$300 for that???

Seems a little steep to me, no?
Handsdown 02-06-2007 04:12 PM

that looks pretty hefty. it won't buff out.

what's your deductible on hit-run insurance? if you can afford that, i'd suggest you do that.

touch up paint won't look right on that even if you buff it and spray the touchup paint on. have a body shop fix it unless you want to run around with marks on your bumper for a while.

someone knocked my driver's side mirror off about a year ago- the deductible was more than the price of a new mirror... i sat around angry about it for about a year and finally just bought a used mirror for way less than the deductible would have been.

sure it's steep but to really fix it you can't just spray some paint over it. those scratches are through to, and into, the plastic... and the plastic's been bent to the point where it won't reform too easily.
gzwrx06 02-06-2007 04:18 PM

i did get all the white off all that is left is the black mark it doesnt seem that deep.. but im going to go take a pic of it now see what u guys think..

slvrwrx04 02-06-2007 04:33 PM

I would go ahead and go with the body shop to repair those damages.
Snitt 02-06-2007 04:36 PM

The bumper doesn't looked cracked, nor should it require removal to paint...I'd get a second opinion at another body shop. :(

I have so many scrapes like that on my WRX from idiots without insurance that I have given up on wanting it fixed. :(
jeffroh22vtec 02-06-2007 04:37 PM

now that its cleaned/buffed out, i really think paint might work. maybe try and do some smaller spots before you get the big scrape.

You said it! I've got so many dings and scrapes that I've lost count... I guess it's bound to happen though with a daily driver :(

...still sucks everytime I find a new scrape, chip or dent though...
_sti_05 02-06-2007 04:58 PM

Its a horrible feeling knowing you have a small ding on your door or a dent. =(
kyleblix 02-06-2007 06:34 PM

$300 is not steep, that will not buff out. They will need to sand it down and do some plastic repair and then repaint the entire bumper. suck it up and get it repaired

hey what did u use to get the white scuff marks off?
druxboyz 02-06-2007 08:48 PM

now you go find a white car with blue scuff marks that lives nearby. the black marks are a bit large for the 'nail polish' type of touch up paint. Sorry that it happened, that sucks...
haophat 02-06-2007 09:04 PM

I guess you dont live in a city? thats just the norm for any city parking. Its pretty much a respray job at the body shop to make it look back to normal.
best off slapping a Sti sticker on it and call the day if you dont have the money to get it done right.

Good luck with that

I have a similiar one in the same spot. I hate it but cant see spending the money on fixing it right now.

Jasonzemos 02-06-2007 10:36 PM

Just save up your lunch money and bring it to a body shop, it might take you a few weeks but thats not a job for touch-up paint. If you want to try to pinch off a few pennies you could attempt to remove the bumper yourself and bring it to the body shop and bargain with them to reduce the quote a good amount.
sedeuce 02-06-2007 10:45 PM

I did about the same amount of damage on my 06 wrx. except the only difference is that I was the dummy that backed into the bmw.

I spent $430 to have it fixed. Others quoted me more. Econo-paint promised to cover it all up for $280 but I've heard bad stories about their overspray.

make a post in a your local forum and see if anybody can recommend a good cheap suby friendly body shop.

Do it right and have a professional perform the fix, I hate touch up paint, it never matches, it applies like a PITA, and looks worse than the scratch.
heyitsmedooby 02-07-2007 01:44 AM

a brand new rear bumper only costs 250...get it painted somewhere.
woadey_2002 02-07-2007 03:02 AM

300 is steep, i had the same problem but on both sides of my bumper and got it fixed for about 200.
turbokonejo 02-07-2007 04:01 AM

BIG POSTs MAKE YOU READ, SORRY
Wow most of you guys have no idea what your talking about. Sure you can buff and touch that up but like some have said its not going to be perfect, then again what touch up job is? Just buy the touch up from your dealer and find your self a thinner brush and all you got to do is make sure its clean and have some sort of heat around. Stay inside the spots were there is no paint, How hard is that? Now $300 is allot of money to fix that IMO. It can be done threw the company I work for, for no more than $99 and with much better quality paint/clear compared to the notorious OEM subie crap. If You want to do the prep work your self and save a little $ before you send it to a body shop then here you go, step out and buy a few sheets of 220 some 400 and 600. I'm sure you have a friend with some putty and primer laying around, Smooth out those scrapes with your 220 and a sanding block then repeat that with your 400 and make sure its all feather edge. Make a little bit of putty because it looks like you only need a bit on that bottom part. Skim some putty on there and with your heat wait for it to dry, once thats done then grab your block again and hit it till its almost transparent with your 220 then just scuff it with that 400 till real smooth and strait to the touch and thats about it, tape off that section with some paper and with your heat again start spraying your rattle can primer, then scuff it with your 600 and put more primer if you think you need it. I wont go into painting it because most people wont get that far but anyways with the damage all prepped up you can then go back to the body shop and tell them that you only want your rear left corner blended and if they can not do the blend and give you crap about only being able to paint the whole bumper then they are milking you and you need to go to another shop. No need to take off the bumper just tape it off and paper the crap out of it.
For all you other guys reading this, sorry for the BIG ol post, if any of you guys have done the 04/05 grill delete mod then you can def fix some easy ass scrapes like this on a bumper. Hope you all learned something.;)
Wannascooby 02-07-2007 04:29 AM

You could try buying a used bumper off the forums...tons of wrb wrx. If i were you I'd try the touch up paint. People won't notice it from far away when you are driving(at least I don't think they do). See if you can live with it, and if you can't save up some cash for the paint job. WHile you are saving search the classified for wrb bumpers and pick one up if you can find one.
turbokonejo 02-07-2007 06:07 AM

I Cant tell from the pic of the bumper if its supposed to looks like that on the top or if its whacked out of shape? If whacked then oops my bad its going to need to be heated up really good then pushed back up/down side/side till as strait as possible, Dont forget that these ABS parts have memory to what they are originally molded to be and once done if you have any high or low spots you got's to grind or shave them down then skim the whole area with the putty and then go to town with the sanding/blocking. Now this is much more work for some one who dont know what they are doing. I still think the price if whacked would be under $300, I think we do something like $189
jargon 02-07-2007 09:20 AM

Don't use the touch-up paint. Just because they advertise it as a matching color doesn't mean it will match! Trust me, it won't look good at all.
Lexington 02-07-2007 10:26 AM

If you don't have an extra $300... re-evaluate the whole owning a performance vehicle thing..
