NRG Steering Wheel Setup - Quick Install Guide
We have installed an NRG steering wheel setup on our project car. Here's our review. Please visit www.projectwrx.org click on Reviews and select NRG Steering...

and before someone else accuse us of being biased because of any affiliation - NO, we are not sponsored by NRG :o

( wish we are tho :D )

Nice write-up on the install... although I NEVER like cutting airbag wires... just a personal preference... ie. if I ever go back to stock and get in an accident and the bag doesn't blow... they see the hack job and all bets are off.
GotWRX03 06-28-2006 04:28 PM

thanks!

yeah. i was really hesitant to cut it - but I had to do it. There was no other way, unfortunately.

If you follow Airbag wire down to steering column, you will find quick disconnect plug. :) so you DONT HAVE TO cut it hommie.
GotWRX03 10-04-2006 02:19 PM

this would've been a great info to know BEFORE the cutter clipped the wires :D

thanks yo - i'll add it to the tutorial I wrote!

yeah, no need to cut. we've sold so many nrg setups, most all for daily driver/track cars. and everyone loves them! i just switched out my momo wheel, for an nrg suede and the new 2.5 qr.

Is there anyway i can keep my cruise control?
t3hWIT 10-05-2006 01:48 AM

So... to mount the steering wheel. Did you have to use both the quick release($85) AND the hub adaptor($130)? www.rbaftermarket.com was a bit vague on that, so hopefully you can clear that up. :)
Counterfit 10-05-2006 02:55 AM

That's a great way to prevent your car from being stolen. Take the steering wheel with you. :D

Bump. I had someone ask me this same question earlier.

i managed to get mine off no cutting needed
GotWRX03 10-13-2006 09:50 AM

i'm sure with some inginuity, you should be able to. i didn't bother with mine since we removed the cruise control anyway :)

3rd time.....
GotWRX03 10-13-2006 10:12 AM

you DON'T have to get the quick release if you don't want to conveniently detach the steering wheel. you only have to, if you want to be able to remove the steering wheel quick and easy - worth it.

WgnWheel 10-13-2006 05:57 PM

^Right. if you just want to replace the wheel, all you need is a hub adapter(nrg does not have a suby one, yet) and a wheel. If you want to remove the wheel, you need hub+qr+wheel.

Somehow I missed those replies. Thanks for the info, and its still a cheap/unique anti theft mod. Almost as cheap as the toggle switch on the wire going to the starter. ;)

Could you take a picture from outside the car? I'm just trying to get an idea of how close to the driver the steering wheel will sit on the column.

i actually just put in an NRG wheel with release.. The reason that you need to remove the factory clockspring is because of the distance from the column to you chest.

I can take pics tomorrow but the wheel is PERFECT distance away from me in the car.. Probably one of the best mods ive ever done.. I feel like i have more control over the car
t3hWIT 10-19-2006 09:03 AM

Thanks dude. So you removed the spring to keep it from stocking out far... so does that mean you have to turn off the turn signals yourself or do you still somehow have autocanceling?
WRXDriftR 10-19-2006 10:24 AM

just unclip the steering wheel and use a bicycle lock to strap it to a frame member in the trunk :D good anti-theft device

nooo.. when you remove the clockspring, the auto turn off coupler can be popped out. You then have to electrical tape it to the NRG shorty hub. It sounds ghetto but it works perfect.
If you look at the op's install instructions it is explained rather well.
Ive seen a lot of aftermarket wheels that stick out way to far into the person chest, but since I removed the clockspring, its perfect distance.

I am actualy in the works of making a mount for the cruise control lever and re-wiring it for daily use..

visit www.ProjectWRX.org and go to the reviews section. I have a detailed "how to" instructions -- :)

thanks, i see that! nrg said they didn't have one that would fit:furious:

What does the factory clock spring do besides turning off the blinkers automaticly? im kinda confused and i want a steering wheel. so its ok to remove it?

Ok. I thought you guys were talking about two different routes of installation.

the factory clockspring holds all the wiring for the airbag and the cruise control/horn. Its actualy a large spindle of wire able to turm with the wheel.

By taking out the clockspring, you lose horn, cruise control and airbag.

Horn can be solved easy with the new wheel's horn/psuh button switch to ground.

Airbag, you're screwed.

Cruise control, im actually working on mounting it into the column and tapping all the wires so that itll still work. its actually really easy

Anyone using NRG-F009 wheel? I want go get one of those. How nice is it? Any weird issues with the way it is offset. I think I will benefit from it. i am 6.3 and 240lb. tall dude.

*link didnt work*
ProdriveRex 11-02-2006 10:31 AM

Where do you get the suede wrapped wheel? I cant find it anywhere.
GotWRX03 11-02-2006 05:39 PM

not me. it looks nice though :)
WgnWheel 11-02-2006 10:57 PM

that 009 is a nice wheel, you'd be surprised at the quality of their wheels, for the price. we have a few customers with the 009, for the same reason you mention.
