Progress on the GRM RallyCrosser
Here's a link to the Impreza project car. We're putting the cage in this week.

Looks like it's starting to come together. I found the ant thing very funny. I had the same thing happen when I parked my old mustang in a field over summer.
GRMPer 11-18-2005 01:01 PM

It's getting there...although we're not sure exactly where "there" is.

I've got this hankering to spray the entire thing military drab green.
I've got this hankering to spray the entire thing military drab green.
How about John Deere Blitz Black?
GRMPer 11-18-2005 01:10 PM

Nah, we've already got a "rat rod" with our Civic, this was more of a US Army idea. The knobby rally tires are what gave me the idea..it rides like a military jeep on pavement.
vintagemilano 11-18-2005 01:19 PM

It's a fantastic series, love reading every bit of it.
AlbaScoob 11-18-2005 02:27 PM

great

look forward to the cage updates...

you could have had my old air intake thingymabob...it might have fit!

Well thats the ultimate goal with the car? Have you thought about swapping, at the very least an RS motor will provide A LOT of bang for the buck.
Well thats the ultimate goal with the car? Have you thought about swapping, at the very least an RS motor will provide A LOT of bang for the buck.
IIRC the goal is for the car to be a PGT car so that swap would make it illegal for PGT.
GRMPer 11-18-2005 03:00 PM

true, but then again, we'll probably be slow in any class (being rally novices...)
true, but then again, we'll probably be slow in any class (being rally novices...)

Per
Haha, well that might be true. But the ultra-short gearing and the stump pulling torque will help immensly.

Also, what complaints or rather, shortcoming does the car currently have?
GRMPer 11-19-2005 01:34 PM

Honestly, not a good enough driver. Autocross I can do, this is a completely new ballgame. A fun one though. My thinking is to learn, write about the learning process, fix what breaks....etc.

Per
Per, am I reading that right? Looks like you set the fastest time out of everyone on your first run, won your class and then finished 3rd overall. Not bad for a newb!
GRMPer 11-19-2005 07:38 PM

I'll be humble and admit that I had decent conditions for my first run, it degraded quickly from there. Still a lot to learn.

Cage is coming along nicely. The weld-in cage kit has some compromises, but even with a skill installer will probably work out to be a bargain.

is it the lighting or did you paint the cage yellow?

I haven't been able to find anything that really 'specs' out your car, but am I correct in assuming that it is a 1.8L Impreza? I am just curious as I have been scavenging all over looking for a used Impreza 5spd that was relatively cheap and relatively close (not THAT eas of a thing to find, really) to replace the 4EAT Legacy that we currently have (if it goes down).

There is also the replacement of a 25RS... but they are WAY pricey, and I would rather roll an inexpensive car, or drive a relatively inexpensive car so I can push without too much worry.

Keep the updates coming as the intake box was a GREAT idea. :)

Ps. Check your air filter after every event ;)
GRMPer 12-05-2005 01:37 PM

It's a 2.2.

I painted the cage yellow....to match the stripes. Bigggggg mistake. After cleaning off the overspray with carb cleaner (and catching a wicked buzz) I still have a bunch of spots of overspray.

Wow -- a 2.2L! If you ever decide to get the most out of the engine, let us know what you do. The Legacy needs some pep as well! :)

nice work. it seems the car is coming along well, when do you think you guys will be done with the work?
GRMPer 12-06-2005 01:54 PM

Um, when it's upside down on a stage? :-)

I dunno..just having fun right now. the first real installment of work on the car will be in the April issue of GRM>

Pics and results from the latest RallyCross are posted. That's one tough little Impreza.
dowroa 12-12-2005 10:42 AM

Just because I would like to know --- what other cars were you competing against? I ask this for the sake that I have noticed that the 2.2L Subarus are pretty darn good, but driving it faster than a well driven WRX is possible, but a well driven 2.5RS or STi is about impossible.

Thanks, and I am HIGHLY considering picking up a 2.2L 5spd Impreza (Legacy is gasping ;)). Thanks for all the hard work, guys!

GRMPer 12-12-2005 10:55 AM

It's a mix of WRXs, Imprezas, Golfs. With only 14 drivers, the talent pool isn't that deep here in Florida (yet) but we're pretty happy getting that close to Duncker, who is REALLY fast.

Per
GRMPer 12-12-2005 11:00 AM

Also, with how some of these ruts develop, it's not a matter of talent, sometimes it's a lack of fear that help!

and one very yellow cage!

looks like fun. i have run a night rallyx once. were there any other lights on the course? ours was at a speedway and was lit up pretty bright so we didnt even need the headlights.

i am sure the cage helped out with that.

i have often said that the way to win at rallyx is to have total disregard for the vehicle.

dont drive a rally like that though!
PhilC 12-12-2005 11:23 AM

I can remember being told that the autocross "tires are worth 2 seconds" phrase applies in a way to rallycross as well except it's :"Having a car you are willing to roll is worth 4 seconds".
GRMPer 12-12-2005 11:32 AM

Exactly!
Also, with how some of these ruts develop, it's not a matter of talent, sometimes it's a lack of fear that help!

Exactly the reason why I rallycross a $300 Legacy. I had a passenger on one of my runs a couple weeks ago at our last rallycross of the season and crossing a set of ruts the car got a little light feeling when I was sliding sideways through a sweeper. My passenger let out oh **** we're gonna flip. I was laughing the whole way.
GRMPer 12-12-2005 01:17 PM

I can't wait until the next one..It's addicting (the next one, BTW, is February 12th at Homestead...two months from now!)

Before I built my GTI rallycar, I rallycrossed an 2.2l OBS with some success here in CA. Depending on how the course is set up, it's possible to beat a WRX, largely because of the torque and gearing. If the course is just right, you can run the whole thing with a minimum of shifting and save a bunch of time that way. A WRX has virtually no torque when it's off the turbo, so you have to work to keep it in the powerband. A 2.5 has a bigger advantage, because it has the torque, an even better final drive ratio, AND an LSD. ...and then there's the STi, with all of the above and more. Grrr.

Hey, Per, when're you going to update your VW book? It was extremely handy when I was building the GTI, but some of the parts you mentioned aren't available any longer or there're better ones out there. And it'd be nice to have a prep-for-rally(cross) section too. :)
GRMPer 12-14-2005 08:42 AM

I'm actually working on it, but when my current job takes 110% of my time, I'm having a bit of difficulty getting going on stuff like that.

Per
subaruwrx420 12-14-2005 09:00 AM

Sounds like you guys have blast out there. I'm going to try to make the Homestead event to, at least spectate. I don't have the cojones to take my wrx out, plus it's set up for autocross and I do need a running car for my cummute. One of these days I'll come across a $500 subaru and be able to join the fun. I think it will make me a better driver overall to get some dirt driving under my belt.
bjorn240 12-14-2005 10:34 AM

Just read the latest update. Cool stuff. Best of luck getting everything ready for Cherokee Trails. Have you sorted a co-driver?

GRMPer,

I was looking at the "list of things to do" on your web page. Under Event, #5 "Buy the stage notes.", you can cross that off. The stage notes are included with the entry fee.

Unders Car Prep:
10) mudflaps. Status: Need to source and install.
The stock mud flaps fulfill the requirements.

15) Tow Rope: need to source and buy. how long? what kind?
Twenty five feet should do it. Pick one up at Walmart or Autozone.

13) 3 warning triangles: need to get from SafeDrives
Or Walmart

Not on the list, maybe it's already taken care of: Somewhere to hold water. You (and codriver) need to stay super hydrated. Either mountain-bike style holders on the cage, camel-back style things zip tied to the cage, bottles in the helmet net, or something. But think about it in advance. :)

Course, there's more, but those are some easy things. Good work on your list.

Cheers,
Anders

GRMPer 12-14-2005 11:33 AM

No codriver yet.

thanks for the feedback....the car currently has no mudflaps, so I think some sort of generic larger style will be fine.
hoche 12-14-2005 04:47 PM

You can make some out of poly or even just use those cheap truck ones (you know, with a mudflap girl or yosemite sam). Or you can order ones from Susquehanna Motorsports (rallylights.com). They also have a spill kit, which you'll need and I don't see on your list. You might want to put "co-driver's maplight" on the list too.
anders8 12-14-2005 05:15 PM
They also have a spill kit, which you'll need and I don't see on your list.
Spill kits are not required for NASA events. You are correct that if he does some Rally America events he will need one.

Cheers,
Anders
Somewhere to hold water...camel-back style things zip tied to the cage...
If you're using a full-face helmet, you're definitely going to want/need a camel-back. No kind of bottle is going to fit up under the chin-bar, trust me, ;)

A camel-back is great in general because you can fill it with water and ice in the morning day and it will stay cold all day long, even in Maine in July  and you can get a quick drink a lot faster from one of those than from a water bottle. :)

Camelbacks are nice. We had some in the old Scirocco, but found that the hoses either fall on the floor or get tangled with the comm plugs. In the GTI, we just carry around water bottles in the co-driver's pack and then grab new ones every couple of services. Simple, easy, and you can quickly dump 'em into the radiator in a pinch. We both wear Bell M2 Pro full-face helmets. No problems drinking in them.
RRR-K2 12-14-2005 08:59 PM
...but found that the hoses either fall on the floor or get tangled with the comm plugs...
I actually run mine through the shoulder belt opening in the seat and I have a clip that keeps it tethered to the shoulder belt itself.
... We both wear Bell M2 Pro full-face helmets. No problems drinking in them.
Huh... I have a Bell SR-Pro and when I'm wearing it I can't get a bottle up under the chin-piece and tilt it to drink. How do you manage to do it?

Matt Kennedy

hoche 12-15-2005 10:05 PM

Oh, I see. Yeah, that'd work. Hadn't thought of clipping them to the shoulder belt directly. Hm. Maybe I should do that with the CoolSuit lines too.

When the bottle's full, I kinda tug the helmet up and drink with the bottle under the chinpiece. When the bottle's more empty, I tug the helmet down and drink through the eyeport. I don't do this while driving though. :)

thats where al kintigh routed them when i was vrewing for him and JB.

every now and then al would forget he was hooked up when he would need to run up to check in.
GRMPer 12-30-2005 07:45 AM

This week has been pretty productive...straightened out the bent Primitive skidplate (and I have the 3/16" one!), wired the horn to a push button, mounted a toolbox in the trunk and filled it with the warning triangles and tow rope, wired trailer light connectors into the Hellas so that I can remove the light bar for day stages....It's getting there!
