prodrive front lip spoiler part 1

hitman912 12-11-2003 02:12 AM

prodrive front lip spoiler
ok, so i was looking on yahoo trying to find stuff for my car when i stumbled upon some site that had the prodrive front lip and prodrive rear wing sold seperately. the front spoiler was like $350 and ive been looking for a while to get it without the rear wing. so anyway, like an idiot i forgot the name of the site and forgot how i stumbled upon it but it had a whole bunch of different body kits like tommy k. or whatever and sti and kaminari and c-west and all those. so i was wondering, does anyone know the address to the site???

dave :(
ronaldwrx 12-11-2003 10:33 AM

how long ago were you looking?

you could look in your browsers history .. on explorer its a little clock icon with a green arrow coming out of it
NeoGeo 12-11-2003 10:41 AM

Maybe try google? I would like to know where you found that too cuz 350 for the front lip (assume it's authentic prodrive) is a great deal! :)
hitman912 12-11-2003 02:35 PM

well i looked in my history and found the site!  but the price wasnt 350$, it was 399$ and the rear wing was $649. is $399 still a good price for the real thing? hmmmmmm.

go to www.prodrive-usa.com and read up on their aero kit. They don't sell them seperately unless your is broken. Read the technical data on it and you will see why.

I thought it was just a bunch of BS to make money but they have proven that they only work effectively if you have both.
hitman912 12-11-2003 02:45 PM

so what are they saying if you only buy the front? that the rear will fly up and flip you or what??
thrdeye 12-11-2003 02:47 PM

ehh....not that drastic, but it does upset the balance of the car a bit.

It is better to have only the front than only the rear.

FYI - prodrive UK 300 spoiler REDUCES drag over the stock spoiler.(rear)
Uncle Ben 12-11-2003 04:01 PM

$399 is way pricey for a lip IMO... although it DOES look great.

When I spoke to someone AT prodrive, they told me they were available seperately. Also, as far as I know, there isn't a replica available anywhere so the one for $399 is obviously the real deal.

BTW, as far as techinal data is concerned, what do you think all of those huge lips like the Greddy do to your car??

Brian Broz 12-11-2003 07:11 PM

I bought mine seperately. It was supposed to be $350.00 but they charged me $399.00...and never responded to my emails.
And yes, a NASIOC vendor. Last time I bought from them.
Anyways, the lip is real nice...almist too subtle. But classy (I think)
Cheers,

Brian

Thye are available seperatley, but not from prodrive. I think vivid will sell them seperatley, but the major prodrive vendors (SPI, MASTRO, etc.) won't

And all those other lips just look stupid and add weight.
NeoGeo 12-12-2003 01:05 PM

I think if you have a stock rear wing, it helps a little bit, and you could just order the lip. The prodrive test shows that setup (stock wing, prodrive lip) actually has the least drag resistance, although the rear does have more lift than w/Prodrive wing. But with our car's understeer nature, might not be a bad thing. :)
thrdeye 12-12-2003 01:12 PM

For the lazy folks

The car was set-up weighted to represent an average driver and passenger, with all interior vents closed and the tunnel boundary layer fence installed to give the most informative lift / down-force results.
The installation of the fence tends to give slightly higher drag figures than a flat floor tunnel (Approx. 3%) but much more accurate lift results.

The test results were recorded both as coefficients and actual forces (loads) at a road speed of 100mph (160kmh) Drag horsepower at 100mph is the power required to overcome aerodynamic drag at that speed. It should be remembered that drag increases as the square of speed, i.e. if the speed doubles then four times more power will be required to overcome the aero drag incurred. Lift figures work the same way, 100 lbs.
of lift at 100mph becomes 200 lbs. at 150mph.

Aside from experienced test or race drivers most will not be able to feel a difference in lift of around 10 / 15 lbs. however changes of 20 lbs. will be noticed. The standard WRX has a drag power requirement of 60 bhp at 100 mph, front lift is 59.2 lbs. rear 75 lbs. These are average lift figures for a four-door saloon of conventional shape. (Runs 1 +2) The vehicle was then tested at an angle to the tunnel airflow, 7deg and 15 deg representing typical motorway side winds. At 15 deg front and rear lift doubles the balance remains essentially the same though.

The addition of the low WRX wing has no effect on drag but reduces rear lift by 19.3 lbs. at 100 mph and adds 1.2 lbs. of lift to the front. Adding the new front lower molding reduces the drag power requirement at 100 mph to 57.7 bhp and reduces front lift to 5.6 lbs. but rear lift increases to 51.3 lbs.

The Prodrive rear wing was fitted in place of the WRX low wing (initially set at 3-deg incidence). The drag requirement at 100 mph was 58.7 bhp. Front lift 20.8 lbs. rear 21.8 lbs. This is a very good aerodynamic balance.

The WRX was then lowered by 20mm front and rear to represent a sports suspension. Drag bhp required for 100 mph was reduced to 54.5 lbs. Front lift remained the same and rear lift reduced to 14.3 lbs. It was found that rear lift could be further lowered by adjusting the angle of incidence of the rear wing, the optimum resulted in a drag bhp requirement of 59.4. However, this gave 6.3 lbs. of down-force at the rear with 14.4 lbs. lift at the front (100 mph) With an overall lift figure of 8.2 lbs. this will be an interesting future development.

CONCLUSION:
The effect of the Prodrive aerodynamic kit is to reduce drag bhp at 100 mph by 1.5 bhp at the same time as lowering the overall lift from 80 lbs. to 42 lbs. a reduction of 48%

NOTE:
It is strongly recommended that the front and rear parts be used in conjunction with each other. As can be ascertained from the wind tunnel report fitting the rear wing alone will give rear downforce of 10 lbs. and front lift of 75 lbs. at 100 mph, not asafe condition.

ok, so how will the prodrive lip and the STi carbon fiber rear wing work together??

Here she is...the yellow one in the middle.
Not the best pic, but...
hitman912 12-12-2003 11:31 PM

nice and subtle. :) so anyway, how do you think the lip and an STi cf rear wing would be together? tight? or ugly?
SR-71WRX 12-13-2003 12:06 AM

Not too sure. I'm a fan of the Prodrive lip because of how "subtle" it is. The STi wing is quite the opposite although not as gaudy (sp*) as some of the others.

I think it would look pretty good. Try it! It's your car!
lil WRXer 760 12-13-2003 12:15 AM

does anyone have a pic of the prodrive wing on their car?
thrdeye 12-13-2003 12:32 AM

I am the black one

How did you attach your front lip? Mine has come off a couple of times. i am re painting it and I don't want it to come off again.
SR-71WRX 12-13-2003 12:48 AM

Trdeye-- no front pics?

My car is mbp too. I have the prodrive lights and 18" anthracite P1's.

Anyway... i'd like to see the front of your car.

It's PRODRIVE!!!! It's has to be good or the price wouldn't be that high :D
deft 12-13-2003 02:12 PM

OMG that wing is so tight. I want that spoiler!:D :D
Si2Rex 12-13-2003 02:18 PM

that wing has to grow on you. i didnt like it too much at first but the more I view it the better it looks.
Brian Broz 12-13-2003 07:09 PM

I attached my lip with the 3m (expensive) acrylic plus attachment tape. It has held just great!

Brian
PS-I had my doubts that it would hold.
deft 12-13-2003 11:41 PM

In that pasted email or whatever, it's mentioned that the wing is adjusted. I can't seem to see anything on that wing that could be adjusted. Looks like it will stay put in the same position when you put it on the trunk. Anyone know how it's adjusted(if possible)?
hitman912 12-14-2003 12:11 AM

how much did it cost to get the front lip painted?
hitman912 12-14-2003 10:50 PM

which front lip would be better........prodrive or STi v.2

From what I understand, Prodrive made the adjustments to the wing, in order to optimize it's functionality. It fits in the stock mounting holes, so it would be the same on every WRX. The wing is not adjustable.
