Expect a similiarly sized upload tomorrow from below treeline as well. Maybe more, maybe less, depends on if I find a spot that makes the slow in the turns cars look fast or not...

Monster's car looks pretty much in Race to the Sky's form (ie rideheight)
It doesnt appear that Tourag that Sullivan is driving is anything spectacular. Am I right?
How are those Pro Trucks handling the course?
I'll be there tomorrow!

The Touaregs are all stock, all 5,800 pounds.
They are slow, but cheer for them and pimp those biotches out on the web. VW is observing this effort with eyes to a much more funded and built attempt in 2007, but I didn't say that....
Sullivan put it on the slope playing around tryign to pitch it sideways going down hill (only way it would go fast enough?). He pitched it once, gathered it up, tried to do it again, and it wouldn't rotate. Virtually no damage to the car (the crew reports a dented heat shield).
The ProStock trucks are underwhelming. The drivers are pushing for the main part but the cars are just out of their element. The fastest protruck is over a 1:11 behind Leonard's times.
Monster's car is pure sex...

Where is Monster staying? I'd like to get a up close look at the car.

I don't know. I try not to stock the drivers....
But seriously, I don't know. A lot of them are at the Sheraton. I'd guess he is somewhere in Manitou...

Pic95 is my buddies semi truck (Series 60 engine)!!! Go Joe!!!
This is his first year with the truck. They told me that this is the first truck running twin turbos at Pikes Peak. Smaller turbo coming out the corner and the larger one for top end. Once I get my CDL I hope I can drive it. He really wants to beat Mike Ryan's truck (Mercedes engine). I hope they can just finish the race. Good luck Joe!!!
I have two friends that actually tuned Mike Ryans truck. One of them is my boss the other is my co-worker.

The drivers that stay at our hotel every year stay up into the wee hours drinking beers in the parking lot with us. It's hard to believe they are up only a few hours later on the hill.

Tajima was on pace to break the record until:

Looks mostly cosmetic but they will find out when they get it back to the pits.
Time on the top was 5:15
Time on first run on the bottom was 4:38
Second run he did 127 mph at the Picnic Grounds before he went off near Glen Cove.
Donner fastest in Open Wheel.

Anybody get any cockpit shots of the Suzuki? I'm trying to figure out if it has a steering angle sensor (?) for the steering column. There's a tiny little belt driven off of the steering column.
Also, Subaru windshield wiper fluid bottle, oxygen bottle on driver's right?
Plus, two yellow posts on driver's left side...for the battery?

I didn't get any cockpit shots. I had a hard time getting close to the car except when it was upside down. I am trying to get hold of the Suzuki guys for an article I am writing. I'll ask them.
Now that I have got all the photos I needed of to the mags I had a chance to upload my race day shots. In the next couple of days I am going to organize them better and edit a few out. Photos are here under Pikes Peak:

Here are a couple of samples. The ones on the web site have a less annoying copyright notice.
The photos are in order as the weather changed.

There was some. It was just covered with massive amounts of dust...
PS 2002 and 2003 had virtually no snow as well, 2004 had snow twice durring race week, then this year we had flurries on wednesday, thursday, and saturday, just no accumulations.

I'm talking about the wall of snow that usually has grafitti carved into it right at the corner at Devil's Playground. There's got to be a photographic history of this one corner going back over the last century, taken on nearly the same day...at the same time of day. Global warming evidence.

I know exactly what you're talking about. And in my 5 years I can think of two previous to this one that didn't have it at all, where as I can also think of one year where there was TONS of snow and ice on the side of the mountain at Devils...

Okay. It just seemed a little dry this year. I guess it is kind of funny that we've both gone to the same spot for the same amount of years and are both Subaru nuts...yet see the same thing differently and remain strangers. :D
Well, at least the Rocky Mountains aren't falling apart like the Alps.
"Scientists now believe global warming is melting the Alps. The ice that for thousands of years had filled the deep cracks at the summit of the Dru has started to melt. The glue holding this rock tower together is leaking away."
The race would really suck if parts of the mountain cracked off and fell. Unless you got it on film.
P.S. I'm the guy that threw the styrofoam airplane a few years ago that went all the way out of sight around the mountain. :D

You threw Styrofoam into the forest? Litterer! Actually, who am I to talk...I have left lots of plastic pieces (and a few bits of glass) in the forest in the last two years! :)
I have a question for you guys...how far up is that road paved? I have seen lots of different photos from various sections that show trees with dirt road...then I came across this photo:
http://autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Site=CW&Date=20060703&Category=PHOTOS03&ArtNo=703001&Ref=PH&Params=Itemnr=13
That tarmac that is pretty high up (above tree line), I think! So, if you could supply some more detail, I would appreciate it. I am considering running that event next year for fun, so any info about the road would be appreciated.

Ken,
The road is paved in a number of sections.
The first is from the start line to the exit of the left hander at the end of the picnic ground straight. (the fastest portion where you read about mph)
Then again there is some old asphault we run on the Glen Cove straight. It doesn't really come in a complete paving until you are about half way through it.
Next is the 'new' section about 75' past the down hill brake check shack at the Cove. This is where the older (above) paving ended until this year with a rather fast RH flick following the rock wall. This is all paved now. This continues past Cove Creek (the indent in the mountain above the Cove) past Elk Park (the former best place to camp, jerks) and into the first switchback you see, then into what's called Ragged Edge (now like the EP switchback with gard rail) and onward into the first leg of Double Cut (a common L/R section with the boulder outcropping where a lot of pics are takn and finally it ends at "corner exit" of that right hander.
It appears that the state may plan to do more of the road above this section next. This is the "W's" section and judging by the stakes on the road side they might have it paved to Devils Playground next year. Who knows, it's really anones guess as to how far they can get given time, tourists and weather.
**50 years from now some tree hugger is going to want all of this taken out as being damaging to the enviroment due to the leaching of wather through the asphault....just wait and see. LOL

KB,
My understanding is that the pavement this year is up to the hairpins below Devil's Playground. You know, the two corner combination including the left hand hairpin where Ramana almost went off (I assume Alex pointed this out) and the right hand hairpin in front of the large rock formation. I think this is called "Double Cut" by those in the know.
I think that section of corners is about a mile above Glen Cove and a mile below Devil's Playground I guess.

There was approx 1.8 miles graded and staked (I'll see if I still have the trace stored in my GPS) just like there was last year that is now paved.
The record will fall as soon as the organizers give the unlimited and open wheel guys a clean fast road to run on...
Some one contact Moberly, he has contacts high up in the BoD and can tell you how fun the Ws were in the snot on his run (I pressume KB and bjorn would know whom I am talking about and how to contact him/pm me if not)...

That is not entirely correct. Yes it seems that it's not the same circumstances and in fact surface wise it's not. However the lower portion of the road is now the same or in some ways slower than it was five years ago. Huh? No way. Yes; way.
The road from the start line to the picnic grounds is now paved. But there is some serious loss of road width. This due to both the loss of apex ditches we used to run in as well as the hay bails placed at corner exit (and some at apex to keep down the rock throwing) that were not there previously.
Everyone said once the road was paved here we'd be sooo much faster. In many cases this is not the case. (me personally yes, but not due to the road but more the refinement of the car to match the former record holders 600+ hp- but that's another story) Check your qualifying times from classes now to those of years ago and you'll see the times are not faster for most.
We've gained grip but lost 20% or more of the road.

It is still not the same race, even if the course is now slower.
As more pavement appears, I am sure the drivers will adapt their style and car set up and then the grip will more than make up for the narrower road.

KB & CE,
This youtube video from a promotional deal from SRT-Dodge shows some of the new pavement. You can see the new stuff up top and where it ends in the Picnic Grounds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlHOGKzGKrA
During the race day, an interesting observation by one of the commentators metioned that since the upper section is actually permafrost tundra, putting hot asphalt on it will make the suface crack and fall off like hot fudge on ice cream. I never thought about that, but it makes sense, given the loose base traffic volume and constant freeze-thaw cycles.
It's just a shame they are paving it. Any of you locals know what this year's section is?

During the race day, an interesting observation by one of the commentators metioned that since the upper section is actually permafrost tundra, putting hot asphalt on it will make the suface crack and fall off like hot fudge on ice cream. I never thought about that, but it makes sense, given the loose base traffic volume and constant freeze-thaw cycles.
It's just a shame they are paving it. Any of you locals know what this year's section is?
It is still not the same race, even if the course is now slower.
As more pavement appears, I am sure the drivers will adapt their style and car set up and then the grip will more than make up for the narrower road.
Morgan,
In theory I agree with you but the thing is this. Drivers used to make a set up to optimize for the dirt and not suffer on the pavement. With the way the road is changing it is a lot harder to find a set up that doesn't have too many compromises. Right now there is enough pavement that merely not suffering is no longer acceptable for optimal speed. You have to find a set up that is good on pavement and on dirt, not one or the other (and with the way the organizers are going and the weather is behaving you have to be ready to run on a road surface the consistency of lard on a skillet). Until they pave enough of the road to make a tarmac set up the dominant surface and therfore the dominant set up the drivers will be giving up as much as they gain. If the highway cuts back on the MgCl2 it will make things really interesting.
It is ironic that as the event fades it perhaps becomes even more of a technical challenge and therefore a better proving ground for the development of various technologies. Tires are perhaps a harder choice and even more impotant than they ever were...

Regardless, my point is that since the conditions have changed drastically, you can't directly compare the times anymore.
Can you say with any certainty that the extra tarmac was or was not a factor in Tajima-san's times?

Looked like the tarmac slowed him down. He was unreal on the dirt. Car looked like it handled much better then Millen's Toyota's.
I have not met one driver on the mountain that said the paved sections were faster then dirt. Donner told me a few years ago that he loses 2-3 seconds a mile because he can't cut the corners anymore.

Until this paving really takes hold in the upper most sections where rollling speed is very constant the changes in time will be offset in part by this lack of cutting. Yes the new section this year did aide a few people I suspect but nowhere near what you'd see from Devils Playground to the summit.

It's moot anyway, the record has not been broken

You are not wrong here but the same could be said of Millens run. The road was heavily covered in Penzsuppress and calcium chloride from what I have learned. It was reported (and photographed) as a near paved surface yet 'dirt' in the true sense. That made it far from what was run before it as well in the days of simple granite.

The road changes all the time. Can't compare anybodies record to anybody else's really...
With that said, he was unreal on dirt, and put more time on the upper section record times than on the lower ones, where there was less pavement (rane the same tires on both sections too, unlike some other teams this past year).
Faster on sections with less pavement = faster in general to me (considering in some sections there was SO much rubber on the road that it was black and this was in the "dirt" sections).
Piles of respect for Rod Millen. But the record will fall, and should have already IMO. Now we can only hope to be so lucky as to have him come back and re set the bench mark...
Tajima will break 10 minutes if he can get a run on a decent road...

Not as drastically as the current conditions
And now they have a whole year to pave even more (assuming they are planning on paving more)

They are. They are paving to the top. About 1.5-2 miles per year at average rate.

I agree that a new record is likely to be set in the near future. Monster, next year? But, I also think that the racers will adapt to the new course. It will be an almost entirely paved course...but still gravel when corners are cut. They might also be able to "corner hook" like rally cars, using the inside edge of the pavement to their advantage.
The early cars that normally have to "sweep" the course should have better times as well. Later cars will have to deal with debris on the track.
In a few short years the newly paved sections will be old and crumbling. If a record is set in the next few years it might stay that way for a decade or more.
I just can't wait to see all the hillclimb cars on slicks. :D

If they pave Devil's Playground I'll have to take some chalk and write somthing on the tarmac. You know, just like the Tour de France. Maybe I'll just pass the chalk out to everybody and see what they can create.
