that Josh is in a turbo car vs. the NA Miatas. :)

Wow, I figured with a 1.4 difference between 1st and 2nd in STX, that Josh would have been either top qualifier or second qualifier. 7th?? Wow. Nearly a 4-second difference between 1st and 2nd in Prepared Index. Someone needs to learn how to sandbag!!
As for comparisons, yeah, we looked at Kyung and Donnie's results. I figured it's a little harder to compare using the Hollises' results, since I think they've spent most of the early part of this season experimenting with tires. And since Andy was in STX instead of STS, I assume that he was messing around with tire setup more than usual. :)
OUCH about Kyung's finger. OUCH, OUCH, OUCH.
Karen, I had indeed noticed that you made the Challenge! I meant to say "congratulations!" I didn't realize it was your FIRST though. So Super-Duper Congratulations! :)
Also, if Debbie Kerswill still reads this board occasionally, a "congrats" to her too, for making the Ladies Challenge! :) Looks like places 3-7 in L1 were very tight!

Good job beating Tunnell.
You can look at the results and see what kind of course it was. SP/SM cars are at the top. I think Gary Thomason crushed everyone on index.
Heh what was with Navid Kahangi's 4 RLs in a row on Sunday? If you are going to sandbag don't make it that obvious. ;)

Course was fast to super fast offsets going out, fairly tight turn around into super fast long slalom into super fast offsets to tighter short slalom stab to the finish.
Remember that Wendover is over 4300 feet in elevation. Turbo cars come on strong. In my SRT-4 I was covering the SS Z06's by atleast a tenth in the 200 foot practice start times. That's after giving up a couple of tenths in the 60 foot. Too bad the car doesn't turn and the driver is a tard.
Gary's car has more N/A power than he can use, so he wasn't as hurt by altitude as other non-boost cars and it was a good course for a powerful Z06 in the hands of an ubersmooth driver.

Karen, congrats on your results, and nice meeting you in person. Unlike last year, I actually got to watch Josh drive. Good job all.
With some luck I'll get my videos transferred tonight so you can see the course hanging on to the top of an STi. :) In my STi, it was flat out into third gear until the turn around at the end, second for that until entering the slalom right after and back to third for the rest of the course. Here's one from the #3 SM BMW: Wendover Pro 2005 Left Course (13MB, be gentle with his server).
Regarding Navid's times, I suspect he was sandbagging. I was standing at the trailer during his Sunday runs and he left the line really early a couple times. He was quite a bit faster on Sunday, with, I believe, a 35.0 ish left side time after removing the red-light bias. What you don't see in the results is that the Botkin's Camaro broke down. So Henry drove Navid's Evo and Conor drove my STi (I wonder how that got decided!). Driving a strange car, and in Conor's case one that was handicapped in preparation, it was unlikely that they'd improve their times, which they didn't. If their car was working, they'd have likely improved their times and Navid would have felt a bit more pressure to go faster.
We have 70mph courses pretty often, so I'd think I'd have the hang of this. I could not get my head around the braking points for the sweeper. I kept waiting far too late, which would just kill my corner entry as I went swooping on into the marbles. Still, I got reasonably close to the Botkins this year, for being on a stock ECU and Victoracers. I want V710's!

Here are my videos from Wendover. Best time by far was on the left.
Left Side
Right Side
These were both from Saturday afternoon when I was driving fairly well. Sunday I just wasn't able to match the times. Could be tires overheating (Conor drove my car first), my driving, or a bit of both.
Car is a 2004 Subaru STi, 255/40-17 Victoracers on 17x8.5 wheels, ~3200 pounds weight after my runs with 1/4 tank of gas, stock ECU but turboback exhaust. Conor said the car turns better than their car, handles well, and doesn't seem to understeer. But with 380 whp, their Camaro goes darn fast, and Navid's car certainly pulled on mine like crazy (0.5s faster 200' times during practice starts).

Yeah, something about a cracked differential case (!!!). I wonder if Torsen has a similar "warranty" to Quaife's so that they can get that replaced ASAP.

710s are good. :D
And I know exactly what you mean about braking too late for the turnaround. That's what killed my second-side run against Chiles in the challenge. :( But actually, my bigger problem -- and the one I corrected for the most part on Sunday morning -- was coming into the offsets too shallow, and having to slow down too much to avoid a bad push. Once I started late apexing those two cones, that is when I dropped a ton of time.
I'm just glad it was worth the trip out this year. Not being in the summer, it was a lot more difficult for me to find a way to make this event.

That's pretty much the same course they've had at Wendover for a few years. Sometimes they do a crossover, figure 8 style, but usually it is fast with lots of back and forth gates, and multi-cone slaloms.
Atwater is usually much tighter, as it is a square lot.

Motonishi showed that the MX's can still win ... in fact I believe he's won four National STS events this year already with his MX's. Earlier in the year we were doing a practice session in San Diego when Leslie Cohen was trying out her new 615's ... and she was suddenly faster then Ken. Ken thought that was the end for him in STS and was wondering where he could go next ... using 710's. (Ken has a Kuhmo contract ... six sets of tires/year) But he hasn't lost a STS National race so far this year I believe. Amazing guy ... he's won his last four National events by a COMBINED time of just over 0.2 seconds! Ken came in 3rd in the Challenge ... can't imagine how much power was left in that little Civic at 4K+ altitude!
Ken's good friend Jason U won his first Challenge in his AS Boxster. Jason Rhodes won STU driving Jason U's Lexus 300 that Rhodes is developing for Uyeda! And, I can't even tell you about a 3rd secret project car that they are developing! I wonder how they are going to decide which car to take to the Nationals !
Josh is suppose to swing by and do one of our local Southern CA events for practice. It will be nice for Barco to get another chance to go up against Josh since Jeff B can't make it to Nationals this year. It will be interesting to see how Josh does Indexed against our numerous National Champs ...
Also, if Debbie Kerswill still reads this board occasionally, a "congrats" to her too, for making the Ladies Challenge! :) Looks like places 3-7 in L1 were very tight!
Hi Jen,
Thanks for noticing!
At the end of Saturday the results for L1 showed I was in 3rd, but then I noticed a RL on one of my runs, and knowing I didn't redlight I looked at my slips & found out my last 2 runs were posted wrong. Turned out I dropped to 5th or 6th place with the right results.
On my 4th run on Sunday, I got about 4/10'ths improvement on one side, and I think most of the other ladies did not get that much of a gain if at all - so that run slid me into 4th in L1, and into the ladies challenge - that was thrilling! On my first challenge run I boffed it, I did what everybody told me not to do and ran a little too aggressive and hit a cone. Then on the other side I did the other thing everybody told me not to do and I redlit. Still, a Great experience!
As for Kyung, on Sat. night I hung out with Ann who was watching Emily (Wooten) while they all drove to Salt Lake to an emergency room. I heard Kyung got 4 stitches, (one through the fingernail :( ); and they got back about 1:30am. I don't know how she could even take it on to compete on Sunday morning but she did, what a trooper!
One question, I thought with the heat (80's to 90's) I did not think the altitude would make that much difference with a turbo vs. NA car. No? yes?

That Wendover course rocks! I bet a lot of people coned it away in the tight slalom just before the finish. As for why we don't have a course like that in Atlanta, we're missing 10 acres of space.
Mundi - were you lined up against Navid in that video from the right side run? The reason that I ask is that whoever it was pulled on you hard before the turn out. You can see the nose of the car creep into the video just before it turns left and you turn right, but it was a few carlengths at that point.
Oh I know, I wasn't trying to complain, but just making an observation. Not trying to excuse Josh's butt raping of everyone else, but him being *that* far ahead makes me feel a bit better after seeing the course :)

Toledo was a lot like that last year, only there were no gates on the first half really, it was just flat out, then the second half was a lot tighter in spots than the course above, but no slaloms that I can remember. I think they could make Oscoda more open like that if they move everything back. The second half of the Oscoda Pro last year was painful at best in the SM car, I can't imagine it on street tires. :)
I think there are two sites here that could support a Pro if people wanted to do it, but right now there isn't really anyone that feels doing a national event is worth the time and effort.
That Wendover course rocks! I bet a lot of people coned it away in the tight slalom just before the finish.
Yes, station one was very busy picking up cones in that slalom. It was faster than I expected so I left it in third. Ideally I think I should have downshifted to second while braking, but I decided to concentrate on maximizing my driving and getting on the throttle early instead.

Everyone except him was very dirty on Saturday morning, which is why I ended up 2nd for the afternoon even with a cone. He pulled hard on me as soon as we got off the line and continued to do so. You can see him a few other places too, but honestly he's a heck of a driver so it's not like it's all car.
At last year's Wendover Pro, Josh was 2 seconds faster than the rest of STX on a reasonably similar course. He's just following a trend I guess.

Next time you're running with Josh ... check out his rear endlinks when he's not looking. Something fishy about them. Not saying their illegal ... but I don't think any of the other top STX drivers ... or any of the "modded" WRX cars are using them. Some type of exotic lightweight material ... I've seen them somewhere ... can't quite place them though ...
Josh is a friend ... but I don't like some of the things he does or doesn't do with his car ... :p

Tell you what, you would be surprised at how little of a difference stuff makes.
We finally this past week switched off the stock 5 year old RS rear top mounts I/Biggly was using on the WRX. These little rubber mounts have been beaten with 10k and 12K springs for 3 years. I didn't really notice a difference going to all metal JIC hats other then some noise?

It was a great weekend. The course was good fast fun. My data logger said that right before braking for the turn around, the car was doing 65mph. The tires worked great. In the challenges, the second run was definitely looser than the first, even when watered down. Busting my ass in the challenge, I cut 5 tenths off of my total two side times, breaking out in my second to last run against Doganis. I think there was only a couple tenths left in the course. Tunnell was running 2.2-2.3 60-foots and I was running 1.95-2.0's So, the car was fairly close to as fast once up to speed. It sucks that our season is already over, hope you guys have fun at your last two Pro's.
