Paulie is god, click to find out why.

Well....

Paulie mate....you are the best.
I cannot EVEN come up with any other word that would do you justice.

Your MOMO insert arrived today. (GF had the day off, called her from work and she was like.."You got a little package, I think it is your insert for your car")
And I was like.... WOW!!!! HOLY ***** ALREADY!?!?!?!?!?!?!
(Note I paypal'ed him on Saturday, and as soon as he got the cash he RAN out on his weekend and mailed it for me)
Needless to say I couldn't wait to get home.

So I did, the package was shipped professional, and with gentle tender loving care. AWESOME.
Instructions were SPOT ON, WAYYYYY TOO EASY, and when I opened up the bubble wrapped package inside, I was greeted to the insert dropping right into my lap. :) But oh no!!! I thought I just lost the o-rings somewhere in the grass!!!! No I didn't. ;)

Paulie thought of THAT too!!!! He tapped them BOTH to the inside of the bubble wrap packaging. WOW.

The knob feels like it was OEM, and my boot doesn't sag ANYMORE!!!! YEAH!!!! AWESOME look, feel, etc.

A consumate professional. From all the updates, to the emails, to the PM's. To the product turn around and delivery, to the packaging and instructions....this man is TOP F - ING notch.

And NO, I have never met Paulie, nor do I know him personally.
(Although I'd love too)

Mate, you are truley a man with great integrity and craftsmanship.

I applaud you.

Anyone who bought theirs already, it's probably in your mailbox by now, or will be there in time for the 4th. (and boys and girls your in for a treat)

Anyone who hasn't got one yet. Wait on his list. Even if it takes a month for you to get one.

This is one special product, and guy.

A pleasure to do business with.

Cheers mates,

And best of luck to Paulie in EVERYTHING you do. You deserve it.

I assume this is to mount a Momo knob into a WRX due to some sort of thread mismatch?
willguidry 07-01-2002 05:11 PM

Momo knob from set screw to threaded. Yes.

Momo thought it would be better to make these and many of their knobs set screw types. With NO one that makes threaded inserts.

And it works PERFECTLY with the RS too.

Pics, dammit, post pics! :D :D
willguidry 07-01-2002 08:20 PM

Darwin, It's already installed...

Just imagine a Momo airleather shift knob tight, not wiggly, and actually connects to your leather boot.

It's plain awesome.

Yeah, guess I worded it wrong eh mate?

HOWEVER, I was in fact very excited when I posted. I was hoping I'd be the first to give props

Uhh, Will...

Uhh, hmm...

I'm speachless...really.

Thank you so much for the kind words my friend. That really means a lot to me. I am so happy you liked your adaper. I knew you would :)

If you need anything else, anything at all, please don't hesitate to e-mail me.

I just got back from an 8 hour round trip to Cobb Tuning, so I'm exhausted. Sorry for my "short" thank you post. But seriously, THANK YOU!!!

Just want to add a counterpoint to the enthusiasm. The piece is definitely well made and does exactly what it's represented to do.

The problem with the piece as I see it is that the threads don't run all the way through it. They should. Without them, there's no way to mount the Momo knob as low as it can go. Sure, it may sit as low as the stock knob, but I want it as low as possible. The adapter instructions say, "To make it lower, screw it down farther." The problem with doing this is that the set screws in the Momo knob end up tearing up the adapter because of the torque necessary to screw the adapter into new territory (where there aren't any threads). And don't mistakenly assume doing this will be easy. It'll take significant effort. I wasn't able to accomplish it.

Using the Momo-supplied inserts allow the knob to sit all the way down on the shaft. If you lose the inserts (as I did) you can simply wrap the top of the shaft where the threads are with electrical tape until you build it up to the inside diameter of the Momo knob. I'm not talking about a wad of tape. You're simply layering the tape onto itself just like it was on the roll when you bought it. It works perfectly. Now, how about keeping the boot up and tight? See below...

Go to Home Depot or Lowe's or similar store and head over to the electrical section. You're looking for some rubber grommets used to protect wires from sharp edges when you pass them through a piece of metal - like a firewall. You'll need a smaller one with a hole in the middle that will fit tightly over the shift lever shaft. You'll also need a larger one that approximates the size of the plastic ring found on the bottom of the stock shift knob - just big enough so it won't pass through the hole in the top of the boot. If you can find it, a larger grommet with a small hole is actually all you need. I looked for one but didn't find it. You may have more luck. Instructions are: remove shift knob and console piece with shift boot attached; slip small grommet onto shift lever (it should fit tightly); slip larger grommet onto shift lever (small grommet holds it up); replace console with boot; replace knob; feel through the boot and slide the grommets up until they pull the boot up against the bottom of the knob.

This solution allows you to easily slide the boot down away from the knob so you can spin the trim ring off and remove the knob. Total cost is about $3 and it works beautifully. Simple is always best.

Scott,

I am glad you are happy with the adapter. I do have a simple solution using the adapter to make it do exactly what you want, and it'll only take like 2 minutes.

First to clarify, the reason why the threads don't go all the way through the adapter is to make it act like a nylon locknut so it will not loosen up.

With that said however, there are two other ways to make the knob sit lower...

Using a hacksaw blade which costs like 99 cents, all you have to do is cut off the top portion of the adapter (the portion where it doesn't have any threads). What's left will have threads running all the way through it, so you can screw it down all the way until the adapter it bottoms out on the shift shaft which is what you wanted. The boot attachment will still be in tact, and everthing will still be fine. No removing console pieces or anything like that needed.

In addition, you can go further and cut off the boot atachment on the bottom of the adapter, making the end of the adapter flush with the bottom of the Momo knob. This will let the Momo knob bottom out on the shift shaft, which is the absolute lowest setting. As for attaching the boot, it's simple. Do not thread the Momo cap on when installing, leave the set screws exposed. Just screw the knob down until it bottoms out completely on the shift shaft, and then work the shift boot over the threads on the Momo knob until it's flush with the top, covering up the threads and set screws that are normally hidden by the Momo cap. Walla! That is the absolute lowest setting, because the Momo knob itself is bottomed out on the shift shaft.

So with 1 cut (top of the adapter) you can make it just like you wanted, and with 2 cuts (top of the adapter, plus boot attachment) you can bottom it out completely.

Like you said, sometimes simple is ia always best :)

Looks very good.
disaster999 01-03-2005 11:30 AM

how much is the insert? i just got a momo airleather knob and used the setscrews to hold it in place, its seems to work out fine right now, but not sure how everything would hold up since my friend told me it would fall right out of your hand and scratch up the shaft
AlbanianImpreza 01-03-2005 11:33 AM

oh ok pics?
disaster999 01-03-2005 11:38 AM

pics of the insert? or pics of knob falling out and scratch marks on the shaft?
Trip McNealy 01-03-2005 12:28 PM

i have paulie's adapter as well, modified it to sit lower.. great quality and fits the MOMO knob perfect.
Subahaulic 01-03-2005 05:14 PM

This thread/topic is ancient history and Paulie no longer makes adapters.
disaster999 01-03-2005 06:24 PM

oh..ic, then what else could i do to make the boot stay up? i was thinking of taking off the ring at the bottom of the knob and shove the boot in the threaded part, not sure if that would work
WRXakaBooSTi 01-03-2005 09:29 PM

dude to get the boot to stay up you can simply use a rubber dome shaped washer found in the plumbing section at most hardware stores (ace is where i got mine) i dont get why everyone is so stressed about the falling boots, its so easy to fix with a 20cent piece from the hardware store.
wrxsubaruwrx 01-03-2005 09:45 PM

I used the same $.99 hacksaw blade and cut half of the threads off the shiftlever itself . I just threaded a threader nut on first , sawed off half of the stock then unscrewed the threader ( die i believe its called) looks like it was never touched (just lower :p ) .
Dick Fitzwell 01-04-2005 03:07 AM

try shooting paulie a pm anyway. he might have one left laying around.
Subahaulic 01-05-2005 06:35 AM

Paulie told me he's re-tooling a better design--look for this right after the Accesstuner hits the market! :D
Paulie told me he's re-tooling a better design--look for this right after the Accesstuner hits the market! :D
I know, I know - I've been waiting for the AccessPROTUNER for over a year. I even have an e-mail from Cobb dated Sep '03 saying it would be out in a few months!

As for the adapter, the new design has been completed for some time now. I had the prototype made up and have been using it ever since.

I redesigned it to add some important features I thought would be benificial.

The new design:

1) is height adjustable (and can bottom out as low as it can go if so desired)
2) is based on a locking collar design vs the "nylock" effect
3) is made from metal
4) can be used with or without the boot holder
5) can be used with other universal knobs like Sparco, etc (not just Momo)

The problem is that my manufacturer wants more $$$ to produce it, even though the materials cost way less! I designed it to add the above features, and to lower the price by 50%.

I've been having trouble shopping around for different manufacturers to produce it. Most of them don't even get back to me unless I want to order over a thousand parts!

Believe me, if I could find a way to make it happen faster, I would. I even had a prospective deal with one of the vendors on this site to sell them exclusively, but they can't sell something that isn't made yet, ya know?

I wouldn't count anything out yet, but I wouldn't expect them next week either...

:)

Ask Dick Fitzwell - he knows how determined I am with my projects, he he he

Bump and subscribe. This is so what I need.
djhack169 11-05-2005 08:47 PM

yep, what Len said.
antny 11-06-2005 01:45 AM

Last time I talked to paulie about this he said he was contemplating mass production but I say HIGHLY doubtful. best thing is to PM him and see if he is going to. And I almost got his last adapter version 2 but I didnt need it. he might not be on the comp for awhile since he has some business to attend too for a few weeks so shoot him a pm just in case he does get on.
Paulie 11-07-2005 11:45 PM

Hey guys,

Yes, I'm still here, but as Antny said, I'm attending to some business at the moment, and I'm checking my e-mail and such from a remote connection...

As for the adapters, I've yet to find a manufacturer that can meet my price point for the volume of product I wish to produce...that is the only reason the new version fo the adapter hasn't surfaced yet...

:)
