No More Understeer, Found the Solution!

It had nothing to do with adding more camber, raising the rear or huge front sway bars!
My WRX is on the chopping block:

And instead, I'm now co-driving a 2006 Sport/Track Pack Elise, and instead, fighting Oversteer. We're thinking about adding more camber, dropping the rear or stiffening the front sway bar.

At least oversteer is a lot more fun! :D
Actually, this Sunday was our first event, and very first time on a track. So we had zero development time. Car owner John Kestler took it upon himself to do the first runs, where we found the car to be wildly oversteering. We had tried to predict what we needed to do to make the car work on a AX course by adding more camber, dropping the front and softening the front sway bar. Driving 2nd, I benefitted from his between run changes to air pressure and dampers.
After our runs, and before Fun Runs, we dropped the car all around, more in the back, which also gave us more neg. camber in the rear, stiffened the front bar a notch (we had softened it too much), and further adjusted the dampers. In Fun Runs we took two seconds off our race runs ... but then everyone is faster in Fun Runs. But at least we could now lean on the car with confidence. Again John ran first and I did an O'blenes and beat my car owner. My team position as the Tire Provider might be opening up if anyone is interested. You get to co-drive a brand new SS Elise ... you just got to let the owner shine! :p

We're finishing off this year in our local CSCC SK1 class, stock cars with street tires, so that John can make sure he wins this class that he was leading with his STI (sold). Next year he will run SS with Hoosiers and I will probably do SK1 with 615's. I'm hoping the light Elise will be easy going on those Hoosiers that I have to feed it! :(

I have to disagree... Your theory on reducing understeer is completely wrong.
My studies have proven the solution to include an '89 Honda Civic Si....
I have no idea where you came up with this whole Elise thingy....

I didn't say it was the ONLY solution, only one of the more expensive, but FUN solutions!
Interestingly enough, we were going through the owners manual after posting our slow times, and discovered that LOTUS does NOT guarantee Wins or even fast times, (for the un-talented)! I guess the GT2/3 owners have also discovered that. :p

Mr. Mako,
On a totally different subject, what part of the car is resting on the stands in that picture? I'd like a safe alternative stand location, so I don't have to use the OEM jacking points all the time.

Frame rails ... with bits of wood between stands and rails
| littlewhitewagon | 10-19-2006 05:30 PM |
What does a Tire Provider do?? Does this mean you are looking for someone to pay for all the tires?? Do you have a position to wash the cars in a speedo? I'm somewhat interested in that...no really though, what is a Tire Provider?
| BlkWRXWag | 10-19-2006 05:44 PM |
A tire provider buys all the race tires in exchange for codriving the car.

you've never bought and built a nationally competitive autocross car then. sure, the tires get pricey, but nothing compared to buying a car and then spending the time and money to make it fast.

I know it takes money to build the car. I am not comparing the price of tires to the build cost. But for your average novice recreational autox driver, it is expensive for me to pay for a couple grand in tires to drive a fast car that i will not be able to take advantage of. I WANT to participate and help, but my pockets aren't that deep.

I also bought an extra set of (used Elise) wheels ... which he will buy off of me. And I bought a set of 615 street tires, so that we can run the rest of the season in a street tire class ... that the owner is winning ... in the STI that he sold. But I also have to watch his wife occasionally take her girlfriend to Starbucks in the Elise. We've got to keep her happy since she co-signed the papers. :-(
Next year while he's running SS locally, I'll probably run in our SK1, local street tire version on the stock car classes, indexed, that normally run R tires. That way we won't be competing directly against each other locally. And, I'll save some money on tires. I'll run SS in National events with him, on R's.
