painting break calipers

well i bought the paint and just wanted to know if anyone has tips to make it go smooth. Sand? wipe clean?
| PARANOID56 | 04-03-2006 01:41 PM |
clean the brakes very well. then paint. and its brakes not breaks :D
| adam_m_mcinerney | 04-03-2006 02:38 PM |
Yeah I did this just a little while ago. If you have the brush on kind make sure you sand really well. Then use the caliper cleaner. Let that dry, then start applying the paint. Prep work goes a long way. If you have the duplicolor kind wait about ten to fifteen minutes between coats. Three coats should do you just fine.

I also used a high temp clear when I was done. like 4 coats. Looks good :D

A good tip, is don't use a brush, use one of those foam things on a stick. Application is much easier.

Do the brush type kits work well? I looked at the silver kit one day, and debated about it, but it seems when I paint stuff with a brush... I streak it, not a very smooth coat. I'd rather paint the calipers still on my car and the spray can would be tough to do. Alot of taping!
Thanks,
JW

The high temp paint is thick enough that the "brush strokes" normally smooth themselves out pretty well. Don't skimp on your coats, but don't glob tons of it on there either, and you should notice that they kind of flatten out. I would recommend buying another brush or two. The bristles start falling out after a while and it really will irritate you.

I bought a spray can. It the brush beter?
| MarylandEcstasy | 04-04-2006 01:56 PM |
I like the brush better... spray is messy. You can get every lil nook and cranny
| CLR4ILS | 04-04-2006 07:13 PM |
brush is a lot easier

I did the ones on my tiburon with the auto zone red kit, and the paint evens out really well. I think the brush is just easier because you don't have to remove the caliper or block off the rotor and everything in your wheel well, I also put the front of the car up and took off both front wheels then would add a coat then switch to the other side and by the time you're done with that side the other is ready for it's coat. Then did the same with the rear, works really fast!! Good luck.

Yeah I did the same as above, and it probably took about three or so hours to get it pretty much perfect, and that was with me farting around half the time.

Your best bet for paint is high temp....500 or 1200 degree from a spray can. Get a small container or sumthin to spray it into and brush it on. It will take many coats to give it the powder coated look ( smooth ) This seems to be the best way I have found, the brush on paint doesnt seem to penatrate as well as the spray can when applyed with a brush. Also like said above prep is KEY I cleaned my calipers with break cleaner then scrubed with small wire brush and carb cleaner. Just B4 painting I heated the calipers up with a small torch ( hot to the touch 150+ ) to get any remaining oil-break fluid ect... off. Dont forget primeris the glue that paint sticks too (high temp for breaks).....good luck

I used the hi-temp rustoleum BBQ black and put it on with a foam brush. For prep I cleaned them up with steel wool. After a year it seems to be holding up fine. I didn't want shiny rotors anyways, just wanted it to look better than rust.

I got the high temp enamel in a can. But it seems like the bruch is the way to go? I figured spraying it on would be better?
| calmnothing | 04-07-2006 11:27 AM |
I did mine with a can. It turned out great. I cleaned it and sanded down a lil bit first.

How many calipers can a kit paint? I am thinking about getting some, but it would be cheapier to share the cost with someone else.
| adam_m_mcinerney | 04-07-2006 03:16 PM |
Rexin, the cost is pretty low to begin with, (15 bucks for the duplicolor kit). You could easily get two cars out of one can, your problem will be the paint life in the can is only like 5 or six hours once you open it. So if you do want to share the wealth make sure you and who ever you do it with prep all the calipers before you start. If you don't you might be cutting it close. You may also need to buy one extra can of caliper cleaner. Although if you sand and then use the cleaner you might be able to just eek by. But I would recommend the second can for two cars. Also buy an extra paintbrush or two.

Yeah, I know its cheap, just don't want to be wasteful if there is left over paint...

The high temp paint works well, use a wire brush to clean them up. Now use a electroclean to get all the oils off of the caliper. Yes, I removed the calipers and set them on top of the rotors. I used a trash bag to mask off the area. Good luck.

I did mine this weekend. I used the duplicolor kit, sprayed the calipers with the cleaner, and wiped down with paper towels until no more dust would come off, masked everything and went to town with the foam stick. Took me about 4 hours, but they came out awesome.

I'd suggest getting the one from tirerack.com. They would probably ship to Canada and save you a bundle, not to mention, the clear coat wouldn't be necessary with the application. :)
| veightkiller | 04-12-2006 10:59 PM |
i use the steel brush, the one that you can put on a drill and it will be more faster that way
